Northeast Taekwondo: what do users think?

Jeff Hale: Excellent instructors! My on has been going to Tae Kwon Do here for maybe 4 years. It's a great community. Very welcoming of new folks.

Shani Dhani: This school is absolutely amazing. In the beginning, honestly, I had my doubts but I'm impressed I must say. They have lived up to the 5 stars plus. I've noticed my kid is much calmer and a bit more focused. Whereas he was once a Very active and off task kid. Amazing and All worth it.

Garner Marshall: I bring all of my children to learn Tae Kwon DO at this location. The instruction is phenomenal. They are very strict, sort of para-military. They instill values into the students. The instructors are very sincere. Great location. Worth every penny.

Julius Alston: While studying and practicing Tae Kwon Do under the tutelage of Master O'Kelly I was able to obtain my Black belt. The training as well as the experience I received has become an integral part of my character. I am would recommend the school to anyone . Through the journey of becoming a black belt I became a more confident in all my affairs. By practicing the 5 tenets of Tae Kwon Do I am able to navigate a more serene life. Thanks !

Anthony Lin: Very good instructors in my opinion! Also, sometimes games of dodge ball needed.

M B Delissaint: Awesome place to learn. They do well in balancing between strict regimenand and patience with young kids.

Zora Thompson: i'm a black belt, and I love it! I go twice a week!

Claudia Escobar: Great teachers and methods. Kids just loose to go and learn new techniques!

Nathaniel Gregg: Sensei, there should be a lot of work scheduled ahead for you. I trained there March 84. I couldn t help but notice the area. Robert Mc duffie was black belt at the time. I was kung - fu please allow my apologies as the community needs remodeling.

DC Aikido Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Akire Adams: For anybody looking to learn self defense and build a foundation in martial arts I think this would be a great place to start but you have to want it and actually put forth the effort and ask questions coming here definitely feels like I'm part of the family and the price per month is affordable so if you want to start and gain some personal confidence I definitely think you should join!

walter lewis: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueAll of the staff are very empowering and professional. I felt welcomed. The instructors are very patient and humble. I would highly recommend DC Aikido to anyone seeking to develop self confidence, patience, and self defense skills.

CST CST: Michael Sensei organized an amazing trip to Japan this year. We were 12 people that spent 8 days wonderful days training and sightseeing with members of our sister dojo in Naha and Okinawa city, in Japan. This was my second trip with DC Aikido, and let me tell you it was legendary! We had the best time ever, We immersed ourselves in the Japanese culture. We had the experience of sleeping in a typical Japanese bed. We enjoyed the most exotic foods, and most importantly, made wonderful friends! Hopefully, the Japanese group will come to visit DC next year. Can't wait to show them around town! Thank you Michael Sensei for organizing this epic trip!
Response: And Hilda, we all can't wait for you to come back to Japan a third time!! Your presence on the trip made it that much MORE special. Thank you for all you do!!

Gideon Culman: Nothing but high praise for DC Aikido! I joined the studio last summer for two reasons: to work up a sweat and to use aikido as a physical prism that casts new light on the conversations I conduct day-in, day-out for work as a life coach. From day 1 it has superseded my expectations in the following ways: Everybody is supportive. Anytime I have been stuck, somebody has been there to show me the way. The instructors are eager and attentive. The sparkle on the sheen of DC Aikido’s bright culture is its students, who patiently and respectfully help bring less advanced students to their next level. Every lesson is enlightening. Each class points to new ways I can better serve my clients. Whether we study balance, flexibility, striking or grabbing, not a single lesson goes by without offering up new insights. These insights translate immediately into more adroit and powerful conversations – and satisfied clients.

Rio's “mhall3D” Art 1: GREAT Dojo! I have been training for about a year at DC Aikido and I love it! The folks there are amazing! Veltri Sensei and his team provide a fun and friendly environment for kids and adults. I have gained so much than just learning Aikido. I have gained confidence, strength, and entire Dojo family that I value as my own family. I have found that in training he continually pushes his students to improve their game, both in examining the group as a whole and pinpointing the exact areas that each individual student needs to improve. The support I have received at the dojo has helped improve not only my Aikido and techniques, but my overall sense of self on the mat...my weaknesses and strengths (physical AND mental) are pointed out to me daily and corrected with patience and understanding. What's more, there has ALWAYS been someone of high rank or experience available to answer any question I might have at any given time. I can't say enough about how grateful I am to have met and trained with such an extraordinary man and group of people. Thank you DC Aikido!!!

Jonathan Lemmond: It has been almost two years since I started going to DC Aikido. I love it. I was nervous to start a martial art, but Sensei Michael Veltri, all of the instructors, and all of the students, make DC Aikido incredibly welcoming. I've befriended a great group of people, somehow now get along better with all of the other people in my life, and have gotten in great shape. Training at DC Aikido is tremendously fun.

Ronald Lloveras: I've been a member since August 2012 and I'm glad I took the time to visit/review/research all martial arts locations that are available in the DC area. I was very impressed by the dojo since I first stepped onto their mat. Everyone I met was friendly and very welcoming. After the two tutorial sessions with Charly, I knew that I was going to be a proud member of this dojo. The black belt instructors are great and the all the rest of the members are great as well. Unlike other places I've visited, I didn't feel intimidated by anyone at this dojo. Everyone wanted to help each other learn the techniques and the philosophy behind them. The dojo is clean and well kept. It is conveniently located across the Woodley Park metro and just a few miles by bike.

Jeannys Flamine NNEMNBENG (Jayjay86): I just came back from a trip to Japan that was organized by Michael Sensei . We spent (12 of us) 10 days in Okinawa during which we had the opportunity to receive teaching from Yamaguchi Sensei( Michael Sensei’s Sensei). It was not only a good opportunity for me to grow as an aikido practitioner but also to discover and deeply understand that the skills learned on the mats could be applied in each and every aspect of my life . The art itself, the people( my fellow classmate and of course our Japanese hosts) , the scenery , all contributed in way. They made this trip, my trip, a memorable experience. I tried my best to describe the emotions that I felt during this trip to Japan, but words won't be enough to convey the true meaning of what I experienced . It has to be lived. I hope you’ll be the next to go . I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed .
Response: AND, we are allll so glad you came Jeannys! Thank you for your dedication, commitment, and teamwork helping to make the trip such a great experience!

Christine Ju: We held our daughter's 7th birthday party at DC Aikido. Noah was wonderful to work with, and the price was very reasonable given what was included. They were very accommodating, and the kids seemed to have a great time. Thank you!

Shah Alom Khokon: Good for kids.

Yong Studios DC: what do users think?

