Leah Wilson-Lyons: I went to self defense for femmes with Colleen and had the BEST time. A welcoming gym environment for women that you won’t find at other places. I feel strong and empowered and lucky to have taken the self defense course. Every woman in DC should take this course!! It is so worth every penny. Colleen goes above and beyond to help you outside of class and to get to know you personally. The environment is very supportive and helped with my anxiety going in. Great community at that gym. I will be back!

Kay Tang: Colleen and her team of instruction assistants are amazing. They truly create a great space for females to voice, share, and learn the everyday challenge to their safety. I learned a lot!

Urban Boxing: what do users think?

Anne Richardson: When my 14 yo son said to me “mom, I want to try boxing” I thought: “great! But how on earth do I get into the boxing world not knowing anything , and, it’s it going to be an ok place for a kid?” UB was incredible, they walked him through the into process, treated him like a kid with kindness but also as a serious athlete. They are patient, kind, and approachable. Christian and Josh in particular, are spectacular trainers and really great people. Crane is at the desk and is informed, kind, and a super friendly presence to greet you. My son is certainly challenged, and leaves the place feeling so great about himself every time:like going to church! We love UB and will continue to train there as long as we can!

Megan Eitel: This is the best boxing gym I’ve been to in DC. Coaches take every opportunity to improve individual form and technique while giving the entire class an excellent workout. Every coach provides an intense and unique workout. I especially love the attention to form and technique that are provided in both Josh and Jeremy’s classes. This gym, and all of its coaches have improved my boxing form, technique, strength and stamina.

Bethesda Boxing & Kickboxing Academy: what do users think?

Kim Bohince: Bethesda Boxing is hands-down the best boxing studio for beginners, intermediate and advanced individuals who want to feel mentally and physically powerful. I attend classes three times a week, and always immediately look forward to the next. Ken, the owner, is fantastic and makes a point to know your name and you genuinely feel like part of the Bethesda Boxing family. Base is my favorite trainer, who always pushes you to your max, varies the workouts, is beyond helpful, and wants you to be your best self. You will thank yourself for signing up, I promise you!

Wolf Mina: I love BBKA! I’ve been a long time member and still enjoy it. The team always welcomes you with smiles and happiness. At one point I was exercising while pregnant and Julie was excellent. She always made sure I would not hurt myself. Now I have my baby and they are SUPER ACCOMMODATING! I can workout and bring my little one with me, and everybody is nice to her. Now it’s like a family for her too because she sees them on a regular basis. This Club is great!

Martin Gallardo Garrath: Great BJJ team! People are very nice and skillful. All coaches are very good instructures and approachable. Good place to both, start training and compete!

John Graeber: Excellent training by Estilo Jiu Jitsu. I came with no background and after 4 months I feel like I am really feeling comfortable. The training and instruction is great at all levels and the technique is extremely well taught. I love that the instruction is always followed up by questions that people may have. It makes you feel welcome. The conditioning aspect is great. I always feel like we are being pushed to go hard in sparring and take fewer breaks to build up our personal conditioning. Love coming here and cannot recommend it enough to those who are looking for strong training at all levels.

District Martial Arts | MMA Gym: what do users think?

Andrew Turner: My girlfriend and I attended a free trial class the other day. At first we were both nervous and confused, but this was partly because we showed up late and without signing our waivers yet. When we jumped in we felt a bit out of place, but that changed quickly. I have a small amount of experience but my girlfriend has next to none but we both found the MMA class to be accommodating (especially with the kind and patient instructor). Overall, a wonderful environment with quality equipment, great people, and excellent instruction.

Drew Ehlers: Positive: ProfessionalismThe classes that I attended at District were great! BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai- all professionally coached, and the group of men that I trained with were exceptional. Trainers and Participants all were very helpful in making sure everyone was progressing.

Capital MMA & Elite Fitness | Takoma Park, MD: what do users think?

Hernan Guadalupe: I have been training at Capital MMA & Elite Fitness in Takoma Park for close to 4 years. Above the amazing Jiu Jitsu program they offer is the even more amazing people that belong to Capital. My growth as a Jiu Jitsu practitioner is due more to the overwhelming concern and attention giving by the instructors and other teammates than anything else. There is no ego nor individualism that exists in the academy which facilitates and accelerates your growth in the sport. I have awesome training partners and have built great friendships along the way and that, to me, is the essence of the academy. The great part is that this also extends to their other locations in Alexandria, Loudon, and Fairfax as I have had the chance to train at all. So if you want to learn quality Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu in an ego-free environment and train hard while building awesome relationships, this is the place for you.

