Driss Bernoussi: I took the Spanish evening group class for beginners and it was an amazing experience. This is much different than learning a language in high school or college, which was much more boring for me. At ICLS, they get you speaking Spanish from the beginning, and its highly interactive style helps you become comfortable with your classmates. My teacher, Astrid, was fantastic. Our class became so close that by the end we went out for a dinner on our last class and practiced ordering in Spanish. I highly recommend to any language learner in the DC area that is looking to take a class after work. It meets twice a week so it is perfectly manageable for my busy schedule.

Jane Powers: Finding Carmie to help me prepare for a speech was truly a gift. I felt that she took me under her wing, worked with me to overcome my anxiety and just simply was not going to let me fail. In addition to being charming, funny and a delight to work with, Carmie was extremely patient, endlessly positive, sharing lots of practical tips and advice. We practiced together, over and over, until I finally felt comfortable. Linh Truong: Mentora College is totally the best place in DC to study ESL. Tuition is better than other ESL schools in the area and during COVID, they provide student housing to students and even gave a discount so everyone can afford it and continue attending classes online from the dorm. The teachers and administration clearly care about their students, and they are attentive and really listen if there is any issues.

Andrew Siguler: Since 2011, I have had many different Chinese teachers both in high school and undergrad, but I have been really impressed with the depth and flexibility of CLA. If you have a solid background in Mandarin but want to improve or learn material not necessarily covered in traditional textbooks, I would highly recommend using them. I have been one-on-one with Barbara Wen twice a week over Zoom for the last month and plan to continue using CLA into the spring.
Kirsten An: I took the first section of the beginning/elementary course with Ysabella, and it was an amazing learning experience! The teachers at CLA are wonderful and are incredibly patient and kind during the learning process, while incorporating fun knowledge throughout the course. The beginning course is a great way to build a strong foundation in the Chinese language, and I am looking forward to continuing the learning journey with future classes!
Diana E.: I started with CLA in March of 2021 through September 2021 and the experience in learning Chinese Mandarin was wonderful. My class was via Zoom. Barbara Wen was my teacher and she was able to hear each student’s tone and correct us. Taught us about beautiful traditions or quick facts about China. This makes a difference in learning, it allows you to get immersed in the language. We had homework which would consist of written or speaking. CLA also created a club via Zoom to get all students and teachers to meet each other and practice speaking. I definitely feel more comfortable to speak with native person.
Fabio Niyonkuru: I attended the CLA16 crash course over the summer and the teacher and school exceeded my expectations! They were very professional but also focused on each student to make sure everyone was learning around the same rate. CLA also offers a lot of extra practice outside of class to improve your reading and writing which helps a lot for new people. Highly recommend!
Christine Hackman: I enjoyed the "Tourist" four-week four-hours-per-week crash course very much: the class was very challenging (plus only three students, so no hiding!) but was conducted in clear, organized manner (e.g., starting/ending promptly). Our instructor, Shelly Li, explained the material in a clear, logical manner with lots of in-class practice and drilling for maximum assimilation. She also emailed homework promptly. I highly recommend Ms. Li as an instructor and the class as a way to jump-start yourself in this challenging language.

Christina U: I just completed a private Arabic course with DC Internationals MESALI instructors Nadia and Abdou. It was excellent! I really liked how the instructors worked with me to find course materials that interested me. I felt much more confident about speaking in Arabic after this class.
David Bartley: I required to maintain proficiency in a language for my work and MESALI is an excellent school to maintain and improve language skills. I took two classes at MESALI over a two year time period and I was able to improve my listening and reading comprehension significantly. I started the first class at a level below meeting standards for my occupation and by the time I finished the second course, I was far exceeding requirements. The school offered various, flexible class options, which was helpful in working around my work and family schedule, and my teacher was excellent. I would highly recommend this school.

As a student in the beginner Arabic class, I was impressed when my classmates and I were able to read words in script within a few classes while learning a significant amount of vocabulary and constructing sentences at a rapid pace. Jackson Wright: During my time studying Modern Standard Arabic at DC Internationals MESALI, I have learned so much, in such a short amount of time. Starting from scratch, I participated in the 120 hour Summer Critical Languages Institute, and in another 120 hour course during the Fall semester because I saw so much concrete tangible results. In comparison to other language classes I have participated in, MESALI is unique, in that, its professors provide different teaching methods that make it easier for the student to learn. For example, professors would provide memory tools and reveal patterns that would make it easier for the student to apply while learning the language. At MESALI, the professors are knowledgeable, helpful, and personable. At no time have I felt that the training was sub-par. I strongly recommend MESALI for any person who is looking to learn a new language, or enhance a language they currently possess as the professors are flexible and accommodating at all levels. With the help of MESALI, I feel confident in the training I am receiving that I will be able to use it as I progress in my career.
Jawwad Ahmad: I had the pleasure of taking the Arabic 1 Standard course with Mesali. I was very hesitant to sign up and commit to a language course on top of my busy work and personal schedule, but am very glad that I did. The instructor was pleasant, knowledgeable, and surprisingly funny! The small class size and engaging teaching style helped keep everyone focused. It gets pretty tiring to sit through a class after working from 9-5, but these classes were a great time. Time and money well spent!