J & C Caminos: Positive: Professionalism, ValueMy son has been going to Yong Studios for almost 5 years and he loves it!!! Master Kim is the best and so is Mr. Surage and the rest of the teaching team. They teach the kids discipline and focus and confidence. I would highly recommend Yong Studios for anyone that wants to learn Taekwondo in a great atmosphere!!!!

Ivan Moore: This is an amazing Taekwondo studio! My two sons and I took classes at Yong Studios over a number of years. The instructors are top notch and break down the difference kicks, punches, blocks, forms, etc. so they are easier to learn and you can develop good technique. They vary the different activities in different classes to keep it interesting. Their emphasis on physical fitness, stretching and mental focus helps their students. I love how they incorporate some kickboxing elements in their instruction, which results in even better self defense techniques. The instructors command respect, but have developed a real family friendly atmosphere. I have moved away from the DC area and Yong Studios is one of the things I miss the most! Tip: You really need to commit to coming to class at least 2-3 times per week to see the best results.

Jim LoScalzo: My kids have gone to Yong Studios for more than ten years—I can’t recommend them enough. Founder Master Kim and teacher Master Surage offer fun, empowering, no-nonsense training for a variety of ages. One aspect I find especially appealing: kids are required to leave the horseplay at the door. If you don’t behave, you get called out. Also, advanced belts do get to spare in full protective gear. For my kids, Taekwondo is now more than a martial art—it’s a lifestyle. And Yong Studios is more than a studio—it’s an institution.

Stefan Atev: Positive: Professionalism, QualityHave attended the studio for about 4 years with my middle-school aged son. Great instruction, varied classes, and continuous sparring. It's a more traditional Taekwondo school that does not shy away from hand techniques in sparring. The online classes have also worked great during the Covid lockdown.

David Blair: This is the first martial arts school I ever attended. I left the District ten years ago and have trained in more schools than I care to count, but this remains the unqualified gold standard by which I judge all others. No other school I have attended matches Yong Studios in the thoroughness or precision of the instruction. What sets Yong Studios apart, in my view, is that the instructors explicitly break down each technique into its constituent parts and explain how each part should be performed, and how it adds to the greater whole. Most instructors simply demonstrate a round kick once or twice and expect the students to replicate the movement. This leads to a lot of very, very sloppy technique, particularly among the lower belts. Yong Studios instructors explicitly perform each step of the technique and insist that students learn these steps individually before attempting to perform the entire movement. This means that learning each technique takes more time, but it also means that when the student learns a technique, he or she learns it correctly. I can assure you, that’s something that far too few studios can boast. As a wise man once said, if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.

Bill Peyser: I can’t say enough good things about Yong Studios. Master Kim and Master Surage have developed and sustained a fantastic Tae Kwon Do program grounded in friendship, respect, knowledge, honesty, discipline, and strength. These values are apparent in the way they run the studio and instruct the students. Yong Studios offers a great combination of traditional Tae Kwon Do along with practical sparring training. Even though repetition is key to learning, retaining, and perfecting martial arts skills, every class is unique and offers just the right balance of stretching and fitness training. Both masters have the unique ability to demonstrate techniques, break them down step-by-step, explain their rationale and application, and fold them into the curriculum. I highly recommend this studio to kids, teens, and adults.

Colin Bartley: Both instructures know their stuff. They work really hard with all ages and abilities. No nonsense, no goofing. It's not cheap, the more you go the more cost effective it becomes, but you really need to be going at least twice a week, and try and be consistent.

Maureen Javers: My son has been taking lessons for nearly three years and loves Yongs Studios. He is nine, a brown belt and excited to continue with Tae Kwon Do for as long as possible - he can't wait to be a possible teenage teacher/helper. The staff makes the sessions fun while also challenging. They truly get to know the students and do a great job with individual teaching, in a group setting.

Jada Fife: I've been at Yong Studios now for over seven years now. It feels like a second home to me. I would highly recommend others to practice here, especially teenagers. I started pretty late (I was 11) and I always felt like I belonged. Yong Studios was the perfect place for me to grow up. The masters not only taught me taekwondo, but also how to be confident, brave, and determined, as cliche as it sounds.

Shannon: Positive: Communication, Quality, ValueI mostly go to the Bethesda studio, but it's great to have the option of Tenleytown as well for if class times at Bethesda don't work with my schedule. The studio is conveniently located right across from the Metro and is a welcoming environment for new students.

Fort Washington United: what do users think?

Esha: This is my son's first year attending FWU and I couldn't be more excited and blessed for my son to work with such a professional and polite staff. My son's tutor Ms. Nicole has worked tirelessly to make sure he not only stays on task for his grade level goals but that he also exceeds them.🙌🏽 My son also has some amazing coaches that are not only helping to teach him the various skills and techniques associated with MMA but they also teach him discipline, respect, and teamwork.😉 FWU has mastered the recipe for developing successful students and I'm glad my son is one of them.😊

Willie Hicks: Hope this review helps anyone on the fence……..our son is an energetic (kid has a lithium Ion Tesla battery), rambunctious, 100% boy. We love him to pieces but noticed his weight was slowly creeping up, his attention span, and listening skills weren’t where we wanted them to be. We wanted to be proactive and get him into a disciplined environment while also increasing his physical activity. We researched different Martial Arts Academy’s in the Fort Washington area and came across Fort Washington United. We initially called in January 2021 and spoke with Nicole. Within a week we decided to bring our son in for a trial class. The atmosphere and environment was very welcoming. The staff stopped what they were doing to invite us in, take us on a tour, and answer the zillion questions we had. Our son immediately fell in love with the class and was a participant 4-5 times a week in the evenings and on Saturday’s. Fast forward to the Spring and we were prompted with the decision to do the traditional Summer Camp for our son, or enroll him in the Summer Program offered at Fort Washington United. We are so glad we went with FWU. Our son (who turned 6 in May) has progressed immensely in the areas of reading, problem solving, communication, public speaking, water safety (swimming), and leadership. The lessons and principles instilled by the staff has turned our son into a responsible, respectful natural leader who can also throw a hell of a punch and follow with a roundhouse kick, but will also help an old lady across the street……..AWESOME STAFF! AWESOME MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM! Can’t say enough great things……wish I could give them 10 STARS!

