BETA Academy: what do users think?

Ma D: Awesome place for beginners and advanced BJJ lovers. Very friendly people. Good technics. I highly recommended this place who visiting Washington DC also who decided to start practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Guys when you browsing different clubs with thoughts about what to choose please go there and you will meet really cool professional people. Good luck everyone. Oss.

Jack Cantlay: The instruction is top notch. Your instructors are amazing and follow a coherent system of training so that each week is a new thing. The gym culture is very friendly and welcoming but I still feel like I can get competitive live rolls. It really matters that your instructors are so friendly. That goes a long way. But they still push me! I love the balance.

Thuhuong Dao: - Coach to child ratio was excellent. - Coaches did a great job working the room and - working with each child/group. - Introduction/greet for my children’s first class was great and energetic. - Disciplining the students during class was thorough and appreciated. - Dismissal of students was organized (liked how the coach only let the kids go when he say the parents).

Tara Trinity: Coach Carlos, coach D, everyone is amazing. We love Beta!!!! My son has come into an environment that supports him and is compassionate as well as disciplined. The diversity is something I was personally looking for, and that’s something that is even more a bonus.

Tim .G: We were in DC on vacation and they welcomed us in for open mat, even stayed later to roll. Coach Gabriel was awesome. Awesome facility! Super friendly community! I definitely recommend!

Tyrone Calvin: I’m no strange to BETA academy and every time I go, I leave better than I arrived. Everyone is very friendly and professional. The Brazilian Ju Jitsu class is informative and state of the art in self defense.

CJ Francis: I love the welcoming culture, the high level and clarity of instruction, the daily availability of no gi classes as well as gi. Also the ample amount of time given for both drilling and sparring.

Saron Dessalegn: Friendly Coaches are willing to help and give good instructions!! Definitely recommend for a great education in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.

DC Aikido Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

walter lewis: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueAll of the staff are very empowering and professional. I felt welcomed. The instructors are very patient and humble. I would highly recommend DC Aikido to anyone seeking to develop self confidence, patience, and self defense skills.

Gideon Culman: Nothing but high praise for DC Aikido! I joined the studio last summer for two reasons: to work up a sweat and to use aikido as a physical prism that casts new light on the conversations I conduct day-in, day-out for work as a life coach. From day 1 it has superseded my expectations in the following ways: Everybody is supportive. Anytime I have been stuck, somebody has been there to show me the way. The instructors are eager and attentive. The sparkle on the sheen of DC Aikido’s bright culture is its students, who patiently and respectfully help bring less advanced students to their next level. Every lesson is enlightening. Each class points to new ways I can better serve my clients. Whether we study balance, flexibility, striking or grabbing, not a single lesson goes by without offering up new insights. These insights translate immediately into more adroit and powerful conversations – and satisfied clients.

Shah Alom Khokon: Good for kids.

Fort Washington United: what do users think?

Willie Hicks: Hope this review helps anyone on the fence……..our son is an energetic (kid has a lithium Ion Tesla battery), rambunctious, 100% boy. We love him to pieces but noticed his weight was slowly creeping up, his attention span, and listening skills weren’t where we wanted them to be. We wanted to be proactive and get him into a disciplined environment while also increasing his physical activity. We researched different Martial Arts Academy’s in the Fort Washington area and came across Fort Washington United. We initially called in January 2021 and spoke with Nicole. Within a week we decided to bring our son in for a trial class. The atmosphere and environment was very welcoming. The staff stopped what they were doing to invite us in, take us on a tour, and answer the zillion questions we had. Our son immediately fell in love with the class and was a participant 4-5 times a week in the evenings and on Saturday’s. Fast forward to the Spring and we were prompted with the decision to do the traditional Summer Camp for our son, or enroll him in the Summer Program offered at Fort Washington United. We are so glad we went with FWU. Our son (who turned 6 in May) has progressed immensely in the areas of reading, problem solving, communication, public speaking, water safety (swimming), and leadership. The lessons and principles instilled by the staff has turned our son into a responsible, respectful natural leader who can also throw a hell of a punch and follow with a roundhouse kick, but will also help an old lady across the street……..AWESOME STAFF! AWESOME MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM! Can’t say enough great things……wish I could give them 10 STARS!

Kisha DeSandies Lester: Earlier this spring, I was looking for a martial arts academy for my five year old son, who was about to start kindergarten. My husband and I wanted to help him get used to being about other kids, since he had been in quarantine for over a year with little to no other time to play with kids his age. We also wanted to instill confidence, respect and self-control and believe that mixed martial arts is a good way to achieve that. I had planned on starting our son in a program in the fall, but as I looked for summer camp programs, I discovered Fort Washington United (FWU). Initially, we wanted to make sure that our son could keep up with the summer program and the evening classes. The staff was great is working with us and our son to assess his ability and we were able to register him for 5-6 weeks of summer camp and the daily martial arts classes. Our son LOVES FWU! He enjoys the structure and working with the coaches and all of the moves that he learns each week. He also is making friends with the other students. Because our son doesn’t attend school nearby, we are not enrolled in the after school program, but we would if we could. Martial arts has given our son confidence and he’s excited to practice his moves at home to anyone who will watch! The summer camp was simply phenomenal! Our son loved the weekly themes, lessons and field trips they went on. The coaches taught the kids important values and taught them how to speak up, be respectful, be responsible, and be a good citizen of the academy. We also loved how the kids worked in teams, by age and presented their projects each week. We were blown away that our 5-year-old was doing PowerPoint presentations and building airplanes and coming up with business plans. There is also a wonderful education track during the summer camp week and after-school program to help keep your child learning at their grade level and beyond (if they are able to). This summer camp also prepared him for the social aspects of kindergarten (eating lunch, playing with others, transitions to different activities, keeping up with your personal items, etc.) I read a review about how this program may not be for younger kids. I would say that it would depend on the child. My son has thrived at FWU. He was one of the youngest kids in the summer program and he did great! He also is inspired and motivated by the older kids, and teens who help with the summer camp. I also think that a lot of our kids need to get a little real-world consequences for their actions when they don’t follow the rules. My son is motivated by that and the point system is an appropriate tool in the academy setting. He doesn’t like losing points because other kids on his team aren’t listening, so he tries to be a leader and example, which we like to see. Overall, I have and will continue to recommend FMU to parents. It’s a safe and nurturing place to have your kids. The staff (Steve, Nicole, Karen, Jason, Charles) are all upbeat and keep you informed on what’s going on. I love how Coaches Jason and Charles are with my son and all the kids. We love that Steve and Nicole are veterans and they have made the decision to pour into the lives of kids. Karen is always helpful, pleasant and supportive every time I see her. My husband and I have been really happy with the decision to enroll our son in this program.

