Hung Tao Choi Mei Kung Fu Academy: what do users think?

Katy Hull: I love this place. It is an incredible resource for DC families - the children's program is fun and teaches kids amazing skills of listening, creativity, kindness, and mutual respect, all while building their coordination and strength. And it is free for DC kids and teens.

Jake Hackman: It's cool, I think I can say for certain that Jow Ga is the most popular style of kung fu in DC, because it has a long history here... And you can be a part of that tradition :) Masks are still required as of now... Just think of it like high-altitude training!

Christopher Hsu: Visited this place a while back, during my search for a legitimate Sanda/Sanshou, or Wushu-based sparring course. Sat in for one class, and didn't feel the junior instructor really had a solid grasp of the fundamental kung fu techniques, let alone, the bag-work (ie. punching correctly with hip, leg, and guard). Moreover, seeing Islamic imagery placed in a Chinese kung fu place (a Daoist, Buddhist, Confucian space) next to traditional incense bowls just screamed "mis-blending", "bastardization", or "misappropriation" to me. The combination of these two did not convince me that this place was philosophically authentic enough, nor would it offer combat-practical training. Frame of reference: lifetime background in Shaolin wushu, Shotokan karate, Muay Thai, and MMA.

Ken Rubotzky: Community-oriented Kung Fu and Tai Chi school teaching children and adults in lion dance, dragon dance, sparring, forms, techniques and drumming. Hung Tao Choy Mei runs children's camps in the Summer; children's programs during the school year. It produces an annual award event at the historic Lincoln Theatre for outstanding national artist-activists that also showcases local performing artists. The founder and lead instructor is a native Washingtonian who supports the health and welfare of students through the school, through testimony before city council, and through support of similar organizations in the city. Newbies pay one fee for first 18 classes and uniform. Then students pay monthly tuition after 18 classes used up. There are no contracts, and you can train as often as you want.

Gui Ony: Love it

DC Aikido Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Akire Adams: For anybody looking to learn self defense and build a foundation in martial arts I think this would be a great place to start but you have to want it and actually put forth the effort and ask questions coming here definitely feels like I'm part of the family and the price per month is affordable so if you want to start and gain some personal confidence I definitely think you should join!

walter lewis: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueAll of the staff are very empowering and professional. I felt welcomed. The instructors are very patient and humble. I would highly recommend DC Aikido to anyone seeking to develop self confidence, patience, and self defense skills.

CST CST: Michael Sensei organized an amazing trip to Japan this year. We were 12 people that spent 8 days wonderful days training and sightseeing with members of our sister dojo in Naha and Okinawa city, in Japan. This was my second trip with DC Aikido, and let me tell you it was legendary! We had the best time ever, We immersed ourselves in the Japanese culture. We had the experience of sleeping in a typical Japanese bed. We enjoyed the most exotic foods, and most importantly, made wonderful friends! Hopefully, the Japanese group will come to visit DC next year. Can't wait to show them around town! Thank you Michael Sensei for organizing this epic trip!
Response: And Hilda, we all can't wait for you to come back to Japan a third time!! Your presence on the trip made it that much MORE special. Thank you for all you do!!

Gideon Culman: Nothing but high praise for DC Aikido! I joined the studio last summer for two reasons: to work up a sweat and to use aikido as a physical prism that casts new light on the conversations I conduct day-in, day-out for work as a life coach. From day 1 it has superseded my expectations in the following ways: Everybody is supportive. Anytime I have been stuck, somebody has been there to show me the way. The instructors are eager and attentive. The sparkle on the sheen of DC Aikido’s bright culture is its students, who patiently and respectfully help bring less advanced students to their next level. Every lesson is enlightening. Each class points to new ways I can better serve my clients. Whether we study balance, flexibility, striking or grabbing, not a single lesson goes by without offering up new insights. These insights translate immediately into more adroit and powerful conversations – and satisfied clients.

