Krav Maga Capitol Hill: what do users think?

Kaelin Kovacik: KM Capitol Hill is great! I have never done Krav or any other form of marital art / self-defense training. I decided to sign up as a creative way to workout while also learning a useful skill. The classes have been great, the instructors are very knowledgeable and kind, and everyone is welcoming. It has also been an unexpected confidence boost. I’d recommend this studio to anyone interested in self-defense.

Jamie Morgan: This gym is amazing. For anyone familiar with Krav, the gym does a great job of combining technique and aerobic training. For anyone new to Krav, it’s a fantastic way to build on any fitness training you do and learn self defense. I’ve done all different types of workout classes for years, and this has taken my fitness to a different level. Plus the community is very welcoming! Highly recommend.

Randall Thomas: Love KM Capitol Hill! Welcoming environment for those who've never taken KM. The instructors are excellent - highly knowledgeable, take time to correct poor form, etc., and always supportive though consistently challenging students to go hard. Great facility as well.

N. Uhuru: Energetic and knowledgeable instructors. You will sweat!! Great location too with parking.

Maryeliz Point: Classes were great, I moved so it was no longer possible for me to attend. Here is the cancellation process: 1. Submit written notice of intent to cancel by mail to their headquarters. 2. Receive an email directing you to the secret login information required to access the cancellation forms of the website 3. Document you have a disability or have reached the end of your contract 4. Print, sign, and email that document back to them - noting that every time you email them their automatic bounce back is "We are currently experiencing a high volume of messages, and we appreciate your patience. Someone from our Member Services team will be in touch with you soon!" but they will ignore your follow up questions and not get back to you. 5. Be charged for two additional months while simultaneously receiving "Late payment" notices. When you respond to those you get the same "We're so busy messages" 6. Who knows - they still haven't stopped charging me and I started this process in September. Edit: As of January, and after a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, my additional charges were refunded and no new charges have come through.

Jenni Myung: Highly trained and skilled instructors, good mix of classes and levels, well-organized and run. Also, they have good swag.

Jeff Mount: The best Krav Maga training center in Washington, D.C.

Gabriella Myers: Great classes with that "everybody is welcome" atmosphere

Krav Maga Federation DC: what do users think?

John Kuna: I've got to say I was wholly disappointed in the quality of the class. I've been training Krav at other schools for about 4-5 years and only needed to observe the beginner class to see that there were issues with the techniques all the way down to stance and hand placement. The classes are an hour to an hour and a half long and 20-25 minutes of that is just a fitness/circuit training of calisthenics. To top it off, you spend zero time getting physical training with a partner to gain tactile experience. Overall a poor experience just watching it, let alone paying. I'll also add to the review; it's a huge red flag when a studio of any martial art refuses to allow you a trial class. Observing a class is not going to give relatively inexperienced students a chance to gauge the quality of instruction. And to respond to Brian's response below, I stayed the full length of the class and spoke to him about the efficacy of some of the techniques I watched. It seems to me that the motions taught are more akin to Karate (his more significant background) than they are for Krav. It's been two years and I still vividly remember that conversation and how certain I was after speaking to him that I'd never come back.
Response: Hi John, Thank you for coming to visit. I'm not sure what class you watched though... all of our classes are 1 hr and the second half is all self defense techniques with partner work. We do have a 10 minute warm up to get loose and condition. The warm up can extend if it includes striking. Perhaps if you had stayed for the whole class we could have discussed stance and hand placement, instead of just having your thoughts posted here. Best, Brian

