Fort Washington United: what do users think?

Esha: This is my son's first year attending FWU and I couldn't be more excited and blessed for my son to work with such a professional and polite staff. My son's tutor Ms. Nicole has worked tirelessly to make sure he not only stays on task for his grade level goals but that he also exceeds them.🙌🏽 My son also has some amazing coaches that are not only helping to teach him the various skills and techniques associated with MMA but they also teach him discipline, respect, and teamwork.😉 FWU has mastered the recipe for developing successful students and I'm glad my son is one of them.😊

Willie Hicks: Hope this review helps anyone on the fence……..our son is an energetic (kid has a lithium Ion Tesla battery), rambunctious, 100% boy. We love him to pieces but noticed his weight was slowly creeping up, his attention span, and listening skills weren’t where we wanted them to be. We wanted to be proactive and get him into a disciplined environment while also increasing his physical activity. We researched different Martial Arts Academy’s in the Fort Washington area and came across Fort Washington United. We initially called in January 2021 and spoke with Nicole. Within a week we decided to bring our son in for a trial class. The atmosphere and environment was very welcoming. The staff stopped what they were doing to invite us in, take us on a tour, and answer the zillion questions we had. Our son immediately fell in love with the class and was a participant 4-5 times a week in the evenings and on Saturday’s. Fast forward to the Spring and we were prompted with the decision to do the traditional Summer Camp for our son, or enroll him in the Summer Program offered at Fort Washington United. We are so glad we went with FWU. Our son (who turned 6 in May) has progressed immensely in the areas of reading, problem solving, communication, public speaking, water safety (swimming), and leadership. The lessons and principles instilled by the staff has turned our son into a responsible, respectful natural leader who can also throw a hell of a punch and follow with a roundhouse kick, but will also help an old lady across the street……..AWESOME STAFF! AWESOME MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM! Can’t say enough great things……wish I could give them 10 STARS!

Kisha DeSandies Lester: Earlier this spring, I was looking for a martial arts academy for my five year old son, who was about to start kindergarten. My husband and I wanted to help him get used to being about other kids, since he had been in quarantine for over a year with little to no other time to play with kids his age. We also wanted to instill confidence, respect and self-control and believe that mixed martial arts is a good way to achieve that. I had planned on starting our son in a program in the fall, but as I looked for summer camp programs, I discovered Fort Washington United (FWU). Initially, we wanted to make sure that our son could keep up with the summer program and the evening classes. The staff was great is working with us and our son to assess his ability and we were able to register him for 5-6 weeks of summer camp and the daily martial arts classes. Our son LOVES FWU! He enjoys the structure and working with the coaches and all of the moves that he learns each week. He also is making friends with the other students. Because our son doesn’t attend school nearby, we are not enrolled in the after school program, but we would if we could. Martial arts has given our son confidence and he’s excited to practice his moves at home to anyone who will watch! The summer camp was simply phenomenal! Our son loved the weekly themes, lessons and field trips they went on. The coaches taught the kids important values and taught them how to speak up, be respectful, be responsible, and be a good citizen of the academy. We also loved how the kids worked in teams, by age and presented their projects each week. We were blown away that our 5-year-old was doing PowerPoint presentations and building airplanes and coming up with business plans. There is also a wonderful education track during the summer camp week and after-school program to help keep your child learning at their grade level and beyond (if they are able to). This summer camp also prepared him for the social aspects of kindergarten (eating lunch, playing with others, transitions to different activities, keeping up with your personal items, etc.) I read a review about how this program may not be for younger kids. I would say that it would depend on the child. My son has thrived at FWU. He was one of the youngest kids in the summer program and he did great! He also is inspired and motivated by the older kids, and teens who help with the summer camp. I also think that a lot of our kids need to get a little real-world consequences for their actions when they don’t follow the rules. My son is motivated by that and the point system is an appropriate tool in the academy setting. He doesn’t like losing points because other kids on his team aren’t listening, so he tries to be a leader and example, which we like to see. Overall, I have and will continue to recommend FMU to parents. It’s a safe and nurturing place to have your kids. The staff (Steve, Nicole, Karen, Jason, Charles) are all upbeat and keep you informed on what’s going on. I love how Coaches Jason and Charles are with my son and all the kids. We love that Steve and Nicole are veterans and they have made the decision to pour into the lives of kids. Karen is always helpful, pleasant and supportive every time I see her. My husband and I have been really happy with the decision to enroll our son in this program.

Nat Geary: I've trained at UMAA since September 2018, and since then, my growth has been immense. If you're into challenging workouts, this place has you covered (I am down 40 lbs and keeping the weight off). If you're looking for fulfilling afterschool programs for children, this place is dedicated to both mental and physical success, with tutoring and homework support to go along with martial arts instruction. If you are interested in setting and achieving personal goals, I can personally attest that this gym has helped me reach new heights. I never saw myself winning a grappling tournament, but the coaches, staff, and teammates made that a reality. I cannot recommend this place enough . From ownership down to students, this place is all class. It is more than just a gym, it is a community hub.

Dawn Washington: I am the mom of a special needs child. I was very hesitant to put him in martial arts. I’m glad we did, best decision we ever made! Grappling and striking have boosted my sons self esteem. During summer camp, the group went on museum tours. Each week had a educational theme. They learned coding, finance principles and received points for each book they read over the summer. The points could be used for toys and games. Now that school has started, the focus is on homework. I worried the staff wouldn’t be one on one with my son for his studies so I didn’t bother sending his homework. Imagine my surprise when his teacher sent multiplication homework home and my son already knew it! He’d work with staff using Kahn academy. Great place, great staff!!!

Jazmin Simms: I highly recommend UMAA. My son Mason has attended the after school program for almost 2 years now and I could not be more thankful to the coaches and staff. Since attending, Mason has become a lot more confident, disciplined and an overall better student. The coaches and staff care a lot about the kids and always go the extra mile to help whether it’s with training or homework.

Steven Hoang: The United Martial Arts Academy has classes for the entire family! The classes are great for people of all ages that want to learn top rated self defense and get fit! The kids have a ton of fun during classes! I would recommend this gym to anyone again and again!

Charmicielle Goodine: This establishment does not know how to handle primary children. The punishment for a 5 year old should not be the same for a 12 year old. The point system that the children are on is very subjective. And thinking that a 5 year old should have the same responsibility as a 12 year is ridiculous. It is probably a great establishment for older students but not for younger children.

fairlane urbina: My son goes to UMAA to their after school program. The coach never misses a day to update us that my son got picked from school, in the van and when they’re in school. We celebrated my son’s 11th birthday at UMAA and the theme was Nerf Blast. The party was a “BLAST” all kids had a great time and the staffs did a “BLAST” job! I highly recommend this school. Not only they love what they do, but they care the well being of their students.

Jaquan Butler: United Martial Arts Academy is great environment to build a foundation for martial arts. With a diligent staff and wonderful community it is an excellent environment for learning, guaranteed to instill the calmness and confidence needed to succeed.

DC Aikido Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Akire Adams: For anybody looking to learn self defense and build a foundation in martial arts I think this would be a great place to start but you have to want it and actually put forth the effort and ask questions coming here definitely feels like I'm part of the family and the price per month is affordable so if you want to start and gain some personal confidence I definitely think you should join!

walter lewis: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueAll of the staff are very empowering and professional. I felt welcomed. The instructors are very patient and humble. I would highly recommend DC Aikido to anyone seeking to develop self confidence, patience, and self defense skills.