Rio's “mhall3D” Art 1: GREAT Dojo! I have been training for about a year at DC Aikido and I love it! The folks there are amazing! Veltri Sensei and his team provide a fun and friendly environment for kids and adults. I have gained so much than just learning Aikido. I have gained confidence, strength, and entire Dojo family that I value as my own family. I have found that in training he continually pushes his students to improve their game, both in examining the group as a whole and pinpointing the exact areas that each individual student needs to improve. The support I have received at the dojo has helped improve not only my Aikido and techniques, but my overall sense of self on the mat...my weaknesses and strengths (physical AND mental) are pointed out to me daily and corrected with patience and understanding. What's more, there has ALWAYS been someone of high rank or experience available to answer any question I might have at any given time. I can't say enough about how grateful I am to have met and trained with such an extraordinary man and group of people. Thank you DC Aikido!!!

Jonathan Lemmond: It has been almost two years since I started going to DC Aikido. I love it. I was nervous to start a martial art, but Sensei Michael Veltri, all of the instructors, and all of the students, make DC Aikido incredibly welcoming. I've befriended a great group of people, somehow now get along better with all of the other people in my life, and have gotten in great shape. Training at DC Aikido is tremendously fun.

Ronald Lloveras: I've been a member since August 2012 and I'm glad I took the time to visit/review/research all martial arts locations that are available in the DC area. I was very impressed by the dojo since I first stepped onto their mat. Everyone I met was friendly and very welcoming. After the two tutorial sessions with Charly, I knew that I was going to be a proud member of this dojo. The black belt instructors are great and the all the rest of the members are great as well. Unlike other places I've visited, I didn't feel intimidated by anyone at this dojo. Everyone wanted to help each other learn the techniques and the philosophy behind them. The dojo is clean and well kept. It is conveniently located across the Woodley Park metro and just a few miles by bike.

Jeannys Flamine NNEMNBENG (Jayjay86): I just came back from a trip to Japan that was organized by Michael Sensei . We spent (12 of us) 10 days in Okinawa during which we had the opportunity to receive teaching from Yamaguchi Sensei( Michael Sensei’s Sensei). It was not only a good opportunity for me to grow as an aikido practitioner but also to discover and deeply understand that the skills learned on the mats could be applied in each and every aspect of my life . The art itself, the people( my fellow classmate and of course our Japanese hosts) , the scenery , all contributed in way. They made this trip, my trip, a memorable experience. I tried my best to describe the emotions that I felt during this trip to Japan, but words won't be enough to convey the true meaning of what I experienced . It has to be lived. I hope you’ll be the next to go . I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed .
Response: AND, we are allll so glad you came Jeannys! Thank you for your dedication, commitment, and teamwork helping to make the trip such a great experience!

Christine Ju: We held our daughter's 7th birthday party at DC Aikido. Noah was wonderful to work with, and the price was very reasonable given what was included. They were very accommodating, and the kids seemed to have a great time. Thank you!

Shah Alom Khokon: Good for kids.

Yong Studios DC: what do users think?

J & C Caminos: Positive: Professionalism, ValueMy son has been going to Yong Studios for almost 5 years and he loves it!!! Master Kim is the best and so is Mr. Surage and the rest of the teaching team. They teach the kids discipline and focus and confidence. I would highly recommend Yong Studios for anyone that wants to learn Taekwondo in a great atmosphere!!!!

Ivan Moore: This is an amazing Taekwondo studio! My two sons and I took classes at Yong Studios over a number of years. The instructors are top notch and break down the difference kicks, punches, blocks, forms, etc. so they are easier to learn and you can develop good technique. They vary the different activities in different classes to keep it interesting. Their emphasis on physical fitness, stretching and mental focus helps their students. I love how they incorporate some kickboxing elements in their instruction, which results in even better self defense techniques. The instructors command respect, but have developed a real family friendly atmosphere. I have moved away from the DC area and Yong Studios is one of the things I miss the most! Tip: You really need to commit to coming to class at least 2-3 times per week to see the best results.