Kisha DeSandies Lester: Earlier this spring, I was looking for a martial arts academy for my five year old son, who was about to start kindergarten. My husband and I wanted to help him get used to being about other kids, since he had been in quarantine for over a year with little to no other time to play with kids his age. We also wanted to instill confidence, respect and self-control and believe that mixed martial arts is a good way to achieve that. I had planned on starting our son in a program in the fall, but as I looked for summer camp programs, I discovered Fort Washington United (FWU). Initially, we wanted to make sure that our son could keep up with the summer program and the evening classes. The staff was great is working with us and our son to assess his ability and we were able to register him for 5-6 weeks of summer camp and the daily martial arts classes. Our son LOVES FWU! He enjoys the structure and working with the coaches and all of the moves that he learns each week. He also is making friends with the other students. Because our son doesn’t attend school nearby, we are not enrolled in the after school program, but we would if we could. Martial arts has given our son confidence and he’s excited to practice his moves at home to anyone who will watch! The summer camp was simply phenomenal! Our son loved the weekly themes, lessons and field trips they went on. The coaches taught the kids important values and taught them how to speak up, be respectful, be responsible, and be a good citizen of the academy. We also loved how the kids worked in teams, by age and presented their projects each week. We were blown away that our 5-year-old was doing PowerPoint presentations and building airplanes and coming up with business plans. There is also a wonderful education track during the summer camp week and after-school program to help keep your child learning at their grade level and beyond (if they are able to). This summer camp also prepared him for the social aspects of kindergarten (eating lunch, playing with others, transitions to different activities, keeping up with your personal items, etc.) I read a review about how this program may not be for younger kids. I would say that it would depend on the child. My son has thrived at FWU. He was one of the youngest kids in the summer program and he did great! He also is inspired and motivated by the older kids, and teens who help with the summer camp. I also think that a lot of our kids need to get a little real-world consequences for their actions when they don’t follow the rules. My son is motivated by that and the point system is an appropriate tool in the academy setting. He doesn’t like losing points because other kids on his team aren’t listening, so he tries to be a leader and example, which we like to see. Overall, I have and will continue to recommend FMU to parents. It’s a safe and nurturing place to have your kids. The staff (Steve, Nicole, Karen, Jason, Charles) are all upbeat and keep you informed on what’s going on. I love how Coaches Jason and Charles are with my son and all the kids. We love that Steve and Nicole are veterans and they have made the decision to pour into the lives of kids. Karen is always helpful, pleasant and supportive every time I see her. My husband and I have been really happy with the decision to enroll our son in this program.

Nat Geary: I've trained at UMAA since September 2018, and since then, my growth has been immense. If you're into challenging workouts, this place has you covered (I am down 40 lbs and keeping the weight off). If you're looking for fulfilling afterschool programs for children, this place is dedicated to both mental and physical success, with tutoring and homework support to go along with martial arts instruction. If you are interested in setting and achieving personal goals, I can personally attest that this gym has helped me reach new heights. I never saw myself winning a grappling tournament, but the coaches, staff, and teammates made that a reality. I cannot recommend this place enough . From ownership down to students, this place is all class. It is more than just a gym, it is a community hub.

Dawn Washington: I am the mom of a special needs child. I was very hesitant to put him in martial arts. I’m glad we did, best decision we ever made! Grappling and striking have boosted my sons self esteem. During summer camp, the group went on museum tours. Each week had a educational theme. They learned coding, finance principles and received points for each book they read over the summer. The points could be used for toys and games. Now that school has started, the focus is on homework. I worried the staff wouldn’t be one on one with my son for his studies so I didn’t bother sending his homework. Imagine my surprise when his teacher sent multiplication homework home and my son already knew it! He’d work with staff using Kahn academy. Great place, great staff!!!

Jazmin Simms: I highly recommend UMAA. My son Mason has attended the after school program for almost 2 years now and I could not be more thankful to the coaches and staff. Since attending, Mason has become a lot more confident, disciplined and an overall better student. The coaches and staff care a lot about the kids and always go the extra mile to help whether it’s with training or homework.

Steven Hoang: The United Martial Arts Academy has classes for the entire family! The classes are great for people of all ages that want to learn top rated self defense and get fit! The kids have a ton of fun during classes! I would recommend this gym to anyone again and again!

Charmicielle Goodine: This establishment does not know how to handle primary children. The punishment for a 5 year old should not be the same for a 12 year old. The point system that the children are on is very subjective. And thinking that a 5 year old should have the same responsibility as a 12 year is ridiculous. It is probably a great establishment for older students but not for younger children.

fairlane urbina: My son goes to UMAA to their after school program. The coach never misses a day to update us that my son got picked from school, in the van and when they’re in school. We celebrated my son’s 11th birthday at UMAA and the theme was Nerf Blast. The party was a “BLAST” all kids had a great time and the staffs did a “BLAST” job! I highly recommend this school. Not only they love what they do, but they care the well being of their students.

Jaquan Butler: United Martial Arts Academy is great environment to build a foundation for martial arts. With a diligent staff and wonderful community it is an excellent environment for learning, guaranteed to instill the calmness and confidence needed to succeed.

JTR Jujutsu International: what do users think?

Corinne Kramer: My kids have been attending jujitsu at JTR for over two years. I have been watching them get stronger and grow their discipline and decided I need that in my life too, so I started the Women's Self Defense class. Hoo boy is this a workout! And tons of fun, with a great staff and great classmates. If you're looking for a workout experience that can really help you grow as a person, I recommend you check out JTR.

Maura Policelli: The instructors at JTR are exceptional! Our granddaughter is learning the art of jujutsu as well as the importance of discipline, self control, respect, and integrity. She is part of an amazing community of young athletes and dedicated teachers. We are so very grateful to Master Don and Master Mobi!

Carole Bernard: I highly recommend the Women Self Defense and Adult beginner jujutsu classes. I joined the self defense class with my 2 teenage daughters 2 years ago and the jujutsu class more recently. The training has been fantastic to build up strength, stamina but more importantly to gain skills and confidence in self defense. There is a wide choice of classes during the week - 3 weekly classes for women self defense and the adult jujutsu classes are running every day! so no excuse not to train! The instructors and masters are very caring about you and your progress.

oscar sanz-paris: A real jewel in DC. There is a wealth of knowledge in a unusually large group of masters an instructors, each bringing a deep understanding and unique knowledge to share. Mater Don and Master Andrae do an incredible job creating a caring community around the dojo. My son started training 3 years ago in the juniors class, when we moved to DC. His confidence, auto-discipline and maturity has grown enormously thanks to the engaging yet effective teaching styles of master Mobi and Master Don. He enjoyed the program so much, we all decided to join in (even me...aged 50...). One of the best decision ever!

Harold Brown: I am a new student here at JTR. I don't like it here. I LOVE it here. Master Don is fabulous. He is patient and encouraging to all his students. Joining JTR has been a good experience for he so far.

Amma Hewitt: JTR jujutsu is an incredible place for children and families to grow. There is an emphasis on being the best you can be, and supporting others to be the best that they can be. This message is so refreshing in a world that emphasizes competition over collaboration. Children are reminded about the importance about practice, honesty and an earnest spirit. There are lessons here for young, old, and in between. We are so privileged to be part of the JTR community!