CST CST: Michael Sensei organized an amazing trip to Japan this year. We were 12 people that spent 8 days wonderful days training and sightseeing with members of our sister dojo in Naha and Okinawa city, in Japan. This was my second trip with DC Aikido, and let me tell you it was legendary! We had the best time ever, We immersed ourselves in the Japanese culture. We had the experience of sleeping in a typical Japanese bed. We enjoyed the most exotic foods, and most importantly, made wonderful friends! Hopefully, the Japanese group will come to visit DC next year. Can't wait to show them around town! Thank you Michael Sensei for organizing this epic trip!
Response: And Hilda, we all can't wait for you to come back to Japan a third time!! Your presence on the trip made it that much MORE special. Thank you for all you do!!

Gideon Culman: Nothing but high praise for DC Aikido! I joined the studio last summer for two reasons: to work up a sweat and to use aikido as a physical prism that casts new light on the conversations I conduct day-in, day-out for work as a life coach. From day 1 it has superseded my expectations in the following ways: Everybody is supportive. Anytime I have been stuck, somebody has been there to show me the way. The instructors are eager and attentive. The sparkle on the sheen of DC Aikido’s bright culture is its students, who patiently and respectfully help bring less advanced students to their next level. Every lesson is enlightening. Each class points to new ways I can better serve my clients. Whether we study balance, flexibility, striking or grabbing, not a single lesson goes by without offering up new insights. These insights translate immediately into more adroit and powerful conversations – and satisfied clients.

Rio's “mhall3D” Art 1: GREAT Dojo! I have been training for about a year at DC Aikido and I love it! The folks there are amazing! Veltri Sensei and his team provide a fun and friendly environment for kids and adults. I have gained so much than just learning Aikido. I have gained confidence, strength, and entire Dojo family that I value as my own family. I have found that in training he continually pushes his students to improve their game, both in examining the group as a whole and pinpointing the exact areas that each individual student needs to improve. The support I have received at the dojo has helped improve not only my Aikido and techniques, but my overall sense of self on the mat...my weaknesses and strengths (physical AND mental) are pointed out to me daily and corrected with patience and understanding. What's more, there has ALWAYS been someone of high rank or experience available to answer any question I might have at any given time. I can't say enough about how grateful I am to have met and trained with such an extraordinary man and group of people. Thank you DC Aikido!!!

Jonathan Lemmond: It has been almost two years since I started going to DC Aikido. I love it. I was nervous to start a martial art, but Sensei Michael Veltri, all of the instructors, and all of the students, make DC Aikido incredibly welcoming. I've befriended a great group of people, somehow now get along better with all of the other people in my life, and have gotten in great shape. Training at DC Aikido is tremendously fun.

Ronald Lloveras: I've been a member since August 2012 and I'm glad I took the time to visit/review/research all martial arts locations that are available in the DC area. I was very impressed by the dojo since I first stepped onto their mat. Everyone I met was friendly and very welcoming. After the two tutorial sessions with Charly, I knew that I was going to be a proud member of this dojo. The black belt instructors are great and the all the rest of the members are great as well. Unlike other places I've visited, I didn't feel intimidated by anyone at this dojo. Everyone wanted to help each other learn the techniques and the philosophy behind them. The dojo is clean and well kept. It is conveniently located across the Woodley Park metro and just a few miles by bike.

Jeannys Flamine NNEMNBENG (Jayjay86): I just came back from a trip to Japan that was organized by Michael Sensei . We spent (12 of us) 10 days in Okinawa during which we had the opportunity to receive teaching from Yamaguchi Sensei( Michael Sensei’s Sensei). It was not only a good opportunity for me to grow as an aikido practitioner but also to discover and deeply understand that the skills learned on the mats could be applied in each and every aspect of my life . The art itself, the people( my fellow classmate and of course our Japanese hosts) , the scenery , all contributed in way. They made this trip, my trip, a memorable experience. I tried my best to describe the emotions that I felt during this trip to Japan, but words won't be enough to convey the true meaning of what I experienced . It has to be lived. I hope you’ll be the next to go . I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed .
Response: AND, we are allll so glad you came Jeannys! Thank you for your dedication, commitment, and teamwork helping to make the trip such a great experience!

Christine Ju: We held our daughter's 7th birthday party at DC Aikido. Noah was wonderful to work with, and the price was very reasonable given what was included. They were very accommodating, and the kids seemed to have a great time. Thank you!

Shah Alom Khokon: Good for kids.

DC Self Defense Karate Assn.: what do users think?

Christina Sheraton: This place was a big let down. My two teenagers were not impressed by the instructor. 1st off the pics online are about 20 years old. So when you get there you're greeted by this older lady you weren't expecting. And that's the 2nd issue, the owner, Master Middleton, is in her 70's. It was like a senior citizen class. She said she teaches all the classes even though there is another instructor there who looks like he's in his 40's who we thought we were having class with. 3rd it was a red flag for me when I asked can we come and watch the regular classes and was told no. That's just suspicious to me. Any school that won't let you check out their classes, is a red flag.
Response: Our real students were shocked to hear ANY class at DCSDKA characterized as being like a senior citizen class. Nor is anyone told that they cannot watch our regular classes. We just encourage parents of young children to have their kids do a trial class rather than just watch, as some kids are intimidated by only watching. Trial classes are free--come and make your own judgement. Pics on our website are stock photos, not my past students. We have 5 instructors besides myself, but I am there for most classes. Also, I have not met a Christina Sheraton.

Gabriel Torres: I joined this school when I was about five years old I was a troubled kid in a difficult house hold. This place changed my life sensei Middleton is a saint. She teaches with love and passion. These negative reviews are appalling. This place teaches you self confidence and important lessons for life. Take a class and have fun learn skills and enjoy. Thank you sensei and sensei wolf id like to come visit the new dojo soon!
Response: Thank you Gabriel, and yes, love you lots! The passion is a blessing for me, and knowing y'all is my reward. Come visit us any time. Not much I can do about fake reviews--all from the same guy. But anyone can come and see for themselves. The new dojo has a beautiful wood floor and the upstairs gym is fully padded.

Aaron Williams: My son began his path here two years ago. I have to say, this has been a fantastic experience for us both. He looks forward to his training and practices constantly at home. Thank you Master Middleton for give this great learning environment for all people young and old.
Response: Once someone learns the discipline to practice on his own, he can apply that to school and whatever he takes on into adulthood, so I appreciate hearing this. I also love how courteous he is. Thanks!

nathan sarpal (PieEye): The teacher is nice and funny and I am able to learn a lot from her! It's definitely worth the price down to the last cent! They offer side programs that could help you exceed in the classes!
Response: Nathan, yes, and you certainly have the attitude and the drive to qualify for the Leadership or Black Belt Training programs. I'll discuss it with your Dad!

Stephania Gomez: DCSDKA has been the best investment for my son! They allow parents to participate alongside their children for the first few months to ensure the child adapts well. I was pleasantly surprised to know that my son was not only learning new technical skills, but was also being taught values and life lessons. The staff/instructions are very friendly, professional, organized, and thorough. I had tried two other martial arts organizations for my son but they always lacked structure and DCSDKA definitely has that! As far as the location I have lived in Brightwood for 25 years and was not pleased to see it being described as “ghetto”. The negative comments are simply not true. There is a fire station on the same block, plenty of parking. DC is a city where you will find a mix of businesses.I have never felt unsafe. Highly recommend!!
Response: Thanks Stephania! And yes all the stuff on the 1 star "reviews" are totally made up by a disgruntled ex-employee, but one cannot take those down, even though a court case showed those email addresses to be fake!