Bonnie Beavers: Bassima was my teacher for my class (level 104.A.2), which for me was the first French classroom experience since university days 40 years ago. I enjoyed it enormously and will sign up again. We spoke French the entire time, and the materials were very helpful & well-organized. French immersion schools abroad know about Alliance and respect their teaching.
JC Kollmorgen: Membership and the cost of classes are pretty steep altogether. However, the quality of teaching is good. Much better than taking a class at USA Graduate School, for examples. Their library is also fantastic. You can borrow books, DVDs, and audio. I only wish they had more higher level class offerings at their Penn Quarter location as it would be more convenient for me.
Charlotte Dadzie: I think the class I took helped me improve my language skills a little, I did not like the fact that the teacher I had did not say anything when students were laughed at when they made a mistake. I mean We learn together, we shouldn’t laugh at people when they make a mistake, we should instead help them.

Helena Tang: I have been taking classes at the Italian Language Program for over 7 years and have had a wonderful experience. The Program is well-run, the facilities are nice, and the atmosphere is friendly. What I appreciate most is my teacher, Cristiana Fabiani, with whom I have had classes for the entire 7+ years, starting from the Beginning level (I literally started with zero knowledge of Italian) to now where we are reading books (including one by an Italian Nobel Prize winner). Cristiana is a great teacher; she is very patient and encouraging, and has the best classroom management skills. She tries to ensure that everyone in the class has a chance to speak, and encourages those who are reticent to speak up. Thanks to Cristiana, not only am I reading Italian literature (it is still a lot of work for me!) but I have gained enough listening comprehension and speaking skills that I feel I can function in Italian (with mistakes and gaps in vocabulary, of course). All in all, the Italian Language Program has really worked well for me and I fully recommend it!

Sarah Parker: My 3 year old son started at District Speech about 18 months ago to address his language delay. Both of the therapists he worked with, first Anna Carr and then Lee Morra, were excellent. Once he started catching up on language, Lee began addressing his speech delay. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave me great tips and tools to practice with my son at home. My son absolutely loved going to every biweekly session he had with both Anna and Lee, and they both made it a very play-based approach. I was so proud and grateful when his latest assessment showed that he is now hitting all his age appropriate milestones for both speech and language! I also want to call out Katie Nelson, the Operations Manager, who does an amazing job managing all the billing and scheduling. She was always extremely helpful and responsive to all my billing questions and was very responsive and detail-oriented. Thank you District Speech!
Teresa Teresa: Lee Morra at District Speech and Language is a wonderful and effective speech therapist. He gave me the tools, guidance, and encouragement to speak better. Lee taught me speech exercises so I can practice saying and using words and phrases I commonly use. He taught me techniques to organize my thoughts and talking points for meetings and conversations. He taught me that even though I have a cognitive impairment and problems with memory loss, I can speak coherently. Once I started using these techniques, I started getting better results in meetings, with customer service, and at appointments! The speech improvements I have made using the tools and techniques Lee gave me have given me the confidence to start and join conversations again! Now, I am not as worried about forgetting what I am talking about mid-sentence as I was before speech therapy. The real proof of speech progress came when my primary care physician told me I was more organized, more to the point, and better spoken than I have been in almost a year. I replied "speech therapy!" My doctor and I are happy I have access to resources such as District Speech and Language and Lee to help me. Thank you , Lee!
Evelyn Taylor: I went to district speech for transgender voice therapy and district speech set me up with my instructor Sophie Edwards. I had a great time learning from Sophie and feel more confident and knowledgeable in speaking with a more feminine voice. I would recommend her to any trans girl looking to feminize their voice.
Eva Herrada: I would really recommend Sophie Edwards at district speech for anyone trying to feminize their voice. She was a massive help to me and after a few sessions I had results that I was very happy with. She gave me exercises that really helped with my goals for my voice and gave me feedback that made it much easier to learn. I had tried other resources but having someone giving me feedback on what I was doing right and wrong made a huge difference.

Claire Rutledge: Sophie was very good at helping me gain control of my voice. Our lessons were organic but always honed in on what I needed to work on. In a few short classes I finally gained access to the voice that felt natural to me and allowed me to express myself fully.

John Wood: As a current student I can say I am a huge fan of ISL for many reasons. I have been taking Portuguese there online with a fantastic professor and support staff and am having a lot of fun learning the language. When I visited Brazil my inlaws / family / friends all were asking me how I had improved so much recently and I told them about my classes at ISL. They told me I must have a good teacher and I said I definitely do. Other benefits include the flexibility of online classes and the the very affordable cost. Overall I am extremely happy with ISL and am excited I am finally on my way to becoming bilingual.