Amanda Budny: Excellent classes for children and adults, plus a womens self defense program. All classes focus on total body development and practical combat skills. Currently, there are classes via zoom and socially distanced in person classes. The school is very serious about smart hygiene habits which is very reassuring. I'd highly recommend this school to anyone wanting to start a martial arts journey.

Nick P: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueMy daughter joined a few months ago as a beginner and absolutely loves it. The instructors are fantastic and she has learned so much already.

Stephen Jefferson: The instructors are great. My son loves coming here and he is learning alot.

Yaseen Ahmed: Bad quality teaching and made me buy a tshirt
Response: Hi Yaseen, respectfully, we have no record of you in our system of having ever trained with us. If you did have a negative experience associated with our school, we'd love to have a conversation and learn more.

E P: This is a great place. Our son goes there and Master Lee keeps the young ones motivated and helps them with their confidence and politeness as well. Our sone loves it and is always happy after his class. We also celebrated his b-day there and it was great. Master Lee will make that date special and teach the kids some cool moves at the same time!

Krav Maga Capitol Hill: what do users think?

Kaelin Kovacik: KM Capitol Hill is great! I have never done Krav or any other form of marital art / self-defense training. I decided to sign up as a creative way to workout while also learning a useful skill. The classes have been great, the instructors are very knowledgeable and kind, and everyone is welcoming. It has also been an unexpected confidence boost. I’d recommend this studio to anyone interested in self-defense.

Jamie Morgan: This gym is amazing. For anyone familiar with Krav, the gym does a great job of combining technique and aerobic training. For anyone new to Krav, it’s a fantastic way to build on any fitness training you do and learn self defense. I’ve done all different types of workout classes for years, and this has taken my fitness to a different level. Plus the community is very welcoming! Highly recommend.

Randall Thomas: Love KM Capitol Hill! Welcoming environment for those who've never taken KM. The instructors are excellent - highly knowledgeable, take time to correct poor form, etc., and always supportive though consistently challenging students to go hard. Great facility as well.

N. Uhuru: Energetic and knowledgeable instructors. You will sweat!! Great location too with parking.

Maryeliz Point: Classes were great, I moved so it was no longer possible for me to attend. Here is the cancellation process: 1. Submit written notice of intent to cancel by mail to their headquarters. 2. Receive an email directing you to the secret login information required to access the cancellation forms of the website 3. Document you have a disability or have reached the end of your contract 4. Print, sign, and email that document back to them - noting that every time you email them their automatic bounce back is "We are currently experiencing a high volume of messages, and we appreciate your patience. Who knows - they still haven't stopped charging me and I started this process in September. Jenni Myung: Highly trained and skilled instructors, good mix of classes and levels, well-organized and run. Also, they have good swag.

Jeff Mount: The best Krav Maga training center in Washington, D.C.

Gabriella Myers: Great classes with that "everybody is welcome" atmosphere

Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do: what do users think?

Tania Trinh: I highly recommend Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do to any parent wanting their children to develop self defense, discipline and social skills. The instructors are amazing - they love kids and they are great role models for our children to follow. They are so warm, kind, and patient with our kids. The class is a very positive experience for my children. Good influence, sportsmanship, teaches them kindness and respect, etc. My children look forward to attending class and I feel my children are in a safe, nurturing environment where they can only continue to grow mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Veronica Seva-Gonzalez: We love their curriculum and instructors! Everyone is very friendly and they take really good care of your kids. We have our 7 year old and our 4 year old there. Our 7 year old son Manu has been going there since he was 4 and his transformation on a positive way was amazing. Focus, respect, and leadership are just a few of the many skills they learn here. We love it and can't wait to have our 20 months old starting here. Highly recommended!

Super Kicks: Incredible Instructors and Program! My wife and I visited the school from out of town and I am very impressed with everything they do. Their facility is immaculate. Their instructors are very encouraging and friendly. Their program is very motivational and teaches not just to be a better martial artist but also focuses on being a better person which is what martial arts should be about. If you are looking for a place to grow as a family this is the place. I would strongly recommend contacting them about becoming involved. - John Bryant / Super Kicks Karate, Salem VA.
Response: Thank you so much for such a great review!

Eric San José: The Premiere Martial Arts School. Easy to see right off of North Harrison Street servicing Arlington and the adjoining areas of Virginia. Great for Self Defense, Fitness, and Self Discipline. Men, Women, and Children. Masters Piñeda and Master Shackelford are experts in all aspects of the Martial Arts. Give your child or yourself a gift of a Lifetime.

Kevin Gray: Amar from the Harrison Shopping center spoke very highly of this place, so I had to have my kids try it out. This was by far the best decision I made.

Chi Mai: I think jhoon Rhee falls church can do much better they are more friendlier and teach good tae kwon do not this kind of poop
Response: Greetings Chi Mai - Jhoon Rhee Falls Church teaches the same style as we do. It is not WTF, ITF, or traditional. It is Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do.

Luke Moll: Been going for 9 years, great instructors and great curriculum!

Alex Frye: This place made me who I am today.

Hanna Getachew: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, Value

BETA Academy: what do users think?

Ma D: Awesome place for beginners and advanced BJJ lovers. Very friendly people. Good technics. I highly recommended this place who visiting Washington DC also who decided to start practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Guys when you browsing different clubs with thoughts about what to choose please go there and you will meet really cool professional people. Good luck everyone. Oss.

Jack Cantlay: The instruction is top notch. Your instructors are amazing and follow a coherent system of training so that each week is a new thing. The gym culture is very friendly and welcoming but I still feel like I can get competitive live rolls. It really matters that your instructors are so friendly. That goes a long way. But they still push me! I love the balance.
Response: Thank you so much Jack, we appreciate that! We pride ourselves on our welcoming community and believe that a strong community fosters growth in our students.

Thuhuong Dao: - Coach to child ratio was excellent. - Coaches did a great job working the room and - working with each child/group. - Introduction/greet for my children’s first class was great and energetic. - Disciplining the students during class was thorough and appreciated. - Dismissal of students was organized (liked how the coach only let the kids go when he say the parents).
Response: HI there! Thank you so much for the review! We appreciate your feedback and we're so happy that you experienced the professionalism of our Kids' coaches!

Tara Trinity: Coach Carlos, coach D, everyone is amazing. We love Beta!!!! My son has come into an environment that supports him and is compassionate as well as disciplined. The diversity is something I was personally looking for, and that’s something that is even more a bonus.

Walter Bayer: Great place for all-levels of Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu enthusiasts. Very beginner-friendly with knowledgeable coaches who will patiently walk you through everything you need to know. After training here for a few sessions, you'll experience the great sense of community they foster. I loved that there was also a weight room to supplement training with strength & conditioning.

Tim .G: We were in DC on vacation and they welcomed us in for open mat, even stayed later to roll. Coach Gabriel was awesome. Awesome facility! Super friendly community! I definitely recommend!