J. H.: Grandmaster Carol Middleton is an amazing martial arts and self-defense instructor. Her techniques are precise and expertly tailored to each situation a person might actually encounter in the real world. She and her staff also are excellent at communicating ways to improve to students, both young and old. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming (and clean)! We particularly love the way they teach children valuable life skills: how to be a good friend, how to be safe, and how to improve self-confidence and self-esteem. The karate lessons are just the icing on the cake. We highly recommend DC Karate and Self-defense for both kids and adults who want to improve discipline, defense and/or fitness. Having taught her own Martial Arts school for more than 45 years, she is incredibly competent and experienced. We love her values that are instilled in the school's motto of "discipline, respect and positive expectancy." I wouldn't trust any other dojo with my family's training.
Response: Aw, shucks. And I must say, the best part of teaching is having great students like you and yours!

Brian Frank: This has been one of the best investments in my daughters life and well-being. The courses taught not only self defense and karate, but how to raise a child to be strong, safe and confident. I take the classes alongside my daughter and plan to continue through the rest of my life. It has provided an invaluable bonding between me and my child. Don't believe the bad reviews. I was really surprised at some of them and can comment on a few. Classes are diverse, professional and well worth the money. There was never a time when a teacher didn't show up. Even when one was late, there are 2 other instructors or the Sensei to conduct the class. Sensei (Carol Middleton) is invested in every student and sits down with them to explain the course and how much it costs. I've never in my entire time there felt unsafe in the neighborhood and I do not live far from the dojo. This is a fantastic school and I wish I could give more stars. If you are interested, check it out because the first class or two are free.
Response: Thanks Brian. The bad reviews are from a guy I fired for stealing who promised then to put us out of business by making fake reviews that were real bad. None of it is true! Sensei

Justin Hunt: Great experience both for myself and for my family. We started with my son taking classes in the family class and I enjoyed it so much I later started the adult class. I have found it to be both a good workout and a challenging activity that I am improving at thanks to the instructors encouragement and ability to offer useful feedback. I also love the positivity of instruction and the life lessons Sensei does as part of the kids class, teaching self-respect, confidence and ways to deal with the challenges our kids face in school and the world.
Response: Thanks, Justin. We sure miss you guys but hope you are loving Australia!

itsfairgame: I'm very glad her studio has moved to Brightwood, NW . Its a good place to learn basics. For adults there are more appropriate instructors available I feel. I think signing a promissory note in advance for six month fees is a distraction. In my case I ended paying for no lessons because the class schedule change did not fit my new work schedule, so I think I was out 800.00. Think it through before joining.
Response: Promissory note? My students who lost their jobs got up to a year free!

Sarah Armstrong: I made multiple attempts to speak with someone over the phone, leaving several messages, all of which went unanswered. When I finally spoke with someone, I believe the owner, she was incredibly rude, she would not provide any information about the program cost structure. She also said they would NOT honor my Groupon offer which was purchased for karate lessons and is still valid. When I showed up for my appointment, it was in a house. Which is rather odd. I met with Carol who told me she runs the school. She still would not provide cost information, but considering I had my Groupon offer, I did not care. I already spent the money and at this stage simply wanted to get the lessons and be done with it. When I showed up for the class, the teacher never showed up. No one called me, and I was left waiting with several other students. When I asked them about this, they mentioned this happens frequently, either Carol is late or the other instructor, Sarah, doesn't show up at all. When I asked why, they said Carol is forgetful and Sarah doesn't care. I have no idea why anyone would pay for this type of service. I definitely will not return and have told my friends about this horrible experience.
Response: Hi Sarah, I finally discovered that my assistant was not getting the phone messages. I'm not sure who you eventually talked to, but the Intro appointments are always at the dojo, and although I wanted that Groupon taken down months ago, when it wasn't, I did honor it. I consider myself late if I am not 5 minutes early, and that has happened, but only once did the teacher not make it. It certainly is not the norm If that was the time you came, then I do apologize.

Washington DC Shotokan Karate Club Inc: what do users think?

Peter Sisler: This is a great community of experienced karate enthusiasts. Good mix of senior belts to beginners. I found some of the best Shotokan instructors in the region here at half the cost of any other martial arts instruction.

Raleigh Marshall (Novae): This club is well-established (something over 20 years) and teaches traditional Shotokan karate with highly competent instruction and extremely reasonable training fees (they are a not-for profit). The student community is close-knit and very diverse so it's a great way to meet new friends as well!

V V: Positive: Professionalism, Quality, ValueThis is a great and welcoming community of karate players. It has a good mix of all levels. Instructors are very knowledable and care about the students and their development. The kids and adults classes are excellent. I would definitely recommended it for beginners and those with karate experience.

Kei Agajani: Super authentic, they put a lot of work into teaching it correctly.

Northeast Taekwondo: what do users think?

Jeff Hale: Excellent instructors! My on has been going to Tae Kwon Do here for maybe 4 years. It's a great community. Very welcoming of new folks.

Shani Dhani: This school is absolutely amazing. In the beginning, honestly, I had my doubts but I'm impressed I must say. They have lived up to the 5 stars plus. I've noticed my kid is much calmer and a bit more focused. Whereas he was once a Very active and off task kid. Amazing and All worth it.

Garner Marshall: I bring all of my children to learn Tae Kwon DO at this location. The instruction is phenomenal. They are very strict, sort of para-military. They instill values into the students. The instructors are very sincere. Great location. Worth every penny.

Julius Alston: While studying and practicing Tae Kwon Do under the tutelage of Master O'Kelly I was able to obtain my Black belt. The training as well as the experience I received has become an integral part of my character. I am would recommend the school to anyone . Through the journey of becoming a black belt I became a more confident in all my affairs. By practicing the 5 tenets of Tae Kwon Do I am able to navigate a more serene life. Thanks !

Anthony Lin: Very good instructors in my opinion! Also, sometimes games of dodge ball needed.

M B Delissaint: Awesome place to learn. They do well in balancing between strict regimenand and patience with young kids.

Zora Thompson: i'm a black belt, and I love it! I go twice a week!

Claudia Escobar: Great teachers and methods. Kids just loose to go and learn new techniques!

Capital Kyokushinkaikan DC Dojo: what do users think?

Sogyel Lhungay: I found Capital Kyokushin-kan about a year ago. I had just moved to DC and didn't know a lot of people in town. While I was simply looking for a dojo where I could get fit again, what I found here was much more than that - I found a warm, welcoming, tightknit community of Karatekas (karate practitioners) who are passionate about pushing each other to be better and stronger. All this wouldn't be possible without Sensei Nick Toma, who is one of the best karate teachers I've encountered in my 16+ years of martial arts practice. I highly recommend this Dojo for both beginners and people who are already familiar with full contact (Kyokushin-style) Karate. Logistical note: Classes are usually 5:30pm to 8pm on Monday/Friday and 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday. Parking is usually available in the community center lot, but sometimes you need to find street parking (it's always been free for me). The class takes place in the smaller gym (the first door to the right as you enter the community center). You don't need any special equipment if you're just trying out the class but eventually you'll need a gi and maybe shin pads and gloves if you're interested in sparring. Also, it's better to come 10-15 minutes early to start stretching and prep for class, especially if it's your first class.