Amy Boccardi: My 7 year old son has been training at Capital MMA/Takoma for the past year. Unlike other martial arts schools that seem impersonal and focused on making money, the folks at Capital are truly committed to building relationships with families and helping kids to grow as both young people and athletes. Kids classes are a nice size of 6-10 kids with 2-3 coaches. While active, but not really a "sports" kid, training jiu jitsu provides my son with a good balance of both physical activity and thinking for strategy.

Maya Olic: Amazing first experience!! loved working with Uriel! Highly recommending for all parents in Bethesda area, it will change your kids lives!

Lloyd Irvin's Mixed Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Will O.: 10/10 recommend to anyone and everyone of any age, shape, size. I stepped in for the first time around Nov 2017 and knew it was the place for me to be. The atmosphere of excellence is present whether you go train in the morning or evening; you’ll always see pros and world champions training. It’s a very welcoming place for people who just want to go in and lose weight, the elderly, even people who never threw one punch in their life. Master Donnie, Master Lloyd, Coach Jamal I’ve always been able to reach out and talk with them after classes. I’ve become more overall healthy since coming here, built better habits, I’ve learned self confidence here, the power of positive self affirmation, and much more. Big thanks to this amazing team.

T J: Just do your research before going there. It’s false advertisement all the way around. They don’t even have a locker room, to change in. Just one small 10x10 room w/ 20+ other ppl changing into their fighting attire. They false advertise the price that was online. It won’t be the same once you go in there and talk to them about signing up. They’re never on time mostly late. Honestly that’s why i never came back since the first free class. In Muay Thai class we had to put our bag in the stairwell. Luckily no one stole my belongings. That’s another why I was confuse, when people speak highly about how you train so many pro ufc fighters & etc. and Then you see the gym smdh, it’s like they’re tryna cram so many mix martial arts in that small building. You charge so much for fighters to be in that gym weak a** gym but yet you give nothing in return to your fighters, the people that putting money in there, the payments that keeps that place running. That’s just not good business. Y’all need to do better in managing that company.

Fort Washington United: what do users think?

Dawn Washington: I am the mom of a special needs child. I was very hesitant to put him in martial arts. I’m glad we did, best decision we ever made! Grappling and striking have boosted my sons self esteem. During summer camp, the group went on museum tours. Each week had a educational theme. They learned coding, finance principles and received points for each book they read over the summer. The points could be used for toys and games. Now that school has started, the focus is on homework. I worried the staff wouldn’t be one on one with my son for his studies so I didn’t bother sending his homework. Imagine my surprise when his teacher sent multiplication homework home and my son already knew it! He’d work with staff using Kahn academy. Great place, great staff!!!

Charmicielle Goodine: This establishment does not know how to handle primary children. The punishment for a 5 year old should not be the same for a 12 year old. The point system that the children are on is very subjective. And thinking that a 5 year old should have the same responsibility as a 12 year is ridiculous. It is probably a great establishment for older students but not for younger children.

Pentagon Mixed Martial Arts: what do users think?

Nicholas Hunter: I started at Pentagon MMA when I was only 11 years old in the young warriors program. Ever since I started the instructors there focused on teaching not only martial arts but discipline and respect too. They made sure to push everyone in the class and to make sure they learned not only martial arts but life lessons as well. I am now 18 and still attend classes at pentagon MMA however, now they are the adult classes. The instructors make the classes a lot of fun for everyone while also pushing us to become better. The environment at pentagon MMA is one of the best things about the gym. Everyone is so nice and always willing to help, it’s just one big friend group where everyone has fun.

Celine Ferguson: This gym is amazing! The staff is friendly, professional, and incredible at what they do. They’ve made me feel welcome since day one and really do their best to make sure you understand the technique & train hard. In just a few months I’ve learned so much and still feel physically challenged every time I walk in. I highly recommend pentagon MMA.

Black Belt Martial Arts Center: what do users think?

Kelly Velinsky: In October 2019 I joined the Fitness Kickboxing class right after my 3 year old started taking their Taekwondo class. My son loved going to class and all the instructors were so great with him. BBMAC changed everything for me, both mentally and physically. Every coach puts so much time and effort helping us train and get better. It’s a wonderful community to be apart of. Even through this pandemic they provided excellent training through zoom and since June a very safe outdoor strength and conditioning classes. They have 12x12 ft boxes marked out for each person in the parking lot, practicing social distance at all times, hand sanitizer stations and required masks when leaving your area. They go above and beyond to provide a safe environment. I feel very comfortable going . I highly recommend BBMAC!