Tyrone Calvin: I’m no strange to BETA academy and every time I go, I leave better than I arrived. Everyone is very friendly and professional. The Brazilian Ju Jitsu class is informative and state of the art in self defense.

CJ Francis: I love the welcoming culture, the high level and clarity of instruction, the daily availability of no gi classes as well as gi. Also the ample amount of time given for both drilling and sparring.

Saron Dessalegn: Friendly Coaches are willing to help and give good instructions!! Definitely recommend for a great education in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.
Response: Thank you so much Saron!

Amy Putens: In honesty we could not be more thrilled with our experience with BETA! We have been apart of the BETA community for approximately 2yrs. We started out just being an attendee of their summer program. After summer was over we would drive by often and my daughter would ask- "When do we get to go back to beta?" I knew then that this was where we needed to be. When you have a daughter (who is a girlie girlie) wanting to be apart of something so much bigger than Ballet or gymnastics I was sold. We then signed up for the after school program and we haven't turned back since. The excitement both my children have for their amazing staff and program is the reward for me at the end of the day. Having being I can trust in to guild my children down the right path and for my kids to respect them is 100% why we choose BETA!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU BETA! Thank you for all that you give!!!!!!
Response: Hi Amy, thank you so much for sharing your story with us! It makes us proud to have kids as enthusiastic and motivated as yours in our Kids Program!

DC Self Defense Karate Assn.: what do users think?

Christina Sheraton: This place was a big let down. My two teenagers were not impressed by the instructor. 1st off the pics online are about 20 years old. So when you get there you're greeted by this older lady you weren't expecting. And that's the 2nd issue, the owner, Master Middleton, is in her 70's. It was like a senior citizen class. She said she teaches all the classes even though there is another instructor there who looks like he's in his 40's who we thought we were having class with. 3rd it was a red flag for me when I asked can we come and watch the regular classes and was told no. That's just suspicious to me. Any school that won't let you check out their classes, is a red flag.
Response: Our real students were shocked to hear ANY class at DCSDKA characterized as being like a senior citizen class. Nor is anyone told that they cannot watch our regular classes. We just encourage parents of young children to have their kids do a trial class rather than just watch, as some kids are intimidated by only watching. Trial classes are free--come and make your own judgement. Pics on our website are stock photos, not my past students. We have 5 instructors besides myself, but I am there for most classes. Also, I have not met a Christina Sheraton.

Gabriel Torres: I joined this school when I was about five years old I was a troubled kid in a difficult house hold. This place changed my life sensei Middleton is a saint. She teaches with love and passion. These negative reviews are appalling. This place teaches you self confidence and important lessons for life. Take a class and have fun learn skills and enjoy. Thank you sensei and sensei wolf id like to come visit the new dojo soon!
Response: Thank you Gabriel, and yes, love you lots! The passion is a blessing for me, and knowing y'all is my reward. Come visit us any time. Not much I can do about fake reviews--all from the same guy. But anyone can come and see for themselves. The new dojo has a beautiful wood floor and the upstairs gym is fully padded.

Aaron Williams: My son began his path here two years ago. I have to say, this has been a fantastic experience for us both. He looks forward to his training and practices constantly at home. Thank you Master Middleton for give this great learning environment for all people young and old.
Response: Once someone learns the discipline to practice on his own, he can apply that to school and whatever he takes on into adulthood, so I appreciate hearing this. I also love how courteous he is. Thanks!

nathan sarpal (PieEye): The teacher is nice and funny and I am able to learn a lot from her! It's definitely worth the price down to the last cent! They offer side programs that could help you exceed in the classes!
Response: Nathan, yes, and you certainly have the attitude and the drive to qualify for the Leadership or Black Belt Training programs. I'll discuss it with your Dad!

Stephania Gomez: DCSDKA has been the best investment for my son! They allow parents to participate alongside their children for the first few months to ensure the child adapts well. I was pleasantly surprised to know that my son was not only learning new technical skills, but was also being taught values and life lessons. The staff/instructions are very friendly, professional, organized, and thorough. I had tried two other martial arts organizations for my son but they always lacked structure and DCSDKA definitely has that! As far as the location I have lived in Brightwood for 25 years and was not pleased to see it being described as “ghetto”. The negative comments are simply not true. There is a fire station on the same block, plenty of parking. DC is a city where you will find a mix of businesses.I have never felt unsafe. Highly recommend!!
Response: Thanks Stephania! And yes all the stuff on the 1 star "reviews" are totally made up by a disgruntled ex-employee, but one cannot take those down, even though a court case showed those email addresses to be fake!

J. H.: Grandmaster Carol Middleton is an amazing martial arts and self-defense instructor. Her techniques are precise and expertly tailored to each situation a person might actually encounter in the real world. She and her staff also are excellent at communicating ways to improve to students, both young and old. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming (and clean)! We particularly love the way they teach children valuable life skills: how to be a good friend, how to be safe, and how to improve self-confidence and self-esteem. The karate lessons are just the icing on the cake. We highly recommend DC Karate and Self-defense for both kids and adults who want to improve discipline, defense and/or fitness. Having taught her own Martial Arts school for more than 45 years, she is incredibly competent and experienced. We love her values that are instilled in the school's motto of "discipline, respect and positive expectancy." I wouldn't trust any other dojo with my family's training.
Response: Aw, shucks. And I must say, the best part of teaching is having great students like you and yours!

Brian Frank: This has been one of the best investments in my daughters life and well-being. The courses taught not only self defense and karate, but how to raise a child to be strong, safe and confident. I take the classes alongside my daughter and plan to continue through the rest of my life. It has provided an invaluable bonding between me and my child. Don't believe the bad reviews. I was really surprised at some of them and can comment on a few. Classes are diverse, professional and well worth the money. There was never a time when a teacher didn't show up. Even when one was late, there are 2 other instructors or the Sensei to conduct the class. Sensei (Carol Middleton) is invested in every student and sits down with them to explain the course and how much it costs. I've never in my entire time there felt unsafe in the neighborhood and I do not live far from the dojo. This is a fantastic school and I wish I could give more stars. If you are interested, check it out because the first class or two are free.
Response: Thanks Brian. The bad reviews are from a guy I fired for stealing who promised then to put us out of business by making fake reviews that were real bad. None of it is true! Sensei

Justin Hunt: Great experience both for myself and for my family. We started with my son taking classes in the family class and I enjoyed it so much I later started the adult class. I have found it to be both a good workout and a challenging activity that I am improving at thanks to the instructors encouragement and ability to offer useful feedback. I also love the positivity of instruction and the life lessons Sensei does as part of the kids class, teaching self-respect, confidence and ways to deal with the challenges our kids face in school and the world.
Response: Thanks, Justin. We sure miss you guys but hope you are loving Australia!

itsfairgame: I'm very glad her studio has moved to Brightwood, NW . Its a good place to learn basics. For adults there are more appropriate instructors available I feel. I think signing a promissory note in advance for six month fees is a distraction. In my case I ended paying for no lessons because the class schedule change did not fit my new work schedule, so I think I was out 800.00. Think it through before joining.
Response: Promissory note? My students who lost their jobs got up to a year free!