Dawn Washington: I am the mom of a special needs child. I was very hesitant to put him in martial arts. I’m glad we did, best decision we ever made! Grappling and striking have boosted my sons self esteem. During summer camp, the group went on museum tours. Each week had a educational theme. They learned coding, finance principles and received points for each book they read over the summer. The points could be used for toys and games. Now that school has started, the focus is on homework. I worried the staff wouldn’t be one on one with my son for his studies so I didn’t bother sending his homework. Imagine my surprise when his teacher sent multiplication homework home and my son already knew it! He’d work with staff using Kahn academy. Great place, great staff!!!

Jazmin Simms: I highly recommend UMAA. My son Mason has attended the after school program for almost 2 years now and I could not be more thankful to the coaches and staff. Since attending, Mason has become a lot more confident, disciplined and an overall better student. The coaches and staff care a lot about the kids and always go the extra mile to help whether it’s with training or homework.

Steven Hoang: The United Martial Arts Academy has classes for the entire family! The classes are great for people of all ages that want to learn top rated self defense and get fit! The kids have a ton of fun during classes! I would recommend this gym to anyone again and again!

fairlane urbina: My son goes to UMAA to their after school program. The coach never misses a day to update us that my son got picked from school, in the van and when they’re in school. We celebrated my son’s 11th birthday at UMAA and the theme was Nerf Blast. The party was a “BLAST” all kids had a great time and the staffs did a “BLAST” job! I highly recommend this school. Not only they love what they do, but they care the well being of their students.

Jaquan Butler: United Martial Arts Academy is great environment to build a foundation for martial arts. With a diligent staff and wonderful community it is an excellent environment for learning, guaranteed to instill the calmness and confidence needed to succeed.

Lloyd Irvin's Mixed Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Will O.: 10/10 recommend to anyone and everyone of any age, shape, size. I stepped in for the first time around Nov 2017 and knew it was the place for me to be. The atmosphere of excellence is present whether you go train in the morning or evening; you’ll always see pros and world champions training. It’s a very welcoming place for people who just want to go in and lose weight, the elderly, even people who never threw one punch in their life. Master Donnie, Master Lloyd, Coach Jamal I’ve always been able to reach out and talk with them after classes. I’ve become more overall healthy since coming here, built better habits, I’ve learned self confidence here, the power of positive self affirmation, and much more. Big thanks to this amazing team.

Scott Cook: Lloyd Irvin MMA is amazing! Not only does the academy put out some of the best BJJ & MMA fighters in the world, it’s wonderfully structured for beginners and children as well. Friendly and welcoming environment where you’ll feel like family from day one. The instructors are top notch, you get to learn from champions. Even if competition isn’t something that interests you, knowing that the instructors are teaching you moves that work on the highest level gives confidence that you’re learning stuff that really works! No matter your goals, whether it’s to lose weight and get in better shape, build confidence and self-esteem, be in a goal oriented and positive environment, learn something new and make friends, fill a competitive void or you want to have a child that is happy, confident and has the tools to protect themselves against bullies... LLOYD IRVIN MMA IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!

SkyHy Consultants LLC: Best Bjj /mma gym in the state(Maryland) with a super kids program and an awesome adult program as well. And the cool thing about it is you learn with some of the best Bjj team in the world .

MOM BOSS: We come from Texas when it’s training camp time. Everyone is very welcoming. Very professional. Great facility. They have a great kids program that I can’t wait to enroll my little one soon when he’s old enough! Coach’s are all amazing! And they have a handful of CHAMPION level fighters that come out of team Lloyd Irving! So wether you are a beginner wanting to see what MMA is about or goal is to compete I highly recommend this place!

Rhiannon Odom: Lloyd Irvin’s gym is hands down the best jiu jitsu training in the DMV. I’ve hopped around a few different gyms before getting the invite to Lloyd’s gym and there’s no comparison. He takes ALL of his athletes goals seriously and puts everything into his students, even if he is out of town to coach and support his UFC fighters, he is checking in on us and letting us know what we should be working on in his absence. He pushes his athletes to reach their full potential mentally and physically. The environment is very clean, safe, and respectful. I’m glad I’ve found my gym home and I wouldn’t recommend any other gym for jiu jitsu training.