John Q: I have practiced here for 2 years. The Federation has a great reputation and a depth of experiance and knowledge that becomes a valued resource once you pass simple strikes and start learning more complicated strategies. Instruction is strict, concise, and well documented with training guides. Class is full contact with 17oz gloves, and mouth guards. We are encouraged to not stop the attack, that it is our sparring partners responsibility to block the attack and move off the line. In this way we get a realistic training and develops situational awareness.
Response: Time flies “John”. 14oz. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hussein Medhat: After my first class I had doubts about whether I should learn Krav Maga under Brian or should I return to Nova MMA where I took three classes in the past. In Nova MMA, I got to actually hit and learn combinations right away. As for Krav Maga Federation, you won't get to this until you pass your beginner test to the yellow belt. That being said, I do not regret sticking to KMF and not learning under a different instructor. After a few classes you actually realize that learning combinations and hitting stuff might not be the best idea because your form is awful and needs some serious work. Our classes are usually small, so Brian will give you a lot of attention. Even if you are standing in the back, Brian will see you and pick on you until you get the form right. Now, speaking about Brian. He is really patient with us. He will ask us after showing a new move or re-showing us a new move, if we have any question. If we do, he will answer the question regardless of how repetitive the question is or how ridiculous it might be. I haven't done any martial arts since I was a child and I didn't think I'd do again because I hated every instructor I had when I was a kid. That's different with Brian. However, Brian is a bit strict. He will not allow people to practice if they show up after hours. Keep that in mind when you are signing up for classes. If you are not sure you can make the times then talk with Brian or figure out a way to show up on time. Most of the class usually shows up fifteen minutes early to warm up and stretch and sometimes one will go over a move with Brian. I would definitely recommend KMF for anyone who is looking to learn Krav Maga.

Eddie Lee: Great instructor. Cares about his students.

N-Flux: what do users think?

Becca Andersen: I had no prior experience with self defense or any martial art and my boyfriend bought me the Women and Femme self defense intensive course for this weekend. It was AMAZING, so inclusive of all experiences and fitness levels, talked about real world applications and scenarios and gave us a safe space to practice those scenarios and key moves to protect us. There were no gimmicks, just each person realizing their own strength and ability and personal strategy. The instructors were kind, inclusive, supportive, and I will definitely be returning for more classes. Thank you!!! [people, buy course passes for your partner, for yourself, for your family... they'll love it!!]

Katherine Daw: I went to self defense for women and femmes with Colleen! Amazing course! Colleen has designed the curriculum with both practicality and thoughtfulness in mind. She made sure all of us felt safe, cared for, and heard throughout the experience, even as we were tackling difficult topics and potentially triggering exercises and drills. She and the folks helping out were very knowledgeable and gave great pointers and individual attention to everyone in the class. I’ve come out of the weekend very sore, but feeling empowered and much more confident in my ability to defend myself in an emergency. This class has also inspired me to continue training in martial arts so that I continue to hone my self defense skills. Truly can’t recommend this highly enough.

Sean Leonard: I was a complete beginner to martial arts classes, and N-Flux was a fantastic, welcoming environment. There was a broad range of skill levels – from completely new people to seasoned professionals. Would highly recommend for someone looking for a place with a good sense of community, wide range of classes, or even a good open gym environment.

Leah Wilson-Lyons: I went to self defense for femmes with Colleen and had the BEST time. A welcoming gym environment for women that you won’t find at other places. I feel strong and empowered and lucky to have taken the self defense course. Every woman in DC should take this course!! It is so worth every penny. Colleen goes above and beyond to help you outside of class and to get to know you personally. The environment is very supportive and helped with my anxiety going in. Great community at that gym. I will be back!

Alexis Barton: I highly recommend the Guerrera workshop and Colleen that I took with N-Flux. I took the workshop with my 12 year old daughter and we both had an incredible experience - both with Colleen and the other instructors and with the group of women in the workshop with us. We were a mix of women of different ages, sizes, life-experience, and abilities but we all felt included and comfortable - which for practicing something like this is so important. Colleen made every technique and strategy accessible and straightforward but we still learned so much. Thank you!

Andrea Fort: I took the Guerrera self-defense class out of pure curiosity and I LOVED IT! This was just the type of physical / mental challenge I was looking for and I mean that it wasn't difficult, just something that felt really great to achieve! Colleen, the lead instructor, is a powerhouse and her energy is contagious! I also appreciated the wholesome guidance from all 3 other instructors, ever watchful about our technique and form... encouraging us along the way. It was also amazing to bond with other women and femmes over such a particular and vulnerable practice. I'm so glad to have met all of them, THIS IS a safe space! Thank you Colleen, Sarah, Tahira, Riley, you all make such a great and diverse team! I highly recommend this experience to ANYONE. Go for it!