Sarah Armstrong: I made multiple attempts to speak with someone over the phone, leaving several messages, all of which went unanswered. When I finally spoke with someone, I believe the owner, she was incredibly rude, she would not provide any information about the program cost structure. She also said they would NOT honor my Groupon offer which was purchased for karate lessons and is still valid. When I showed up for my appointment, it was in a house. Which is rather odd. I met with Carol who told me she runs the school. She still would not provide cost information, but considering I had my Groupon offer, I did not care. I already spent the money and at this stage simply wanted to get the lessons and be done with it. When I showed up for the class, the teacher never showed up. No one called me, and I was left waiting with several other students. When I asked them about this, they mentioned this happens frequently, either Carol is late or the other instructor, Sarah, doesn't show up at all. When I asked why, they said Carol is forgetful and Sarah doesn't care. I have no idea why anyone would pay for this type of service. I definitely will not return and have told my friends about this horrible experience.
Response: Hi Sarah, I finally discovered that my assistant was not getting the phone messages. I'm not sure who you eventually talked to, but the Intro appointments are always at the dojo, and although I wanted that Groupon taken down months ago, when it wasn't, I did honor it. I consider myself late if I am not 5 minutes early, and that has happened, but only once did the teacher not make it. It certainly is not the norm If that was the time you came, then I do apologize.

Coles Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Aaron McLaughlin: I came to Coles martial arts academy as an adult student after reading an article featured on on the cover of Washington Post magazine. I was so inspired by Master Coles’ story That I knew I had found a great teacher and my life has changed for the better in ways that I would’ve never imagined. Master Coles is one of the very best instructors in martial arts. He is also a great teacher of what it takes to be successful and confident in life!

Meena Seshamani: Master Coles is an amazing instructor and role model. He genuinely enjoys teaching martial arts and also is very good with children. My son has developed confidence, focus, and discipline, and tae kwon do class is a highlight of his week! Highly recommend this studio. Would give it 10 stars if I could!

Rochelle Fink: My family LOVES Coles Martial Arts Academy. Master Coles is very talented. He teaches kids martial arts and important lessons such as respect, paying attention, listening to parents, etc. Master Coles has incredible patience. He also has amazing control over his classes. He can quiet down even the most active child. My kids get personal attention in all the classes. They really look up to Master Coles. Master Coles teaches lessons to adults, as well as children. It's amazing how he can run a mixed-age class so that it meets to the needs of each student. Adults have their own classes and can join the children's classes. Children can't join adult-only classes. I really like the flexibility in the class schedule--many classes are offered Monday through Saturday. You just drop in at a class for your respective level. You don't need to sign-up in advance. I also really like Rachel--she sits at the front desk. She's a pleasure to talk to, and she's very accommodating. I can't say enough good things about this studio!

Danny Boccagno: Mike Coles is one of the finest Instructors in the country. Caring, with discipline in a positive way. Former World Class competitor and very skilled in the Martial Arts.

vijay surage: There is no Coles Martial Arts Academy anymore, it went out of business over a year ago. Yong Studios Tae Kwon Do is now there and it is spectacular!

Julie Mirman: My kids love going to Coles Martial Arts and have learned so much. Master Coles is fantastic with the kids and truly is a gifted instructor.

Finnegan Gavelli: Mr. Coles is a great instructor and knows how to mix in funny with values and learning. I'm Brown belt and aiming at Black belt

Karla Kirk: Master Cole is amazing, he is a wonderful teacher and an ideal role model

Capoeira Barro Vermelho: what do users think?

Rain Bian: I initially joined this group in 2013 and returned again after six years abroad. It's been wonderful to see how the group has grown and continues to be a supportive, tight-knit community. With capoeira you get a great mix of martial arts training, core-building exercises, music, Brazilian history/culture and Portuguese, and more. Mestre Bomba is a wonderful teacher who really cares about his students and brings a joyous energy to every class; and you see that openness and warmth reflected in his students as well. The group is still active online and outdoors (with effective social-distancing measures), and it's been marvelous to have this thriving space in current times.

Mason Quick: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueA welcoming group with all skill levels and supportive of new comers. Mestre Bomba is enthusiastic, spirited, and will push you to get a great workout and step up your game. The culture of capoeira is embraced at Barro Vermelho and the studio is a space of rejuvenation. Park practices are most excellent as well.

Alex Wortman: I joined Barro Vermelho with no prior experience in capoeira but had an amazing time learning from and being a part of this community. The classes are fantastic and the classmates are actively looking to help give advice/tips on how to improve. Moreover Mestre Bomba is a great teacher and really cares about his students. I'd highly recommend these capoeira classes regardless of experience or physical ability.

Natasha Baker: I have been doing capoeira for over 10 years and always look for a group to join when I move somewhere new. So when I came to DC several years ago, I was really glad I found Barro Vermelho and have been with the group ever since. Capoeira is more than a full-body workout. It is about joining a community and I have made life-long friends in the group. We not only have practices together, but we also have bbqs and other social events together, and we also do performances, like a recent one at the Brazilian Embassy for the Embassy Walk weekend. You don't have to be Brazilian or speak Portuguese or have any prior experience in martial arts. We have students of all ages, sizes, and experience levels. It is a welcoming environment and Mestre Bomba will work with you to tap into your potential.

Lisa Frumin: I craved to find a workout that challenged me while building community and that is exactly what I found in Capoeira Barro Vermelho. Mestre Bomba cares about all his students, no matter their level. He is patient and great at explaining new moves in a way to help you get it quickly. The students are not there just for a class or to improve their skill. They enjoy spending time together and are genuinely friends outside of class. They support one another's growth in capoeira and encourage one another. If you want an inviting community to learn martial arts, this is it.

Mila Reille: I've always wanted to learn capoeira and I'm so glad that I started. Mestre Bomba is an amazing and patient teacher that lives and breathes capoeira and I strongly recommend that if you've ever thought about starting capoeira, to do so here. You'll get a great workout, learn about Brazilian culture, and become apart of a supportive community.