Jim K: The most successful Jiu Jitsu school run by an American. Top notch coaching and instruction that produces WORLD CHAMPIONS at every age level and every belt level. World champion kids. World champion adults. White belt through black belt. Highly structured, world class kids program. These kids are not only learning self defense, they’re learning life skills and building good habits that give them a competitive edge in school and the workplace. Lots of kids in the kids program at Lloyd Irvin’s Martial Arts Academy have not only won championships but have excelled in the classroom. Lots of kids have gone to college and thrived, and have moved forward to become upstanding citizens of their communities. Many of the kids are now giving back, teaching other kids how to be champions on and off the mat. Talk about building strong families and helping the community! It doesn’t get better than that! And sure, the competitors win. The kids win, the adult competitors win. But there is more to this program than just competing and winning. So many kids and adults that have made the smart decision to train at Lloyd Irvin’s Martial Arts Academy have achieved personal goals, like: — Shed unwanted body fat — Become more confident — Learn how to defend oneself in a fight — Do better in school — Perform better at work — Improve focus — Feel safer on the streets — Make new friends — Be part of a successful TEAM — And so much more... The list of benefits you could receive from joining a school like this can go on and on, so the best advice I could give is to call the school immediately and get started NOW. I love this place and always will and I am confident you will too.

Full Circle Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Shai Henderson: One of the greatest decisions of my life was to join the Combat Kuntao program here at Full Circle Martial Arts Academy. I have learned so much more than just the physical aspect of martial arts and it shows in my day to day life. The family environment and the genuine people is what captured me first, everything else is just a SWEET bonus!

Carene Simon: Full Circle Martial Arts Academy provides an amazing program for the community! The staff and instructors foster a family atmosphere that is welcoming and friendly. They are very professional and teach respect and self confidence. I highly recommend this school. Plus, they are COVID-19 conscious.

Rob Smith: Having been involved with martial arts prior to being introduced with Full Circle, I had a subconscious expectation all martial arts training being somewhat the same. Any notion I previously had has been far, far exceeded!! The focus on all participants having a high level of moral values, respect for all people as well as respect for martial arts, the intentionality around family/ the spirit of family being a cornerstone of that community and the community at large, the commitment to young people being molded into well-disciplined, respectful, intelligent, strong citizens, all those characteristics and more, have made the Full Circle environment a place that I trust having my family develop, fellowship, and interact on many levels. Great, highly recommended institution!!

Azeb Kinder: When I visited Full Circle in February (2020) , I was apprehensive about taking up martial arts at my age and with no experience. During that first visit everyone was so warm and welcoming, they answered all of my questions and made me feel comfortable and confident. I’ve been training with them ever since. Grand Master Scott and the Guros are amazing instructors and it truly feels like family!

Diane Cannon: My son have been attending Full Circle Martial Art twice week for a years and he has been doing well. It was a family decision to put my son into martial arts program so he could learn how to protect himself and build up his confidence. Full Circle has met all my expectation for my son. There are professional people work there and a great men and women who are good mentors for young people. I will be looking into summer camp for my daughter. I do recommend this school for any child.

Shanietta Muhammad: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueI love Full Circle Martial Arts Academy. From the moment you walk in it feels like family. The instructors are GREAT and the atmosphere is very nurturing. My only regret is not bringing my family there sooner.

Hope Cruz Clark: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueFull Circle is for everyone - young and old, male or female. They do not just teach self-defense, but they also help builds self-esteem and grow leaders. The school is a family atmosphere and the owner consistently gives back to the community. Check them out and I promise that you will be glad that you did.

District Martial Arts | MMA Gym: what do users think?

Drew Ehlers: Positive: ProfessionalismThe classes that I attended at District were great! BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai- all professionally coached, and the group of men that I trained with were exceptional. Trainers and Participants all were very helpful in making sure everyone was progressing.

Rachel Wang: The community at DMA was incredibly welcoming even for beginners -- people remembered my name and gave me helpful tips from the very first class I attended. Not only do they have boxing and muay thai classes, they also have weekly yoga, which I really appreciated. Definitely recommend checking out this community, even if you’re a beginner like me!

Gerald Bryant: Pros: The gym offers a good variety of martial arts with instructors that are very knowledgeable and lead great classes.Cons: Gym is smaller so make sure to schedule classes enough ahead of time to ensure a slot in the class.

Andrew Turner: My girlfriend and I attended a free trial class the other day. At first we were both nervous and confused, but this was partly because we showed up late and without signing our waivers yet. When we jumped in we felt a bit out of place, but that changed quickly. I have a small amount of experience but my girlfriend has next to none but we both found the MMA class to be accommodating (especially with the kind and patient instructor). Overall, a wonderful environment with quality equipment, great people, and excellent instruction.

Laura Gross: Positive: QualityI really enjoy my classes at this gym, everyone is so welcoming. For a new person just getting into martial arts all my instructors were super supportive and provided clear direction. Whether you are looking to change up your workouts or learn a new skill I would highly recommend giving this gym a try.

Gori Olufon: I go to District Martial Arts for Brazilian Juijitsu, BJJ and it is excellent. The coaches are knowledgeable and encouraging and the facility is beautiful. I’m really looking forward to the new Judo class! Here’s to another amazing year!

Maryland Jeet Kune Do Academy: what do users think?