Youssef Lahrech: Wonderful karate dojo headed by Sensei Nick Toma, a veteran martial artist and karate teacher with over thirty years of experience. The training facility is top notch, housed within the newly renovated Palisades Recreation center. I have been training with Sensei Nick for over 10 years now. His commitment, knowledge and dedication as a martial arts instructor is second to none. The group trains three times a week (Mo., We. and Fr.) from 6-8 and classes are typically comprised of all levels (beginners to 2nd degree black belts) and all age ranges (7 to almost 60 y.o.). If you are an experienced martial artist or would like to give karate a try, I highly recommend stopping by.

Kenny Hensley: I found Sensei Nick by chance after a 20 year break from training. Kyokushin is my life!! This dojo is my family. Sensei Nick is absolutely incredible. No one in the dojo would trade him for the world. He is amazing. He knows what he is doing and will show in the training. He has a passion that is displayed in the dojo. If you want to try karate then this is the place!! It will change your life. Osu!! Sensei Nick Toma!!

Yong Studios DC: what do users think?

J & C Caminos: Positive: Professionalism, ValueMy son has been going to Yong Studios for almost 5 years and he loves it!!! Master Kim is the best and so is Mr. Surage and the rest of the teaching team. They teach the kids discipline and focus and confidence. I would highly recommend Yong Studios for anyone that wants to learn Taekwondo in a great atmosphere!!!!

Ivan Moore: This is an amazing Taekwondo studio! My two sons and I took classes at Yong Studios over a number of years. The instructors are top notch and break down the difference kicks, punches, blocks, forms, etc. so they are easier to learn and you can develop good technique. They vary the different activities in different classes to keep it interesting. Their emphasis on physical fitness, stretching and mental focus helps their students. I love how they incorporate some kickboxing elements in their instruction, which results in even better self defense techniques. The instructors command respect, but have developed a real family friendly atmosphere. I have moved away from the DC area and Yong Studios is one of the things I miss the most! Tip: You really need to commit to coming to class at least 2-3 times per week to see the best results.

Jim LoScalzo: My kids have gone to Yong Studios for more than ten years—I can’t recommend them enough. Founder Master Kim and teacher Master Surage offer fun, empowering, no-nonsense training for a variety of ages. One aspect I find especially appealing: kids are required to leave the horseplay at the door. If you don’t behave, you get called out. Also, advanced belts do get to spare in full protective gear. For my kids, Taekwondo is now more than a martial art—it’s a lifestyle. And Yong Studios is more than a studio—it’s an institution.

Stefan Atev: Positive: Professionalism, QualityHave attended the studio for about 4 years with my middle-school aged son. Great instruction, varied classes, and continuous sparring. It's a more traditional Taekwondo school that does not shy away from hand techniques in sparring. The online classes have also worked great during the Covid lockdown.

David Blair: This is the first martial arts school I ever attended. I left the District ten years ago and have trained in more schools than I care to count, but this remains the unqualified gold standard by which I judge all others. No other school I have attended matches Yong Studios in the thoroughness or precision of the instruction. What sets Yong Studios apart, in my view, is that the instructors explicitly break down each technique into its constituent parts and explain how each part should be performed, and how it adds to the greater whole. Most instructors simply demonstrate a round kick once or twice and expect the students to replicate the movement. This leads to a lot of very, very sloppy technique, particularly among the lower belts. Yong Studios instructors explicitly perform each step of the technique and insist that students learn these steps individually before attempting to perform the entire movement. This means that learning each technique takes more time, but it also means that when the student learns a technique, he or she learns it correctly. I can assure you, that’s something that far too few studios can boast. As a wise man once said, if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.

Bill Peyser: I can’t say enough good things about Yong Studios. Master Kim and Master Surage have developed and sustained a fantastic Tae Kwon Do program grounded in friendship, respect, knowledge, honesty, discipline, and strength. These values are apparent in the way they run the studio and instruct the students. Yong Studios offers a great combination of traditional Tae Kwon Do along with practical sparring training. Even though repetition is key to learning, retaining, and perfecting martial arts skills, every class is unique and offers just the right balance of stretching and fitness training. Both masters have the unique ability to demonstrate techniques, break them down step-by-step, explain their rationale and application, and fold them into the curriculum. I highly recommend this studio to kids, teens, and adults.

Colin Bartley: Both instructures know their stuff. They work really hard with all ages and abilities. No nonsense, no goofing. It's not cheap, the more you go the more cost effective it becomes, but you really need to be going at least twice a week, and try and be consistent.

Maureen Javers: My son has been taking lessons for nearly three years and loves Yongs Studios. He is nine, a brown belt and excited to continue with Tae Kwon Do for as long as possible - he can't wait to be a possible teenage teacher/helper. The staff makes the sessions fun while also challenging. They truly get to know the students and do a great job with individual teaching, in a group setting.

Jada Fife: I've been at Yong Studios now for over seven years now. It feels like a second home to me. I would highly recommend others to practice here, especially teenagers. I started pretty late (I was 11) and I always felt like I belonged. Yong Studios was the perfect place for me to grow up. The masters not only taught me taekwondo, but also how to be confident, brave, and determined, as cliche as it sounds.

Shannon: Positive: Communication, Quality, ValueI mostly go to the Bethesda studio, but it's great to have the option of Tenleytown as well for if class times at Bethesda don't work with my schedule. The studio is conveniently located right across from the Metro and is a welcoming environment for new students.

BETA Academy: what do users think?

Ma D: Awesome place for beginners and advanced BJJ lovers. Very friendly people. Good technics. I highly recommended this place who visiting Washington DC also who decided to start practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Guys when you browsing different clubs with thoughts about what to choose please go there and you will meet really cool professional people. Good luck everyone. Oss.

Jack Cantlay: The instruction is top notch. Your instructors are amazing and follow a coherent system of training so that each week is a new thing. The gym culture is very friendly and welcoming but I still feel like I can get competitive live rolls. It really matters that your instructors are so friendly. That goes a long way. But they still push me! I love the balance.
Response: Thank you so much Jack, we appreciate that! We pride ourselves on our welcoming community and believe that a strong community fosters growth in our students.

Thuhuong Dao: - Coach to child ratio was excellent. - Coaches did a great job working the room and - working with each child/group. - Introduction/greet for my children’s first class was great and energetic. - Disciplining the students during class was thorough and appreciated. - Dismissal of students was organized (liked how the coach only let the kids go when he say the parents).
Response: HI there! Thank you so much for the review! We appreciate your feedback and we're so happy that you experienced the professionalism of our Kids' coaches!

Tara Trinity: Coach Carlos, coach D, everyone is amazing. We love Beta!!!! My son has come into an environment that supports him and is compassionate as well as disciplined. The diversity is something I was personally looking for, and that’s something that is even more a bonus.

Walter Bayer: Great place for all-levels of Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu enthusiasts. Very beginner-friendly with knowledgeable coaches who will patiently walk you through everything you need to know. After training here for a few sessions, you'll experience the great sense of community they foster. I loved that there was also a weight room to supplement training with strength & conditioning.