Jason Trotman: I found Capoeira Fitness DC on groupon. I have enjoyed every minute of each class. It challenges me to improve my balance, core, and conditioning. It is an amazing experience with a great group of people. I highly recommend everyone to try a class. I guarantee you will fall in love with Capoeira, the music and history like I did.

dontae hamlett: The experience with the group Barro Vermelho is terrific! It has a great balance of physical conditioning, martial art application, Brasilian music and culture, and encouraging comradary from the instructors and the students. Another added bonus in training with this group is that you get to study under the only Capoeira master in the DMV, Mestre "Bomba" who is a native Bahian and knows his stuff.

Simone Simone: I'm over 40 and about thirty pounds overweight, so I felt intimidated at first. The group and Mestre Bomba made me feel right at home and were patient with me. Now I can confidently do all of the kicking movements and I love the workout and camaraderie. This is authentic capoeira--Mestre Bomba himself is from Brazil--and I love all aspects of the capoeira culture! The parties are also good!

Sharkey Speaks: I came to Barro Vermelho very timid - I'd watched my lover practice it many times before - flips, fast kicks, and music in Portuguese. With an almost non-existent athletic background (seriously, marching band and yoga) and serious knee and ankle injuries, I tried out the class on a two-week new student special. I could barely do the basic moves and was in a class with all advanced students who'd been practicing for years. However, instead of dirty looks and irritable sighs, I was met with encouragement and advice and assurances that everyone looked silly at first. So I came back after two weeks... and then again... and again... and after about two months, I was cartwheeling for the first time in months, beating the plateau in my weight loss, and building muscles I didn't know I had! Since then, the journey in growth has been nothing short of excitement, hard work, and continued love from the students and Mestre Bomba. I'm in love not only with the physical art and challenges and defense, but with the way capoeira cannot be separated from the culture - learning Portuguese, instruments, and history and tradition is all a part of it. The capoeira community has enhanced my life in every way and I couldn't have found a better group to enter it with.

UMS Martial Arts: what do users think?

U G H: Coch is very kindly care the children ,make healthy ,focus mine and adults leasson help more strength and give energizing, keep your body balance well, help Body looking good.

Brandon cao: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueThis place is phenomenal. Great teachers, instructors, and Masters. I have been coming here since I was 6 and now I’m 18 still continuing to practice. Highly recommend coming to learn.

jmflife 15: I honestly can say this is the best Martial Arts Studio in Falls Church. The staff is very nice, they're teachers show discipline and help their students get better, and their TaeKwonDo Camps, Birthday Parties, and After School programs are amazing. Honestly consider this place if your planning to take TaeKwonDo or if your children are planning to take it.

Ann Yeeun Kang (엥가 Yenga): UMS is the most great place to learn TKD. They teach higher advanced techniques and they training hard. The Masters and teachers are really nice and gentle. Also they love to teach and take care children also. if you are interested in learning TKD, you must come to visit here and see how great UMS is :)

Allison Deines: My children love UMS. Master Um sets a fun and challenging tone while supporting your child to succeed. The teachers are wonderful role models, funny, caring and respectful. I highly recommend!

Haroon Ali: The classes here are great. The Tae Kwon do classes support all students teaching every technique with detail, including adults and children. The Hap Ki Do classes authentically teach you how to defend yourself in real situations. All classes have good exercise to help any get in-shape

Guizen Del Canto: UMS Martial Arts is a great place to practice taekwondo. I have known and trained with Master Um for the last 7 years and with my personal experience, I highly recommend everyone who is interested to learn taekwondo. Master Um and the rest of the UMS team dedicate themselves to teach each student with 120% of their energy. They are very passionate of what they do, which makes UMS Martial Arts one of the best taekwondo school's in the Northern Virginia area.

Randon Red BoltFusion: UMS is a great place to go to learn the most advanced techniques & get the highest level of physical strength, endurance, and stamina training. The masters & teachers are full of knowledge & take their time to teach you the techniques you need in order to grow into a well rounded black belt.

Joseph Jones: By the token of time, both children and adults are tested. Whether as a hobby or as a sport, the classes are tailored to one's skillset. For instance, a child of age 6, wouldn't be required to do a tornado kick. In both, Tae Kwon Do and HapKido there is a good ratio of quality of instruction time. Also, the Afterschool Program has recently added a limousine to their arsenal. In short, both the Tae Kwon Do classes and Afterschool Program both are a beacon of excellence.

Hwabaek Choi: It seems to have a very organized system especially when it comes to after school program. Everyday has a different program, activitiey, and Tae kown Do class. It was very impressive because these various activities would get children's attentions very easily and help to get along with friends. Also, It's very clean over all!

Yong Studios Martial Arts - Bethesda: what do users think?

Andrew mahaffie: Hands down the best martial arts school in the whole DMV area! Both the DC and Bethesda locations foster a strong community of students and instructors that make the studio like a second home. Master Kim and Master Surage are both extremely qualified and passionate instructors that hold students to the same high standards that they hold themselves. I have been with Yong Studios for 17 years now and still find myself learning and growing every time I go back for a class (in addition to being a great workout!). I would highly recommend the studio to everyone kids and adults!!!

Gabriel LoScalzo: I have been a student at Yong Studios for about 12 years, and every time I take class, I learn something new. Both of the instructors are excellent. They work hard to ensure that in every class, no matter your skill level, you are working hard, breaking a sweat and learning the techniques properly -- whether it's learning a new form, practicing combinations or sparring. Taking classes as a child or as an adult teaches you how to be disciplined and how to defend yourself.

Shannon: Yong Studios took over from Coles Martial Arts back in January and they have done a great job handling the transition amongst the COVID crisis-keeping students up to date and doing what they can to still operate with everyone's safety in mind (including offering online instruction). Both Master Kim and Master Surage are extremely knowledgeable and skilled instructors, as well as genuinely good people! With classes offered every day except Sundays, depending on your availability you can really get a lot out of each month of training. Highly recommend!

Jehaan R: Yong Studios has been a part of my life for over 15 years now. I came in as an awkward 7 year old with zero coordination, no confidence, and no friends. I’m proud to say I now actually have all of those things thanks to Master Kim and Master Surage, and what they’ve built here. They make this place feel like home, and I’m a happier, stronger, more confident person because of it. If you’re looking for a place for your kid to grow in a safe space with incredible instructors and mentors, choose Yong Studios. If you’re looking for a place to continue or start your Taekwondo journey as an adult, this is it, you will not find a better studio (trust me, I’ve tried).

_ olival: Exceptional teachers make this studio great. Masters Kim and Surage combine technical expertise and high expectations for students with humor, warmth, and genuine joy in interacting with young people. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate that this studio has been almost a 2nd home for our son over the past decade, as he has grown from a skinny and fidgety 7 year old into the strong, confident high school senior he is today. If you are a parent looking for a safe place for your child to grow and thrive--Yong Studios is it!

serena loscalzo: Tae kwon do at Young studios has changed my life. I started going there when I was five years old, and I’ve never stoped going there since. They inspire they’re students to work hard in the studio, and out. During COVID, I have needed them more than ever to stay in shape, and luckily, they have installed safety measures such as mask wearing, sanitation, and social distancing. If you are not comfortable with going in studio, they have online classes.