Mario Santizo: Sifu Jaeger is a class act who genuinely cares about his students. He not only cares about their growth and development in self defense but also cares about them as people. I’ve had the pleasure of training with him on several occasions and if I lived closer I would definitely join his school. He’s not only a talented practitioner but a talented instructor as well. Take the time to give Maryland Jeet Kune Do a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Julie Fitzpatrick: My daughter and I have both had the opportunity to attend women’s self defense seminars at Maryland Jeet Kune Do Academy. The instructors are excellent at communicating material, providing hands-on instruction, and following up with constructive feedback. My daughter was so motivated by the experience that she has taken their Escape to Gain Safety seminar three times. Maryland JKD is genuinely interested in your journey in martial arts, fitness, health, and self-protection.

Abra Burkett: I started training with JB Jaeger at MDJKD almost 5 years ago. I was looking for another martial art to supplement my Muay Thai training. I stumbled across MDJKD, and reached out to JB. Since then, I have become a better mover and martial artist, and have developed a deeper appreciation for martial arts, as a whole. MDJKD offers a comprehensive approach to Jeet Kune Do, with a focus on efficacy of motion. JB is a skilled and patient instructor, and I am lucky to have been training with him for all this time.

Messier Twenty: Shifu JB has a great practice! He has attracted a talented group of individuals who work together under his balanced approach to become better martial artists. By balanced I mean they spar, but with an eye towards learning and safety so you are in one piece to practice some more. What good would it be if you were too injured to defend yourself because you were practicing to defend yourself. JB’s program makes sure you are learning techniques, but also how to apply them via safe sparring. Highly recommend!

Larry Guo: Having been a student for a little over a year now, I can say without a doubt JB can get you to where you want to be in both self defense and fitness. Do not worry if you are an adult with a busy schedule! JB is fully aware of your progress at all times and will take the time to keep you on the right track. With so much to learn and a lot of time to perfect your moves, you will never feel left out in class.

Pentagon Mixed Martial Arts: what do users think?

Michael “Newmie” Newman: Fantastic facilities, welcoming owners & staff, excellent initiative and follow up from highly-qualified & patient trainers. My son & i both excel (soar!) at every professionally-designed training session and class at Pentagon MMA. Teddy is my regular trainer, consistently showing up to push me, break me, lift me when my own efforts are lacking. Sifting out the weak vibes with slick music, his enabling fortitude is the exact coaching you will benefit from as well. Trust this reborn, remade 55 yr old “dad with gray hair and missing memory” — the place to find your fit self again is right here at Pentagon MMA. #[As known well, the discipline must come from within YOU. For this gym and the facilities, along with the experienced staff, and your committed presence combined is THE ONE *CATALYST* YOU need to patiently push yourself to find again once-held that holistic belief in yourself… and achieve grand, new fitness goals. Results guaranteed!]

Joshua Ogboenyiya: I have been a member at pentagon for about 3 years now and I can’t think of a better gym to train at. All the coaches take their time explaining the different techniques, and they really have an attention for detail. I can tell this is more than fitness and being in shape. Everyone at pentagon truly wants students to grow and improve as martial artists. Everyone is warm and inviting and you can immediately get the feeling of a community among the student, coaches, and staff. I would recommend training at pentagon to anyone who has thought about joining a gym but hasn’t taken the leap yet – you won’t regret it.

B: Thoroughly enjoyed my time at PMMA over the course of 3-4 years. Was a great way to keep in shape while learning self defense arts. Also a great way to keep yourself humble while sparring against other focused driven individuals. Can’t recommend enough. Coaching staff was also excellent abs they kept the place clean and tidy.

Carl Weis: After looking at several MMA gyms in the area, I decided to give Pentagon MMA a try. Their involvement in the community and kids programs are what appealed to me at first, because I was looking for a place that my 4 year old could attend, but it was everything else about this gym that convinced me to start training there as well. This place is awesome! The staff, instructors, and students are very professional, friendly, and welcoming. I have seen so much improvement with my son and his behavior after going here, and I have seen huge improvement in my training as well. I cannot say enough good things about this gym. If you are looking to get into martial arts, Muay Thai, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, or any of their other programs you owe it to yourself to try it out. I promise you won’t regret it. You will get into the best shape of your life, and will be part of a family that encourages you to be your best self inside and outside of the gym. You will make friends and above all you will build habits that last. Thank you for everything that you do. I’m proud to represent Pentagon MMA and recommend it to everyone I know.

Eleanor D: I came to Pentagon MMA after trying a few other martial arts gyms in the area and immediately liked the atmosphere, the classes, and the people. The trial program was awesome, and I signed up to start the second I finished it. While I love the Muay Thai classes, and how they push you outside your comfort zone and work every part of your body, the best thing about this place is the community they have cultivated. There’s no better place to train!

Celine Ferguson: This gym is amazing! The staff is friendly, professional, and incredible at what they do. They’ve made me feel welcome since day one and really do their best to make sure you understand the technique & train hard. In just a few months I’ve learned so much and still feel physically challenged every time I walk in. I highly recommend pentagon MMA.

Nicholas Hunter: I started at Pentagon MMA when I was only 11 years old in the young warriors program. Ever since I started the instructors there focused on teaching not only martial arts but discipline and respect too. They made sure to push everyone in the class and to make sure they learned not only martial arts but life lessons as well. I am now 18 and still attend classes at pentagon MMA however, now they are the adult classes. The instructors make the classes a lot of fun for everyone while also pushing us to become better. The environment at pentagon MMA is one of the best things about the gym. Everyone is so nice and always willing to help, it’s just one big friend group where everyone has fun.

Kogaion Academy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Judo: what do users think?