Tim .G: We were in DC on vacation and they welcomed us in for open mat, even stayed later to roll. Coach Gabriel was awesome. Awesome facility! Super friendly community! I definitely recommend!

Tyrone Calvin: I’m no strange to BETA academy and every time I go, I leave better than I arrived. Everyone is very friendly and professional. The Brazilian Ju Jitsu class is informative and state of the art in self defense.

CJ Francis: I love the welcoming culture, the high level and clarity of instruction, the daily availability of no gi classes as well as gi. Also the ample amount of time given for both drilling and sparring.

Saron Dessalegn: Friendly Coaches are willing to help and give good instructions!! Definitely recommend for a great education in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.
Response: Thank you so much Saron!

Amy Putens: In honesty we could not be more thrilled with our experience with BETA! We have been apart of the BETA community for approximately 2yrs. We started out just being an attendee of their summer program. After summer was over we would drive by often and my daughter would ask- "When do we get to go back to beta?" I knew then that this was where we needed to be. When you have a daughter (who is a girlie girlie) wanting to be apart of something so much bigger than Ballet or gymnastics I was sold. We then signed up for the after school program and we haven't turned back since. The excitement both my children have for their amazing staff and program is the reward for me at the end of the day. Having being I can trust in to guild my children down the right path and for my kids to respect them is 100% why we choose BETA!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU BETA! Thank you for all that you give!!!!!!
Response: Hi Amy, thank you so much for sharing your story with us! It makes us proud to have kids as enthusiastic and motivated as yours in our Kids Program!

Full Circle Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Shai Henderson: One of the greatest decisions of my life was to join the Combat Kuntao program here at Full Circle Martial Arts Academy. I have learned so much more than just the physical aspect of martial arts and it shows in my day to day life. The family environment and the genuine people is what captured me first, everything else is just a SWEET bonus!

Carene Simon: Full Circle Martial Arts Academy provides an amazing program for the community! The staff and instructors foster a family atmosphere that is welcoming and friendly. They are very professional and teach respect and self confidence. I highly recommend this school. Plus, they are COVID-19 conscious.

Rob Smith: Having been involved with martial arts prior to being introduced with Full Circle, I had a subconscious expectation all martial arts training being somewhat the same. Any notion I previously had has been far, far exceeded!! The focus on all participants having a high level of moral values, respect for all people as well as respect for martial arts, the intentionality around family/ the spirit of family being a cornerstone of that community and the community at large, the commitment to young people being molded into well-disciplined, respectful, intelligent, strong citizens, all those characteristics and more, have made the Full Circle environment a place that I trust having my family develop, fellowship, and interact on many levels. Great, highly recommended institution!!

Azeb Kinder: When I visited Full Circle in February (2020) , I was apprehensive about taking up martial arts at my age and with no experience. During that first visit everyone was so warm and welcoming, they answered all of my questions and made me feel comfortable and confident. I’ve been training with them ever since. Grand Master Scott and the Guros are amazing instructors and it truly feels like family!

Lionel Walker: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueMy experience at Full Circle has been phenomenal! When they say, "Welcome to the family!", it's not just a cliché. They actually mean it! From the top down to the students, everyone is courteous and positive. Full Circle is hands down the best Martial Arts Academy in town!

Diane Cannon: My son have been attending Full Circle Martial Art twice week for a years and he has been doing well. It was a family decision to put my son into martial arts program so he could learn how to protect himself and build up his confidence. Full Circle has met all my expectation for my son. There are professional people work there and a great men and women who are good mentors for young people. I will be looking into summer camp for my daughter. I do recommend this school for any child.

Smooth Rebel: I've been a student at Full Circle Martial Arts Academy for since 2015. I'm glad I attend such a wonderful school. It's more than a school it's my extended family. I love everything about it, the instructions from GM Samuel Scott, my Guros, classmates, and the family atmosphere. We all learn from each other and there is plenty of support on & off the mat. I'm learning discipline, leadership skills, how to defend myself and much more. Since I've been attending I'm more confident, aware of my surroundings, patient, stronger mentality & physically. I recommend my school to everyone that want to defend themselves and their family. You will also build your character. Check us out, you won't regret it!

Valencia Robinson: Awesome place to grow not only in the martial arts but personally! My girls grew up in Full Circle - both Blackbelts - and I've had the opportunity to watch many kids as young as 4 grow and eventually earn their Black belts as well ... Truly a family environment and a school that is actively involved in the community ... Plus the staff, instructors, and owner are genuinely nice! Highly recommend Full Circle as a great choice for martial art training!

Shanietta Muhammad: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueI love Full Circle Martial Arts Academy. From the moment you walk in it feels like family. The instructors are GREAT and the atmosphere is very nurturing. My only regret is not bringing my family there sooner.

Hope Cruz Clark: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueFull Circle is for everyone - young and old, male or female. They do not just teach self-defense, but they also help builds self-esteem and grow leaders. The school is a family atmosphere and the owner consistently gives back to the community. Check them out and I promise that you will be glad that you did.

Yong Studios Martial Arts - Bethesda: what do users think?

Andrew mahaffie: Hands down the best martial arts school in the whole DMV area! Both the DC and Bethesda locations foster a strong community of students and instructors that make the studio like a second home. Master Kim and Master Surage are both extremely qualified and passionate instructors that hold students to the same high standards that they hold themselves. I have been with Yong Studios for 17 years now and still find myself learning and growing every time I go back for a class (in addition to being a great workout!). I would highly recommend the studio to everyone kids and adults!!!

Gabriel LoScalzo: I have been a student at Yong Studios for about 12 years, and every time I take class, I learn something new. Both of the instructors are excellent. They work hard to ensure that in every class, no matter your skill level, you are working hard, breaking a sweat and learning the techniques properly -- whether it's learning a new form, practicing combinations or sparring. Taking classes as a child or as an adult teaches you how to be disciplined and how to defend yourself.

Shannon: Yong Studios took over from Coles Martial Arts back in January and they have done a great job handling the transition amongst the COVID crisis-keeping students up to date and doing what they can to still operate with everyone's safety in mind (including offering online instruction). Both Master Kim and Master Surage are extremely knowledgeable and skilled instructors, as well as genuinely good people! With classes offered every day except Sundays, depending on your availability you can really get a lot out of each month of training. Highly recommend!

Jehaan R: Yong Studios has been a part of my life for over 15 years now. I came in as an awkward 7 year old with zero coordination, no confidence, and no friends. I’m proud to say I now actually have all of those things thanks to Master Kim and Master Surage, and what they’ve built here. They make this place feel like home, and I’m a happier, stronger, more confident person because of it. If you’re looking for a place for your kid to grow in a safe space with incredible instructors and mentors, choose Yong Studios. If you’re looking for a place to continue or start your Taekwondo journey as an adult, this is it, you will not find a better studio (trust me, I’ve tried).

_ olival: Exceptional teachers make this studio great. Masters Kim and Surage combine technical expertise and high expectations for students with humor, warmth, and genuine joy in interacting with young people. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate that this studio has been almost a 2nd home for our son over the past decade, as he has grown from a skinny and fidgety 7 year old into the strong, confident high school senior he is today. If you are a parent looking for a safe place for your child to grow and thrive--Yong Studios is it!

serena loscalzo: Tae kwon do at Young studios has changed my life. I started going there when I was five years old, and I’ve never stoped going there since. They inspire they’re students to work hard in the studio, and out. During COVID, I have needed them more than ever to stay in shape, and luckily, they have installed safety measures such as mask wearing, sanitation, and social distancing. If you are not comfortable with going in studio, they have online classes.