Roger Routh: Went to N-Flux while I was in DC visiting my daughter. She's been going for over a year and speaks highly of it. I can see why. It was a GREAT workout. Tremendous camaraderie between the attendees and between the attendees and Chris the owner. I highly recommend it.

Kay Tang: Colleen and her team of instruction assistants are amazing. They truly create a great space for females to voice, share, and learn the everyday challenge to their safety. I learned a lot!

Caroline Routh: The happiest I've been in a long time! Working out here provides me with an amazing community of peers who aim to uplift and support each other, and the staff instruction is unmatched anywhere in the city. As a beginner I have never felt overwhelmed or intimidated. I cannot recommend N-Flux highly enough!

Akhilesh Pillalamarri: N-Flux is so great! Due to joining N-Flux, I developed, for the first time in my life, an interest in fitness and exercise because N-Flux showed me the path of holistic mind-body thinking and helped me foster a goal of improvement. I initially joined just to stay fit on a weekly basis, but now I also want to attain certain fitness goals and push myself more. One of the main reasons for this is the supportive and personalized atmosphere that keeps one coming back and that everyone who goes to N-Flux soaks in. My favorite classes are the mace training and boxing, but I recommend everything, and there's something for everyone of every level. The people are great, and of course, a special thanks to Chris and Colleen, who have made N-Flux what it is today. Highly recommended!

Krav Maga CDK: what do users think?

Claudia Jaldin: Nothing but good things to say about this place. I took my 13 y.o. to a few different places close to my home and I wasn't convinced with any. Most have mixed age groups with majority of the students in their mid 30's and up making it hard for my very shy 13 y.o. to feel comfortable. After months of looking for a good place for my kid to learn self-defense I finally decided to try CDK. I was a bit hesitant at first due to the distance from my home (mainly during rush hour) but I have to say this place is totally worth the drive. After the first intro class we knew this was it. They actually have a teens only class so all the students were around the same age. The energy and the enthusiasm in the room was contagious. After 20 minutes the kids looked like they had been working out for hours. The warm up was intense and the class was so much better than I expected. I definitely would recommend this place.
Response: We really appreciate your review and we are so glad your child had a great experience. We will continue to do everything we can to make sure you and or your teen receives the best instruction available.

Joanna Thomas: CDK is awesome! The staff and instructors are amazing. DJ the owner is very personable and always sits down and has a chat with every new person to get to know them & understand their goals. The classes are very inclusive and diverse. It has been great for my fitness & my confidence!
Response: HI Joanna. We really appreciate your 5 star rating. We will continue to give our 100% to giving the best training available.

Blvck Papi: Me being a part of this gym has greatly improved my life, not only physically, but mentally as well. Having a means to alleviate stress, in addition to knowing how to defend yourself in times that seem to get a bit more hectic everyday, means significantly more than just exercising. DJ and the rest of the staff at CDK are accommodating, patient, diligent, thorough, and dedicated to making your training experience as relatable and realist as possible. Confidence During Kaos. When times get hard, we go harder.
Response: We really appreciate your 5 star review. We will continue to do all that we can to bring the best instruction and training possible. Thank you for in trusting us.