Ed Herranz: The last time I studied judo was around 15 years ago in NJ at Tech Judo. While there were some very good coaches there, I did not feel they cared much about my safety, and they allowed other students to be too rough with lesser experienced students as myself. I was hesitant to go back to judo again now in my 50’s, but Sensei Victor is the best judo teacher I have ever had and he’s deeply concerned about the safety of his students. He helped me realize it’s never too late to go back to Judo.

Paola Martinez: Kogaion Academy is one of the best places that I’ve been trained Judo at. They helped me improve my Judo skills for my next competition. I even drove 8 hours just to train with them with my family!

Gary Hilleshiem: Outstanding school. Instructors had high level detail and value added in transitions and drills throughout the entire class. Students were encouraging, welcoming friendly to visitors. If you are in the area and looking to start jiujitsu or just visiting do yourself a favor and check this place out.

Isra Harahap: The perfect and complete martial arts dojo!! I considered my self lucky to find Kogaion Academy, it is the perfect and complete gym with a bargain price. This a dojo where you can workout as a beginner, an experienced martial arts practitioner, or you can be a competitor it you want test what you have learned. You can get great training and instructions everyday and in a very safe environment. Victor and Beatrice are great instructors with attention to details and will work and engage with you individually in the class, it feels like you are getting a private lesson. There are very few gyms that will teach you Judo and Brazilian Jujitsu the combination gives you the knowledge to safely take your opponent/attacker from standing to the ground and controlling the person on the ground. You can come to workout at the dojo everyday of the week, again this is a bargain!!

Kristen Medvetz: I started doing BJJ because my husband kept begging me to try it with him. Originally I had agreed thinking, hey, I’ll try anything once. Now I can’t get enough of it. I was immediately welcomed by so many kind and accepting people. I was amazed at what these people could do and I wanted to be just like them. It’s a great place for beginners and experienced people alike. There’s a good variety of people, and a great group of women. If you’re a woman thinking about doing BJJ this is a great place to start.

Samuel Salazar: For those who are looking for a nice environment where you can learn something you’re interested in like Brazilian Jiu jitsu or Judo, then this place is perfect for anyone out there at any age. The moment you join this academy, you enter into a world where you’re always welcomed, a world where you become part of a family that’s always there to help you to achieve your goals. Whether your goal to own all the belts in Judo or to simply burn some calories, this is a good place to start or continue this path. People here are really nice, supportive, fun, and overall it’s place where you can enjoy the experience of martial arts. The schedule of this academy is pretty solid since there’s classes every day and you can participate in tournaments if you want as well. Don’t feel committed to this academy either, if it’s not your thing, there’s no shame in leaving, you can always comeback again with the doors open. Just want to mention that there’s an extreme low amount of teenagers in this academy from what I’ve seen in the adult classes, the majority are men and women although mostly men. If you’re a woman, you’re always welcome to come, there’s no judgment or anything like that, in fact, the best fighter I know is a woman, so don’t feel intimidated or ashamed if you’re interested in learn something new or trying to progress on your favorite martial art, we are all here to help and support you. Now, for the teenagers, unless you’re interested fighting people who are like 50 pounds heavier than you, then this is the right place for you, take it from a guy in his high school years who’s been here for over a year. Although we can change this situation if more teenagers join. This is without a doubt a good academy worthy of what it has to offer to everyone.

Beatrice Jin: I have been training at Kogaion for three years. While we train hard, Victor also places a high emphasis on skill development and learning. The jiujitsu and judo teaching is rooted in fundamental principles but techniques are always updated to keep up with the sports which are growing and modernizing. In my opinion this is one of the best places to become a well rounded grappler, where students are proficient on their feet and on the ground, in the gi and without it.

Min Hwangpo: Kogaion is a great environment with friendly people. There is a lot of talent and knowledge in the room. Professor Vasile and coach Jin are detailed in their instruction. Their teachings translate well into competitions. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to learn or be part of the Judo/BJJ community.

Legacy Martial Arts: what do users think?

Isolda Montiel: I have seen Master Felix, Mr. Cameron and Miss Deedee all teach and I think they create an atmosphere that feels like family. The teaching is high energy and they truly care for the students.

Wilmer Castro: Master Felix Garcia is an amazing Martial Arts instructor. His knowledge to reach can easily be grasped and absorbed by students. His self defense can be life saving.

Jonathan Ferrari: Brazu Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lead by Professor Barros is second to none. Brazu is "the real deal" Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There is a real family atmosphere where all are welcome, regardless of age, experience or fitness level. Professor Doug teaches Jiu-Jitsu with real-life applications in mind. He has medaled at some of the most prestigious Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the United States, and coached many successful competitors in his nearly 25 years of Jiu-Jitsu. However, competition is not his focus, rather it is teaching all students the art of Jiu-Jitsu. If you are looking for a new challenge, want to get into shape, build your self-confidence, come check out Brazu Jiu-Jitsu Academy at Legacy Martial Arts in Silver Spring, MD

Borey Song: We’ve tried a few Martial arts programs in the areas or our kids but here at Legacy martial arts, we found the programs that best suited the needs for my kids. Under the tutelage of Master Felix, my son and daughter have gained the confidence and discipline that allow them to grow as individuals and they are having fun doing so. Highly recommended for any looking for authentic martial arts instruction.

Ciri Fenzel: Legacy Martial Arts is the best martial arts studio your child could possibly attend in the D.C. / Silver Springs, MD area. Master Felix is more than an amazing instructor, he is an exceptional mentor that has the ability to bring out the very best in people. Our son has trained under Master Felix for three years, and we saw results that could only Master Felix could deliver. Legacy Martial Arts has our highest recommendation.