Luke W: I started at Yong Studios back in 2010 because my parents signed me up since I needed an afterschool activity and I wasn't all that into soccer or theater. Ever since then, I haven't stopped! Master Kim and Master Surage constantly push all of their students, adult or child, to do better. Yong Studios offers a positive learning environment where students are not only encouraged by the instructors to do well, but by each other. It's definetly a place where you build long lasting and genuine relationships with all of your peers. For children specifically, Yong Studios also offers an environment where they can acquire discipline in a positive environment, develop leadership skills, and grow both physically and mentally. It's an environment where there is a clear hierarchy of ranks and where respect and focus are part of the guiding principles, but it's not a place where hazing or humiliation is in store for someone of a lower rank. To the contrary, the rank is earned every day and those who try to bully people because of their rank are quickly reprimanded. In addition, child students are put in an environment where they have more opportunities to hone leadership skills that may serve them well later in life. Higher ranking students are expected to be the more mature mentor/peers that lower ranking students can approach for help with technique or form. It's not uncommon to see students of the same age helping each other with their forms or combinations before and after class. Once a child student reaches black belt, they are also put into a position where they have the opportunity to become a student instructor, leading other groups of students in classes. The higher ranking black belts also help to judge at belt examinations and supervise other student instructors. The leadership opportunites afforded are much greater than in most other after school sports in which it is unlikely that a child will gain much leadership experience until they become a team captain in their final years of secondary school. At Yong Studios, students much younger are put in a position where they are immersed into the responsibilites of leading others from a young age which, regardless of whether or not someone intends to pursue a leadership or management related career, is still helpful in developing interpersonal skills. Ultimately, Yong Studios is a positive environment for people of all ages and for anyone interested in trying out a martial art or Taekwondo specifically, I would highly reccomend it.

Jada Fife: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueI recently switched to going to Yong Studios Bethesda as opposed to the studio in Tenleytown. Although the space is different, the same quality instruction and community is still there even in this pandemic. Classes are limited so that students can social distance and everyone wears masks. Also, parking is plentiful.

John Hansen: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueExcellent classes with instructors who have adjusted to the COVID-19 pandemic with online and in-person (with masks) instruction that has been essential to staying in shape and learning new skills in this difficult period.

Madeline Taub: Best studio in the area! The instructors really care about the students and create a community that will make you want to keep coming back. Great for children and adults!

Albora T: When I was living in the United States for a while, I had the opportunity to attend classes that are taught in dc judo. Sadiq Mujahid: I really enjoyed the opportunity to train at DC Judo. I'm new to the art and everyone was extremely helpful and friendly and took the time to explain the various techniques to me. I can't wait to come here again.

Pentagon Mixed Martial Arts: what do users think?

Michael “Newmie” Newman: Fantastic facilities, welcoming owners & staff, excellent initiative and follow up from highly-qualified & patient trainers. My son & i both excel (soar!) at every professionally-designed training session and class at Pentagon MMA. Teddy is my regular trainer, consistently showing up to push me, break me, lift me when my own efforts are lacking. Sifting out the weak vibes with slick music, his enabling fortitude is the exact coaching you will benefit from as well. Trust this reborn, remade 55 yr old “dad with gray hair and missing memory” — the place to find your fit self again is right here at Pentagon MMA. #[As known well, the discipline must come from within YOU. For this gym and the facilities, along with the experienced staff, and your committed presence combined is THE ONE *CATALYST* YOU need to patiently push yourself to find again once-held that holistic belief in yourself… and achieve grand, new fitness goals. Results guaranteed!]
Response: Michael, thank you so much for your kind words. Thank you for entrusting us with your family’s martial arts journey!

David Ebb: This place is simply a cut above the rest! The workouts are well thought out and crazy fun! Class sizes aren't too big. You go at your own pace and skill level so it's never intimidating. You can always turn it up if need be and the coaches are right there to encouraged and push you through. The environment is very clean, friendly and inviting, you feel like family. It starts with the owners, they're fantastic! They bring a highly trained staff, professionalism and a kids program that's unmatched. I would highly recommend.
Response: Thank you David! We are grateful for your trust and for sticking with us since our very early days.

Joshua Ogboenyiya: I have been a member at pentagon for about 3 years now and I can’t think of a better gym to train at. All the coaches take their time explaining the different techniques, and they really have an attention for detail. I can tell this is more than fitness and being in shape. Everyone at pentagon truly wants students to grow and improve as martial artists. Everyone is warm and inviting and you can immediately get the feeling of a community among the student, coaches, and staff. I would recommend training at pentagon to anyone who has thought about joining a gym but hasn’t taken the leap yet – you won’t regret it.
Response: Joshua, thank you for your kind words and for entrusting us with your martial arts journey. We appreciate you!

Morgan Boswell (TheCalixte): I started doing MMA at 16 and have trained at a few different gyms. I have NEVER had the type of coaching and teammates anywhere else. The coaches at Pentagon truly care about each and every person and make it a comfortable environment for beginners through advanced. I have NEVER felt better about my body, mind, and ability then before- going on a year now and planning on many, many more! Whether you're looking to get in shape, fight, train, make friends, find a family, this gym has it all!! I love Pentagon!!!
Response: Morgan, we are grateful for you and the opportunity you gave us to work with you towards your martial arts goals. Our team will be so happy to read this review!

B: Thoroughly enjoyed my time at PMMA over the course of 3-4 years. Was a great way to keep in shape while learning self defense arts. Also a great way to keep yourself humble while sparring against other focused driven individuals. Can’t recommend enough. Coaching staff was also excellent abs they kept the place clean and tidy.
Response: Hey B, thanks so much for your kind words!

Carl Weis: After looking at several MMA gyms in the area, I decided to give Pentagon MMA a try. Their involvement in the community and kids programs are what appealed to me at first, because I was looking for a place that my 4 year old could attend, but it was everything else about this gym that convinced me to start training there as well. This place is awesome! The staff, instructors, and students are very professional, friendly, and welcoming. I have seen so much improvement with my son and his behavior after going here, and I have seen huge improvement in my training as well. I cannot say enough good things about this gym. If you are looking to get into martial arts, Muay Thai, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, or any of their other programs you owe it to yourself to try it out. I promise you won’t regret it. You will get into the best shape of your life, and will be part of a family that encourages you to be your best self inside and outside of the gym. You will make friends and above all you will build habits that last. Thank you for everything that you do. I’m proud to represent Pentagon MMA and recommend it to everyone I know.
Response: Carl, we are beyond grateful for your kind words and feedback. Thank you for trusting us with your family’s martial arts journey and for putting in the work to get a little better, each and every day. We will keep working hard to bring you the best service we can!

Eleanor D: I came to Pentagon MMA after trying a few other martial arts gyms in the area and immediately liked the atmosphere, the classes, and the people. The trial program was awesome, and I signed up to start the second I finished it. While I love the Muay Thai classes, and how they push you outside your comfort zone and work every part of your body, the best thing about this place is the community they have cultivated. There’s no better place to train!
Response: Hi Eleanor, thank you so much for making our day with your kind words, and for reminding us why we do what we do every day. We appreciate you and will keep working hard to help you reach your goals!