Gabriella Johnson: Our family has been a part of the BBMAC community for 2 years now and we LOVE it! My son is in the Tae Kwon doe class and it has amazed me so much to see how much he has grown in confidence and discipline. When the quarantine began, they started zoom classes, it was the only consistent routine my son had, and it helped so much, emotionally, and physically. The outdoor classes for his age group are a great addition and he gets to hang out, at a safe distance, with his peers. I too knew I needed an outlet to decompress from the everyday stressors and just to stay fit and healthy during quarantine, so I began their adult program through zoom classes, and it has seriously helped me overall. With the different time slots, they offer over both adult programs, I am able to get in a daily workout. The instructors are attentive, engaging and good-hearted, I recommend BBMAC to everyone.

CABRERA JIU JITSU ACADEMY: what do users think?

Amanda M: Cabrera is a wonderful, safe and fun Jiu Jitsu academy that my seven year old daughter attends. We, as a family, cannot say enough about the welcoming environment and careful attention given to each student. In this environment, all students and parents are encouraged to look-out for each other, help each other, and to encourage and cheer for each student. We are so happy to be a part of this small welcoming community.

Ryan Ingram: I have trained under Professor Cesar Cabrera for many years now. With my job in Personal protection and my military Background I am very skeptical on Training. When I moved to the DC area I tried a few places and then I met Cesar. His Knowledge, method of teaching, professionalism, and skill set stood out head and shoulders above the others. I have really enjoyed training and sharpening my knowledge from the teachings of Cesar. I feel much more prepared and comfortable at work and in life. I would encourage everybody that is thinking of learning self defense visit Cesar. Your life will improve in many ways.

King Khong MMA: what do users think?

Ben Brennan: You absolutely have to come try a class at King Khong MMA if you are considering joining a gym in the DMV. By reputation and now by my own experience it’s clear why Master Bao is the best Muay Thai instructor in the DC area. I started at 43 years old and I went from being intimidated to obsessed with fighting before my first class was over. There’s not another gym I know of with such a positive vibe, and my friend who is a fighter and trained under him and other coaches says she now refuses to train Muay Thai with anyone else but Master Bao. Get off your butt and try a class, it might very literally change your life!

Robert Arenas: Love training here with Bao Khong. I’ve been here for almost a year now and lost a ton of weight under his guidance and encouragement to lead a healthier lifestyle. He always welcomes visitors and potential new students interested in learning either Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, and even Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Give him a shot he won’t disappoint!

Jamie Morgan: Disappointing from boxing gym perspective. Conditioning was decent. Very little technical training or adjustments were provided, and what was given was poor. If you have any martial arts training, or are looking to learn to fight and defend yourself, I recommend another gym. Not a bad place if you’re more interested in the physical workout.

Fifty/50 Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

D C: Great place to train. Both bjj and striking program is awesome and taught by great instructors. Everyone is super friendly and the school has a very accommodating schedule

Jordyn Short: I used to train at Fifty/50 when I lived in the DC area. The instruction was excellent. It’s one of the best BJJ schools in the area. They do a great job teaching fundamentals so you will have a solid base as you progress. The one thing anyone should know going in is it isn’t a school for people who don’t have “thick skin.” Instructors are genuinely encouraging, but they can also be a bit heavy handed/savage if you do something stupid (e.g. unsafe rolling). Ultimately, I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to go in with an open mind, good attitude, and “no quit” mentality.

Relentless MMA & Fitness: what do users think?

Zack H: Where do I start. Dave Carter at Relentless MMA is hands down ( I know coach keep my hands up ) the best coach I have had in my 20 year sports career; soccer, lacrosse. I was a bit nervous going into the gym, not knowing what to expect. As soon as I walked in the door Dave was kind and welcoming and put my nerves at ease. He spoke with me on what I would like to achieve at Relentless MMA, and we came up with a plan on how to accomplish that. That plan was established after Coach Carter spent time, roughly a couple classes closely evaluating skill level and goals. Coach Carter will get the best out of you, he will push you, both mentally and physically. Great part is Coach Carter keeps it fun and fresh and presents all information and concepts in a practical and applicable manner. P.S. If you like to debate superhero powers and characters this is also the place for you. Coach Carter is currently tutoring me in developing my powers of flight and laser beams from my eyes.

Michael Hardin: I have always hated going to the gym to work out, but training Muay Thai at Relentless has been an wake up experience for me. I have no major intentions of fighting matches, but cutting weight and building some muscle tone ARE my goals. Learning to effectively defend myself form harm is just a big plus. I have been training with Coach Carter for just about 8 months now and I have cut 40lbs and my cardio ability has gone through the roof. Coach Carter makes sweating fun. Coach Carter listens to your goals and he will help guide you there. He will work with what ever level you start from, but it is up to you to want to get better, faster, and stronger. Give a class a try and you will truly enjoy the experience. Relentless is NOT a kickboxing aerobic class. It is most definitely an MMA fighting gym.