Ferddy Calderon: Master Felix and the rest of the staff at Legacy Martial Arts is very professional and friendly to both students and parents. This is a good place when you want your child to learn discipline, self defense, self worth and the value of teamwork through the martial arts. Highly recommend Legacy Martial Arts!!

Fifty/50 Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

JohnathanBolton: I am visiting from Hawaii and wanted to train at Fifty/50. I came straight from the airport after traveling over 10 hours. The lunchtime class was great. Very friendly students and instructors. You must visit if you are in the DC area.

Jordyn Short: I used to train at Fifty/50 when I lived in the DC area. The instruction was excellent. It’s one of the best BJJ schools in the area. They do a great job teaching fundamentals so you will have a solid base as you progress. The one thing anyone should know going in is it isn’t a school for people who don’t have “thick skin.” Instructors are genuinely encouraging, but they can also be a bit heavy handed/savage if you do something stupid (e.g. unsafe rolling). Ultimately, I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to go in with an open mind, good attitude, and “no quit” mentality.

Ryan Shen: Loves all of my coaches here. Best place for jiu-jitsu and striking in the the area. The one thing that makes me reconsider relocating out of Virginia is this gym. Will keep training here for as long as I can.

Justin Rader: Absolutely phenomenal place to train!! I am a 2X No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt World Champion and have been practicing jiu-jitsu for 21 years, and I visit 50/50 Martial Arts often and continue to learn!! Ryan Hall, Jen Hall, and the entire staff of instructors are some of the best in the world, and not only that, they are fantastic teachers!! I have never once visited and left feeling I took nothing away. I have improved with each visit!! And to top it all off, everyone is super friendly and welcoming, and they truly have a fantastic family environment that helps build and promote all who are there while still keeping that "old school" mentality which is so important!! Clean academy, amazing instructors, fantastic written curriculum to follow, and a great group of people who will make you feel like family!! I could not recommend 50/50 Martial Arts academy enough!! If you live in Virginia, this is 100% the place to train!!

D C: Great place to train. Both bjj and striking program is awesome and taught by great instructors. Everyone is super friendly and the school has a very accommodating schedule

CA Babs911: Great academy! One of the best on the East Coast. My son and I have been training their for for eight months and the training/learning is awesome. The academy is very family oriented and has an outstanding after school program for the kids, plus a summer camp for them as well. Fifty/50 goes above and beyond to ensure all their students are well trained in BJJ by world class professionals!

Lauren Middleton: I trained there back when i lived in the states... its hard being a BJJ black belt and still get expert instruction.. Jen Hall was my instructor back in 2016 and boy do i miss her experience.. living in Switzerland now i find it hard to train at an elite level. Do yourself a favor and join this place it can change/Safe your life...

Yamasaki Academy Springfield: what do users think?

Josh Quinquinio: My girlfriend had been training at Yamasaki Springfield for a couple years before I came in to visit at the start of 2019. I’ve since been training Brazilian jiu-jitsu here and my only regret is not having started sooner. Neto and all the instructors give phenomenal training and coaching to help you succeed and reach your goals. The gym has training partners of all skill levels, sizes, and from all walks of life. As a beginner, it can be challenging but everyone is so friendly and encouraging. It’s a great environment. Love the people and the experience I’ve had here.

Andrew Schaeffer: The Yamasaki Academy is the best Jiu-Jitsu school in the United States and Neto is by far one of the best instructors in the world. I am fortunate to have such experienced coaches to help develop my skills. The facility is top notch and the other members are very welcoming. I highly recommend it to grapplers of all levels.

Phillip Zierke: I have been a part of the Yamasaki family for nearly 10 years and can say that Neto is among one of the best instructors as a technician and coach. Weither your an experienced grappler or brand new to the world of Jiu Jitsu Yamasaki Academy of Springfield is very accommodating!

Andrew Hansen: I have been training at the yamasaki academy for nearly 4 years. I have spent two years of that time at the Springfield location. I have been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for about 12 years time total. Most of that time my wife has been in the military and we have been forced to relocate often. I am extremely blessed to have landed here. Yamasaki academy of Springfield has brought out the best in me. Neto is a wonderful man with an unrivaled passion for his students and his instruction is second to none. Jiu Jitsu is literally his life’s work and I have met few people who take it as seriously as he does. He is a very honest and straightforward man in all of his dealings and I am blessed to have been welcomed here. It is an amazing atmosphere and a family POINT BLANK

Nabil Idris: I’ve been at Yamasaki for almost six years and I love each and every day that I’m on the mats. I couldn’t ask for better teammates who are friendly, caring, and passionate about seeing others succeed. Professor Neto is an outstanding instructor and goes above and beyond to provide the best atmosphere for his students.

CABRERA JIU JITSU ACADEMY: what do users think?

Jose Ramirez: Joined this gym in November of 2021 a week after moving to Maryland from out of state. Cesar Cabrera welcomed me into his gym with open arms. This is a very welcoming environment and gym culture that Cesar has carefully curated at this jiu jitsu academy. Although I’ve only been training with the people of this gym for a couple of months, I can confidently say that I feel like family here. The class sizes are the right size to ensure you get the attention you need while learning new techniques. I did my research before settling on this gym. Cesar is a Renzo Gracie black belt. His technique is solid and his instruction is clear. I cannot recommend this gym enough! This is a hidden gem you do not want to overlook. Drop in and try a class out so that you can experience how special this place is for yourself!

Henrik Stenval: Very welcoming environment filled with a great group of people. Everyone is dedicated to helping each other learn , train, and get better at the art. Also, Cesar is a Renzo Gracie black belt, so you can be assured you are attending a school with a very credible professor.