Olivia Holmes: An amazing gym in so many ways. I highly highly recommend all programs here and specifically the jiu jitsu program; especially if you're a woman, it's just such a great group of strong and supportive women out on the mats. The instructors are the highest quality and really make it a priority to make everyone feel welcome, safe, and to create a challenging and fun learning environment. Definitely recommend if you're looking to get into any kind of martial arts!! Keep up the great work Pentagon!!
Response: Thanks so much Olivia! We appreciate your trust and look forward to helping you reach your goals.

Celine Ferguson: This gym is amazing! The staff is friendly, professional, and incredible at what they do. They’ve made me feel welcome since day one and really do their best to make sure you understand the technique & train hard. In just a few months I’ve learned so much and still feel physically challenged every time I walk in. I highly recommend pentagon MMA.
Response: Celine, thanks so much for your feedback and kind words! We are thankful for you and will keep working hard to help you achieve your goals.

Nicholas Hunter: I started at Pentagon MMA when I was only 11 years old in the young warriors program. Ever since I started the instructors there focused on teaching not only martial arts but discipline and respect too. They made sure to push everyone in the class and to make sure they learned not only martial arts but life lessons as well. I am now 18 and still attend classes at pentagon MMA however, now they are the adult classes. The instructors make the classes a lot of fun for everyone while also pushing us to become better. The environment at pentagon MMA is one of the best things about the gym. Everyone is so nice and always willing to help, it’s just one big friend group where everyone has fun.
Response: Nicholas, it has been an honor watching you grow in your martial arts journey. We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

District Martial Arts | MMA Gym: what do users think?

Jakob: Overall a great gym to train at. It's in a convenient location and offers a variety of disciplines, so you definitely get your money's worth. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming to all. I'd highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to get involved in martial arts.
Response: Thank you Jakob!

Celeste Gee: Great gym, location, and staff! As a newcomer to Muay Thai, and Boxing I was super nervous to sign up for a class, but the coaches were so welcoming and helpful in teaching me the correct form and techniques, especially as a left-hander! The class was so exhilarating, fun, and full of energy that I didn't even realize an hour passed until the class was over. I love when you can get a total body workout without feeling the monotony and boredom of going to the gym. I would definitely recommend this to friends in the area and anyone interested in learning about any of the martial arts styles they offer. Thank you District Martial Arts!
Response: Thank you Celeste!

Tiana Bsnjk: Honestly a pretty fantastic place. No matter what level you are, the instructors work to accommodate you. Beginner? No problem. Someone from DMA will 100% work with you to get you up to speed on technique and style. They're also incredibly warm and welcoming, friendly, and reassuring. You won't feel out of place here - definitely recommend DMA out of any other place in the area if you're serious about self defense. They'll make sure you're trained properly!

Drew Ehlers: Positive: ProfessionalismThe classes that I attended at District were great! BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai- all professionally coached, and the group of men that I trained with were exceptional. Trainers and Participants all were very helpful in making sure everyone was progressing.
Response: Thank you Drew!

Rachel Wang: The community at DMA was incredibly welcoming even for beginners -- people remembered my name and gave me helpful tips from the very first class I attended. Not only do they have boxing and muay thai classes, they also have weekly yoga, which I really appreciated. Definitely recommend checking out this community, even if you’re a beginner like me!
Response: Thank you Rachel!

V M: Its a great gym to train a variety of martial art disciplines: bjj, boxing, muay thai, judo, wrestling, etc. The classes are offered throughout the day and on the weekends. The instructors are very knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to help. The staff are friendly and very helpful. I'd highly recommend this gym to anyone who wants to train martial arts or is just looking to get in shape.
Response: Thank you V M! Great having you at DMA!

Gerald Bryant: Pros: The gym offers a good variety of martial arts with instructors that are very knowledgeable and lead great classes.Cons: Gym is smaller so make sure to schedule classes enough ahead of time to ensure a slot in the class.

Andrew Turner: My girlfriend and I attended a free trial class the other day. At first we were both nervous and confused, but this was partly because we showed up late and without signing our waivers yet. When we jumped in we felt a bit out of place, but that changed quickly. I have a small amount of experience but my girlfriend has next to none but we both found the MMA class to be accommodating (especially with the kind and patient instructor). Overall, a wonderful environment with quality equipment, great people, and excellent instruction.
Response: Hi Andrew, It was a pleasure to have you and your girlfriend at our school. Thank you for coming!

Laura Gross: Positive: QualityI really enjoy my classes at this gym, everyone is so welcoming. For a new person just getting into martial arts all my instructors were super supportive and provided clear direction. Whether you are looking to change up your workouts or learn a new skill I would highly recommend giving this gym a try.
Response: Thank you Laura!

Gori Olufon: I go to District Martial Arts for Brazilian Juijitsu, BJJ and it is excellent. The coaches are knowledgeable and encouraging and the facility is beautiful. I’m really looking forward to the new Judo class! Here’s to another amazing year!
Response: Thank you Gori! It’s a pleasure to have you part of the DMA community.

Kaizen Karate: what do users think?

Josh Wesnidge: Kaizen Karate really is a great company that truly cares about teaching karate the way it’s supposed to be taught. Some dojo’s give belt promotions out very easily, but with Kaizen, everything is earned so you know that your skill level corresponds with your belt level. The instructors are all very personable, knowledgeable, and professional. While I solely attend the adult classes, after seeing some of the kid’s classes, I can tell that the kids really enjoy their time in class and have a ton of fun learning karate. Overall, whether you’re taking karate as an adult or signing your child up for classes, I highly recommend Kaizen Karate!

Kristin Torkelsen: My daughter has been with Kaizen Karate for 10 years. She currently attends 5 classes/week and is about to get her black belt soon. This isn’t some cookie-cutter karate where you earn a belt by paying money and/or showing up. This school teaches real karate and how to fight, compete, respect one another, build integrity and confidence... my daughter is 15 and calls this her family. She also attends the summer camp which she tells me is her favorite time of the year. Great place. Great instructors.

Greg Marchand: Great experience for the whole family. You're never too late to start!

Christopher Arnold: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueThis is an outstanding program! I recommend it for the youth program. Also a chance for adults to participate too! Great chance to bond and do something together!!

Mark Saltman: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueThis is really a fantastic organization. Instruction from caring, positive teachers who seek to uplift and motivate students.

Karina Guzman: This is the 2nd time that they cancel my daughters yoga class for the whole semester. They literally let you know the day of. Worst company ever
Response: Hi Karina, we tried to reach you to resolve the matter but have not heard back yet. Please contact our office as soon as you have a moment as we would love to resolve the matter and get your daughter into a class that works for your schedule! The class at VMES has always been popular as you know, but this session did not have enough students enrolled to run the class. The past couple sessions that you enrolled for were a big success and the instructor loved teaching all the students. I'm sorry we had to cancel the class as we wanted to allow as much time as possible to allow parents to register. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to assist! -Kaizen Office Team-

Katrina Roux-Bernstein: Positive: Professionalism, Quality, ValueWe have had excellent experiences with this company. My son has been doing this for a while now and we are very happy

Kogaion Academy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Judo: what do users think?