Luke W: I started at Yong Studios back in 2010 because my parents signed me up since I needed an afterschool activity and I wasn't all that into soccer or theater. Ever since then, I haven't stopped! Master Kim and Master Surage constantly push all of their students, adult or child, to do better. Yong Studios offers a positive learning environment where students are not only encouraged by the instructors to do well, but by each other. It's definetly a place where you build long lasting and genuine relationships with all of your peers. For children specifically, Yong Studios also offers an environment where they can acquire discipline in a positive environment, develop leadership skills, and grow both physically and mentally. It's an environment where there is a clear hierarchy of ranks and where respect and focus are part of the guiding principles, but it's not a place where hazing or humiliation is in store for someone of a lower rank. To the contrary, the rank is earned every day and those who try to bully people because of their rank are quickly reprimanded. In addition, child students are put in an environment where they have more opportunities to hone leadership skills that may serve them well later in life. Higher ranking students are expected to be the more mature mentor/peers that lower ranking students can approach for help with technique or form. It's not uncommon to see students of the same age helping each other with their forms or combinations before and after class. Once a child student reaches black belt, they are also put into a position where they have the opportunity to become a student instructor, leading other groups of students in classes. The higher ranking black belts also help to judge at belt examinations and supervise other student instructors. The leadership opportunites afforded are much greater than in most other after school sports in which it is unlikely that a child will gain much leadership experience until they become a team captain in their final years of secondary school. At Yong Studios, students much younger are put in a position where they are immersed into the responsibilites of leading others from a young age which, regardless of whether or not someone intends to pursue a leadership or management related career, is still helpful in developing interpersonal skills. Ultimately, Yong Studios is a positive environment for people of all ages and for anyone interested in trying out a martial art or Taekwondo specifically, I would highly reccomend it.

Jada Fife: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueI recently switched to going to Yong Studios Bethesda as opposed to the studio in Tenleytown. Although the space is different, the same quality instruction and community is still there even in this pandemic. Classes are limited so that students can social distance and everyone wears masks. Also, parking is plentiful.

John Hansen: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueExcellent classes with instructors who have adjusted to the COVID-19 pandemic with online and in-person (with masks) instruction that has been essential to staying in shape and learning new skills in this difficult period.

Madeline Taub: Best studio in the area! The instructors really care about the students and create a community that will make you want to keep coming back. Great for children and adults!

Urban Kempo: what do users think?

Savannah Wilson: When we came to Urban Kempo, my 9 year old had no martial arts background and worried he was too old to start. However, he was welcomed with open arms at Urban Kempo. Right away, he was given the opportunity to challenge himself with kids his own age that had far more experience, and he rose to the challenge. He always looks forward to going to the Dojo and can't wait to show us what he's learned when he gets home. We have noticed an improvement in his focus and confidence since he began at Urban Kempo. We have all enjoyed getting to know the supportive Sensei's and other students.

Madina Kassengaliyeva: As our five year old put it today “I’d rather stay at the dojo than watch cartoons” Urban Kempo has fantastic teachers (we especially adore Sensei Soraya), a wonderful community, and just a really fun vibe! We are so glad that kiddo has a place to learn self-control and build his skills and confidence.

Dr. Ellen Fitzenrider: My teen daughter started karate at Urban Kempo because we live nearby and wanted an activity for her for fun and fitness. She got that and so much more! UK is a supportive community, Sensei Mike and Sensei Sean are so awesome connecting with all of their students whether experienced adult black belts, or beginners starting on white. The culture they set with all of their students Classes are fun, offered most nights and Saturday. We pay a flat monthly rate and get more than our money's worth: my daughter is there usually 5 days a week and loves it. It's helping her develop her concentration , focus, and to set goals for her own success. Highly recommend if you're a parent looking to get their kid involved in something that will help them grow in more ways than one AND have fun and challenge themselves. The adult advanced/brown & black belt students also clearly create good friendships.

Matt Briggs: We had a fantastic experience at Urban Kempo. The instructors are so good at what they do -- really good at teaching skills and connecting with the kids in a fun, positive, inclusive environment. Our kids loved going and were sad when we moved away from the area and couldn't continue with lessons. We hope to return to Urban Kempo in the future when we move back to the DC area. Special thanks to Sean and Mike for being patient, innovative, and flexible with our kids!

ZW: Great community resource for our two young boys. They loved the classes from day one. Owner mike is great with the kids, as are his crew. This is a quality new club with lots of room to grow. Our boys would definitely still be there, but for having been posted abroad.

Mark Lofthus: This organization is excellent. Urban Kempo was my very first Martial Arts experience. Before I made the decision to sign up as a student I took another free trial course just for comparison. I was lucky to have had Urban Kempo as my first class because if the second location was my first experience I would have never given Martial Arts a second try.

Grandmaster Taylor: Sensei Herway is an amazing Instructor with an energetic spirit of community. His approach to teaching new students is patient and enthusiastic, while higher ranked students can expect a very focused and results oriented Instructor. Urban Kempo studio has been in existence for more than five years, Sensei Herway has been training in the Kempo system for more than a decade. His dedication to health and fitness and desire to advance himself within the Black Belt ranks, has shown him to be a most worthy student of higher knowledge in Kempo. Because of his exceptional talent and humility, more than a year ago I decided to become his Instructor in the Martial Arts and Mentor, to help with his goal of expanding the Urban Kempo studios name throughout the Virginia and the DC Metro Region. If you choose to train at the Urban Kempo studio, I’m sure you will be very pleased with the quality of your Martial Arts learning experience. Grandmaster Paul Taylor 10th Degree Black Belt, Z-Ultimate Self Defense Studios

Heba Mahmoud: Urban Kempo is the best. My son started training here in August 2013 and he has grown and developed leaps and bounder under Sensei Mike. Every instructor that my son has trained with has been patient, understanding, funny, but still able to instill the principles of kempo.

Dedra Curteman: I don't regularly post reviews on businesses, but based on our family's experience with this company/dojo, I'm making an exception. Sensei Mike runs a top-notch facility that that the kids love and more importantly, where kids gain a foundation for the themes emphasized in the dojo: 1) self control and 2) respect. I can't count the number of times I've gone back to the dojo and these two themes because it is a constant in my son's 5 year old life--whether the application of those themes are for the classroom or soccer field, Urban Kempo provides a ground work for life.

A. Elghaz: Great place to learn martial arts and discipline. Sensei Mike is awesome, and talented. I have not seen anyone who come close to his ability to work with and develop kids!!