Devon Kelly: I used to wrestle in high school and wanted to get back into something. Started training with cesar and it has been awesome. The atmosphere and training partners are great and very welcoming no matter your skill level. I definitely recommend this place On top of all that cesar is a highly intelligent individual who provides good knowledge with showing techniques. Its a blessing to be able to learn from a loving and knowledgeable instructor.

Amanda M: Cabrera is a wonderful, safe and fun Jiu Jitsu academy that my seven year old daughter attends. We, as a family, cannot say enough about the welcoming environment and careful attention given to each student. In this environment, all students and parents are encouraged to look-out for each other, help each other, and to encourage and cheer for each student. We are so happy to be a part of this small welcoming community.

joe davila: I had no martial arts experience at all. I was a small wimpy kid with no confidence. As I began my journey coach Cesar helped build my confidence and was the catalyst for me to grow in my personal and physical life. I’m happy to be a part of the team

Ryan Ingram: I have trained under Professor Cesar Cabrera for many years now. With my job in Personal protection and my military Background I am very skeptical on Training. When I moved to the DC area I tried a few places and then I met Cesar. His Knowledge, method of teaching, professionalism, and skill set stood out head and shoulders above the others. I have really enjoyed training and sharpening my knowledge from the teachings of Cesar. I feel much more prepared and comfortable at work and in life. I would encourage everybody that is thinking of learning self defense visit Cesar. Your life will improve in many ways.

Xavier Agnelli: Highly recommend! I have been studying the martial arts since the age of four, and I can definitively say, as a life long martial artist, with black belts in other styles, that Cesar Cabrera, a first generation Renzo Gracie Jiu Jitsu black belt, will provide you some of the best, most practical and realistic Jiu Jitsu training you could ever hope to receive. It’s really difficult to find a good martial arts instructor, it’s even harder to find a great martial arts instructor. Well, look no further, Cabrera Jiu Jitsu, located in Hyatsville MD is your destination! Trust and put your martial arts journey and training in the hands of Cesar Cabrera, and you will not regret your decision. The journey of 1000 leagues begins with the first step, well, take my advice and take your first step into that Dojo. Caesar Cabrera is open and welcoming to new students, and he is always happy to accept people into his Dojo that have never spent a day training in their lives. This dojo is excellent for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students alike. He even has women’s specific Jiu Jitsu classes as well. You can train in Gi and No-Gi. Cesar Cabrera Jiu Jitsu offers discounts off of his already incredibly affordable tuition costs to First Responders and Military personal. Very rarely can you train directly with a first generation Renzo Gracie black belt. Don’t miss this rare opportunity!

Kelly Elizabeth: While I am just beginning my jiu jitsu journey, I can confidently say that Cesar Cabrera is a phenomenal coach. I’ve been learning from him for about 7 months, and have grown immensely. Cesar’s instruction provides safe and welcoming environment that is conducive to learning and growth- both on an individual and team basis. His attitude and teaching methods create a gym culture that pushes you to work hard while you enjoy class.

Emily Deering: 100% recommend Cabrera BJJ for all ages, body types, and exercise enthusiasts. I’ve been taking group classes with Cesar for about eight months and seen some pretty cool progress even in that short period of time. Cesar’s classes are fun, easy to follow, and never dull. I went from attending classes twice a week to five days a week just because I couldn’t get enough of it. My group classes are composed of all genders, races, ages, and body types. Cesar easily adapts moves to best fit his students and provides personal one-on-one instruction whenever possible. As a small female who frequently jogs in the darker hours, I definitely say Cesar’s training is a must. Cesar takes every opportunity to provide his female students (and anyone interested) in quick/easy self-defense techniques. I am genuinely more confident running on my own since I started training under Cesar. Cabrera BJJ itself is empowering and physically exhausting. As a runner by nature, I’ve seen my endurance, strength, and flexibility all benefit from this style of training/exercise. If you’re looking for a great way to stay in shape and have some fun, you’ve definitely just found your people.

M Richmond: Really great gym and instructor. Very knowledgable. Thanks coach!

Matt Bichay: Very fun group of guys and gals. Everyone welcomes you regardless of background. Little whining, tons of learning, and tons of rolling. Also, very wrestler friendly. Tons of classes and open mats with people of all experience levels.

Caio Terra Academy - Alexandria BJJ: what do users think?

Joseph Morgan: We enrolled our 5 year old son in BJJ. He is shy and not very confident after the last two years in Covid. The coaches are great with kids and helping them learn. I hope that bjj builds his confidence and helps him understand setting goals and accomplishments. They have a class for 5-7 year olds that helps a lot.

Annabel Daguiso: Mickaeden always looks forward being on a mat and how much he talks about what he learned in class. Will see him in every corner in the house practicing every moves that he learned and you can see how passionate and how eager he is to learn. Him being around this kind of environment is teaching him self defense, discipline and self control and also being around his fellow students, older brothers and sister that he looks up to is beyond a blessing ! Having a great teacher like Professor Vu and Professor Edgar, their dedication and patience with their students is unbelievable and outstanding- such great leaders. We are happy that we became part of this family, Thank you CTA Alexandria BJJ for allowing Mickaeden to spread his wings :)

Kenny McClusky: My home gym is down in Florida, but I had to come to the Northern Virginia area to visit family and saw Caio Terra Academy (CTA) online. CTA has an excellent facility, logically organized classes with a heavy focus on technique and drilling that made implementing forms just learned in rolling almost seamless (“Almost”because my inversions still need work😂). But they’ve got a wide range of skill set that make it worthwhile regardless of your time training. I introduced my brother to BJJ at CTA last week and he says he’ll definitely be back. OSS!