Ed Herranz: The last time I studied judo was around 15 years ago in NJ at Tech Judo. While there were some very good coaches there, I did not feel they cared much about my safety, and they allowed other students to be too rough with lesser experienced students as myself. I was hesitant to go back to judo again now in my 50’s, but Sensei Victor is the best judo teacher I have ever had and he’s deeply concerned about the safety of his students. He helped me realize it’s never too late to go back to Judo.
Response: Thank you Ed! We are very happy to have you in our judo class.

Paola Martinez: Kogaion Academy is one of the best places that I’ve been trained Judo at. They helped me improve my Judo skills for my next competition. I even drove 8 hours just to train with them with my family!
Response: Thank you Paola! You are welcome any time.

Anthony Iorio: I've been attending Kogaion for about 5 months now, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to train. As a beginner that was kind of nervous about trying something new, the instructor (Victor) did an awesome job of making me feel welcome, as did the whole community at Kogaion. Victor offers really valuable input on how you can improve, and again you cannot overstate how great the overall culture and atmosphere at the gym is. There is a great mix of both beginners and advanced belts, and everyone strikes a nice balance of maintaining competitiveness, but also remaining supportive of one another. I would say Kogaion has something to offer for everyone. Also as someone with a busy schedule, the nice balance of morning and evening classes is really great. Also, coming from a beginner I would definitely recommend giving the one free class a shot. You will not regret it!
Response: Thanks for your review Tony! We are super happy to be witnessing your progress since day one.

Gary Hilleshiem: Outstanding school. Instructors had high level detail and value added in transitions and drills throughout the entire class. Students were encouraging, welcoming friendly to visitors. If you are in the area and looking to start jiujitsu or just visiting do yourself a favor and check this place out.
Response: Thank you Gary! You’re welcome back anytime.

Isra Harahap: The perfect and complete martial arts dojo!! I considered my self lucky to find Kogaion Academy, it is the perfect and complete gym with a bargain price. This a dojo where you can workout as a beginner, an experienced martial arts practitioner, or you can be a competitor it you want test what you have learned. You can get great training and instructions everyday and in a very safe environment. Victor and Beatrice are great instructors with attention to details and will work and engage with you individually in the class, it feels like you are getting a private lesson. There are very few gyms that will teach you Judo and Brazilian Jujitsu the combination gives you the knowledge to safely take your opponent/attacker from standing to the ground and controlling the person on the ground. You can come to workout at the dojo everyday of the week, again this is a bargain!!
Response: Thank you Isra! We are super happy to have you here.

Kristen Medvetz: I started doing BJJ because my husband kept begging me to try it with him. Originally I had agreed thinking, hey, I’ll try anything once. Now I can’t get enough of it. I was immediately welcomed by so many kind and accepting people. I was amazed at what these people could do and I wanted to be just like them. It’s a great place for beginners and experienced people alike. There’s a good variety of people, and a great group of women. If you’re a woman thinking about doing BJJ this is a great place to start.
Response: Thank you Kristen. You and Travis will always have a home here.

Samuel Salazar: For those who are looking for a nice environment where you can learn something you’re interested in like Brazilian Jiu jitsu or Judo, then this place is perfect for anyone out there at any age. The moment you join this academy, you enter into a world where you’re always welcomed, a world where you become part of a family that’s always there to help you to achieve your goals. Whether your goal to own all the belts in Judo or to simply burn some calories, this is a good place to start or continue this path. People here are really nice, supportive, fun, and overall it’s place where you can enjoy the experience of martial arts. The schedule of this academy is pretty solid since there’s classes every day and you can participate in tournaments if you want as well. Don’t feel committed to this academy either, if it’s not your thing, there’s no shame in leaving, you can always comeback again with the doors open. Just want to mention that there’s an extreme low amount of teenagers in this academy from what I’ve seen in the adult classes, the majority are men and women although mostly men. If you’re a woman, you’re always welcome to come, there’s no judgment or anything like that, in fact, the best fighter I know is a woman, so don’t feel intimidated or ashamed if you’re interested in learn something new or trying to progress on your favorite martial art, we are all here to help and support you. Now, for the teenagers, unless you’re interested fighting people who are like 50 pounds heavier than you, then this is the right place for you, take it from a guy in his high school years who’s been here for over a year. Although we can change this situation if more teenagers join. This is without a doubt a good academy worthy of what it has to offer to everyone.
Response: Thanks for the great review Sam!

Beatrice Jin: I have been training at Kogaion for three years. While we train hard, Victor also places a high emphasis on skill development and learning. The jiujitsu and judo teaching is rooted in fundamental principles but techniques are always updated to keep up with the sports which are growing and modernizing. In my opinion this is one of the best places to become a well rounded grappler, where students are proficient on their feet and on the ground, in the gi and without it.
Response: Thanks B 😊

Min Hwangpo: Kogaion is a great environment with friendly people. There is a lot of talent and knowledge in the room. Professor Vasile and coach Jin are detailed in their instruction. Their teachings translate well into competitions. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to learn or be part of the Judo/BJJ community.
Response: Thank you Steve for being part of the journey!

Ryson Owens: Came here after looking at multiple other gyms and was immediately impressed by the vibe. The students and coaches are friendly, the instruction is top-notch and highly-technical, and there's a great variety of classes to learn every aspect of grappling. 10/10 would join again.
Response: Thanks Ryson! We’re glad to have you on board.

USKC: what do users think?

Google Enthusiast: USKC is a great martial arts school. Master Thomas does an excellent job mixing traditional martial arts with modern techniques. His focus is on practical skills and helping students develop a solid foundation in self defense. Unlike most schools, which tend to have strong adult classes or kid's classes, USKC manages to provide outstanding classes for both age groups. USKC typically offers one free trial class for potential students. If you're curious about this place, there's no reason you shouldn't come out and give it a try. For those interested, USKC offers full contact sparring, so you can truly build up your martial arts and self defense skills. You will be able to work on both your striking and grappling techniques during sparring sessions. And don't worry if you are new to sparring or uneasy about it. The instructors will help you grow, but never pressure you to spar at a level you are uncomfortable with. If you want to go light or simply focus more on perfecting your technique and accuracy, you can. No issues at all.

Mona Salah: I have been taking my children here for 20 years. I believe Master Thomas teaches them excellent self defense skills. This is not a belt mill, kids don't graduate to a belt to they have mastered the level they are on. This can be challenging for parent and child who want to see "immediate" progress. But sometimes, that staying at the same level a year or so, is what they need. Growth is not always a steady incline. I have had 2 kids achieve their black belts, and 2 are in process. I love that he has them grappling. It's been especially helpful to my girls. Grappling against the boys and men, who are all bigger and stronger has given them confidence in what to do if that ever occurs in real life. The goal is to do damage and get away safe. I highly highly recommend Master Thomas and USKC.

Joshua Lynch: I was looking for a place to learn a practical martial art/self defense. I was researching which martial art is best for what I was looking for and USKC is the place, as he teaches a mixture of marital arts. So you don't have to settle for just one. Master Thomas takes his advanced skills from Hapkido, Tae-Kwon-Do, Judo, and Akido (maybe some others) and teaches very practical self defense. The classes are very fun and not overcrowded or with stuck-up students. Everyone is very welcoming and helpful.

john thomas: They offer an all encompassing no nonsense program like you wouldn't believe.I strongly recommend you try a free class and confirm what everyone is talking about Give them a call and they'll set you up.

Sahar Riccardi: Incredible instructor. Loved everything about how he taught the kids.