Greg Schoenebeck: I am a veteran and for many years after leaving service I have still struggled to fill the emotional void... the loss of that esprit de corps... of individuals coming together to become a team... a family (regardless of color or creed), united in cause and belief. I don't like Saturday birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese...I missed being pushed to (what I thought was) physically and mentally to my limits, only to find I had more to give. I missed leadership who instilled a commitment to excellence. I guess you could say I coped through the years with addressing that emotional void with hobbies... My wife's not a huge fan of my hobbies... ;) I suck at wood work. My kids laugh at my "handyman" skills and I don't blame them. So now I feel myself more or less relegated to an equipment manager and driver for my kid's various hockey events. It wasn't until my wife pushed me to start doing something for me (and not kids' stuff) that I started to reclaim that dormant feeling I held inside. I discovered CDK and it reinvigorated my soul and reclaimed my identity. If church is for the soul, than CDK is for the mind & body. DJ is a master of his art and demands perfection. He is my drill instructor issuing commands. With each pushup, knee, and punch I can feel myself getting quicker and becoming more fluid and he demands the techniques are done properly to give you the proper foundation to build upon. Erica is a bulldog, and I mean that with love. Quick and tenacious, she just flat out brings energy that makes you better with each class. She's the epitome of why Krav can be done effectively, regardless of age or gender. David brings reality to what the art is. Krav is survival. It's not pretty, but it's a life skill that will bring you home safely to your family or bring your family out of harm's way. He ensures we go slow to develop that muscle memory such that we in turn will be masters of our own art. To handle stressful situations on the street. In closing, CDK is an extension of my military family and former life. I recommend to any Vet out there who is struggling to find or reclaim that feeling (driven into us since day 1 of boot camp), please give this a try. Even if you are not a Vet and have that drive, that inner warrior, who wants to be pushed past your current limits to new heights, do it. There's others out there and then there's the CDK way.
Response: Wow, thanks Greg. It really warms our hearts to hear your story. We appreciate your 5 star review but more importantly we appreciate your service to this country. Let's keep training, keep moving forward and keep reaching for those new heights.

Brandon Bell: Been going for 8 months! My best take-away is they challenge you while wanting you to succeed. All ages and body types are welcome. Anyone can flexibly practice the moves---they focus on principles and practice---you do not need to be fit like Bruce Lee! Classes are in groups. But the trainers rotate almost each time so I always learn something new and get an unexpected workout. The CDK team is always responsive by phone alongside emails blasts, so we always have proactive support. Gym is included as a big bonus.
Response: Thanks for great review Brandon. We will continue to do our best to push you towards your UNLIMITED potential.

yula kapetanakos: I started my training in the CDK studio about a year and a half ago. It's been an amazing experience from every perspective. The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and all around excellent people. They challenge us to excel while also prioritizing safety and respect for ourselves and each other. DJ is a pro in his craft and an exceptional instructor. He is right there training with the rest of us, leading by example. I often travel to remote and sometimes dangerous locations which is why I wanted to be versed in self-defense. This is the best shape I've ever been in and I feel 100 times more confident to defend myself. In the process, I also became part of a fantastic community.
Response: Thanks Yula! We have enjoyed training with you and we look forward to helping and watching you grow more and more.

V Crowers: I cannot say enough about CDK. It is the best thing that I have done for myself. I work in an inner city ER and feel much more prepared to defend myself, also in the best shape of my life. I was nervous about starting because I never had any experience in fighting/martial arts and barely knew how to throw a punch. The instructors and the other students are supportive. Plus there is gym access and validated garage parking for $1.

Leah Van Sciver: I love Krav Maga CDK! I haven’t been to a martial arts class in ten years, and the instructors have been whipping me back into shape! They ensure every movement is correct, even those during the warm up! The atmosphere is friendly yet professional, they offer free full access to the gym, and what’s best is you can attend as many classes as you want throughout the week and on Saturdays. I definitely recommend this place to anyone wishing to learn self defense and/or to get back into the game!

Eileen McNamara: Krav Maga CDK provides a terrific environment to learn realistic self-defense. All of the CDK instructors are very knowledgeable, give clear personalized advice, and make training fun! Classes (in person and virtual) are an excellent physical and mental workout. The high quality training and supportive community make Krav Maga CDK an ideal self-defense program!

Kate Clothier: Highly recommend!! I joined CDK about a year ago. I remember walking into my first class not knowing anyone and having absolutely zero self-defense experience. I was nervous but D.J. took the new students aside and showed us some basic moves we’d need for class and made us all feel at ease. I was sold after that first class. Everyone was so supportive and helpful (instructors and classmates) and the amount you learn each class is insane. I now go at least twice a week and feel more confident/safer when I am out. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that I am capable of protecting myself, it's quite liberating. If you have any interest in learning about Krav Maga I cannot recommend CDK enough. The facility is nice, the instructors top notch, and the fellow students are great. It's a wonderful community of people working together to better themselves. As long as you show up willing to learn and listen to the instructors, (they know their stuff and are pretty badass) you will absolutely learn a lot and push yourself to a higher level. Come join our CDK family!