Peter Pope is Awesome!: CTA Alexandria BJJ is the best! We brought our son here to give him an extra boost during wrestling season (winter). After testing out free trial classes, we liked CTA most because of the welcoming environment - friendly and helpful staff, attentive and caring coaches, clean facility, fun yet challenging atmosphere, and overall a rewarding experience. Even though wrestling season has ended, our son continues to love taking the classes, and meeting / making new friends. Outside of class, CTA also hosts occasional fun Friday evening kids events with pizza and activities, allowing us parents to get a little breather, take advantage of a date night, etc. I would truly recommend CTA from a parent point of view; however, I know they also offer adult classes which I hear is super beneficial for your health and overall safety (especially from a self-defense perspective). Ultimately, CTA is awesome, five stars for sure!

Michael Hoang: I have been a student here for some time now and the atmosphere has always been excellent since day 1. The atmosphere is very clean, professional, and everybody treats one another with respect. Safety is especially emphasized. Classes are structured and planned so no time is wasted. Coach Vu and Coach Edgar emphasize this type of culture and it rubs off on everybody else. I think this type of environment is important for any establishment, especially a martial arts school. If you are looking to stay healthy and train martial arts, I would recommend this establishment.

Franny Black: CTA Alexandria BJJ has been a great experience. I’ve learned an incredible amount in just a few months. Vu and his team are great teachers and work so hard to make sure each student is progressing safely. The community is very friendly and welcoming. Plus it’s a lot of fun and a great workout.

Juan L.: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueI’ve trained at various gyms across several states and CTA BJJ is my favorite. Vu is a great instructor — dedicated, cares about his students. And while people here are serious about their training, the environment is welcoming and relaxed.

Virginia Martial Arts Dojo - Alexandria Karate Dojo: what do users think?

Isabella Fleenor: The Virginia Martial Arts Dojo is single handedly the best experience I have ever had when trying to find a new passion to get into shape, make new friends, and learn how to protect myself. Sensei Roberto and Denise are incredible teachers, they are patient, kind, and willing to work with you in order to meet your goals. I could not recommend this dojo enough! Not only have I found something to look forward to doing every week, but I have also found a new family to enjoy this with.

Oscar Joynes: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueAlexandria Dojo provides excellent environment and expertise to learn and experience martial arts. You not only get great instruction on the art of karate, but on its valued real world application. All the while, having a fun time learning and working hard. Many classes offered too! I highly recommend you see for yourself.

Matt Williams: I’ve been to other martial arts training in the area and this is by far the best experience I’ve had. The teaching style is laid back and the students help each other as a collective. The focus is on practical application and this is not your typical dojo experience. Everyone is friendly and Sensei sets the example. I have learned more here in a short time than I did in 2 years at another dojo. I highly recommend Alexandria Karate Dojo. Maybe you are older like me and this is something you’ve always wanted to try. This is the place to start. Don’t waste your time and money at other places in northern Virginia. Finally, I’ve had some issues with lower back pain and this training has helped. Due to the movements my lower back feels better than it has in years. Great teacher, great style, great environment. Yamasaki Academy: what do users think?

Thomas Tippit: Great staff. Very professional. Gave my son (age 6) a fantastic introduction to BJJ. He came out with more confidence and discipline!

Eric Rome: I have trained at a few schools. This is by far the best. High level instructors and great people. My 6 year old daughter just started. She loves Yamasaki. She loves the instructors and team mates. I drive 45 min to get here. Its worth every second of the drive PLUS I get to spend more time with my daughter.

Patrick Engracia: I loved training here. The community atmosphere is amazing. People are very nice and supportive. Coming from no background in BJJ, I felt welcomed and encouraged. Fernando and his instructors are world class. I highly recommend.

Sean Lynch: The best BJJ instruction in the area. Yamasaki has a great combination of both competitive and recreational practitioners. On top of that, they have a welcoming family friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend this gym.

Emily Kaput (kaputski): My partner and I trained here for some time in 2014-2017 (Muay Thai for me, BJJ for him). Muay Thai: great instruction. Coaches are great. Lots of seminars, and opportunities to train for fights (I never/will never do that...) That being said, it’s a great place to train if you’re looking for fights, AND if you’re NOT looking for a fight. And everyone plays nice, and if someone is going too hard, they’re very receptive to communication and they go easy (protect your tummies, ladies!). BJJ: from what I saw (and experienced in some classes), very good instruction when it’s led by a black or brown belt. Sometimes random crazy techniques were shown but my inability to understand them was very much linked to my lack of BJJ training. Family atmosphere- kids everywhere! Ever seen a mini samurai? Want to? They are everywhere at this dojo (so. Freaking. Cute.). The only con with this dojo (from our experience) is the inflexibility with the payment arrangements. I was spending one month in the states/one month out, and I would have preferred a more flexible payment arrangement. On a related note: when ending your membership (due to moving away etc or anything) make sure to let them know wayyyy in advance, because whomever is in charge of the membership payments is very stingy and WILL jip you for every last penny they can get you for. This happened to both of us (we ended memberships at different times, a year or so apart from one another). Overall, great experience (being cheap with the money is the bad taste left in the mouth).

Zhag M: I attended a few Muay Thai classes here while I was in the area and it was great. The instructors are attentive and helpful, the environment is friendly, and they cater to all skill levels. I highly recommend them!