Jim LoScalzo: My kids have gone to Yong Studios for more than ten years—I can’t recommend them enough. Founder Master Kim and teacher Master Surage offer fun, empowering, no-nonsense training for a variety of ages. One aspect I find especially appealing: kids are required to leave the horseplay at the door. If you don’t behave, you get called out. Also, advanced belts do get to spare in full protective gear. For my kids, Taekwondo is now more than a martial art—it’s a lifestyle. And Yong Studios is more than a studio—it’s an institution.

Stefan Atev: Positive: Professionalism, QualityHave attended the studio for about 4 years with my middle-school aged son. Great instruction, varied classes, and continuous sparring. It's a more traditional Taekwondo school that does not shy away from hand techniques in sparring. The online classes have also worked great during the Covid lockdown.

David Blair: This is the first martial arts school I ever attended. I left the District ten years ago and have trained in more schools than I care to count, but this remains the unqualified gold standard by which I judge all others. No other school I have attended matches Yong Studios in the thoroughness or precision of the instruction. What sets Yong Studios apart, in my view, is that the instructors explicitly break down each technique into its constituent parts and explain how each part should be performed, and how it adds to the greater whole. Most instructors simply demonstrate a round kick once or twice and expect the students to replicate the movement. This leads to a lot of very, very sloppy technique, particularly among the lower belts. Yong Studios instructors explicitly perform each step of the technique and insist that students learn these steps individually before attempting to perform the entire movement. This means that learning each technique takes more time, but it also means that when the student learns a technique, he or she learns it correctly. I can assure you, that’s something that far too few studios can boast. As a wise man once said, if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.

Bill Peyser: I can’t say enough good things about Yong Studios. Master Kim and Master Surage have developed and sustained a fantastic Tae Kwon Do program grounded in friendship, respect, knowledge, honesty, discipline, and strength. These values are apparent in the way they run the studio and instruct the students. Yong Studios offers a great combination of traditional Tae Kwon Do along with practical sparring training. Even though repetition is key to learning, retaining, and perfecting martial arts skills, every class is unique and offers just the right balance of stretching and fitness training. Both masters have the unique ability to demonstrate techniques, break them down step-by-step, explain their rationale and application, and fold them into the curriculum. I highly recommend this studio to kids, teens, and adults.

Colin Bartley: Both instructures know their stuff. They work really hard with all ages and abilities. No nonsense, no goofing. It's not cheap, the more you go the more cost effective it becomes, but you really need to be going at least twice a week, and try and be consistent.

Maureen Javers: My son has been taking lessons for nearly three years and loves Yongs Studios. He is nine, a brown belt and excited to continue with Tae Kwon Do for as long as possible - he can't wait to be a possible teenage teacher/helper. The staff makes the sessions fun while also challenging. They truly get to know the students and do a great job with individual teaching, in a group setting.

Jada Fife: I've been at Yong Studios now for over seven years now. It feels like a second home to me. I would highly recommend others to practice here, especially teenagers. I started pretty late (I was 11) and I always felt like I belonged. Yong Studios was the perfect place for me to grow up. The masters not only taught me taekwondo, but also how to be confident, brave, and determined, as cliche as it sounds.

Shannon: Positive: Communication, Quality, ValueI mostly go to the Bethesda studio, but it's great to have the option of Tenleytown as well for if class times at Bethesda don't work with my schedule. The studio is conveniently located right across from the Metro and is a welcoming environment for new students.

BETA Academy: what do users think?

Ma D: Awesome place for beginners and advanced BJJ lovers. Very friendly people. Good technics. I highly recommended this place who visiting Washington DC also who decided to start practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Guys when you browsing different clubs with thoughts about what to choose please go there and you will meet really cool professional people. Good luck everyone. Oss.

Jack Cantlay: The instruction is top notch. Your instructors are amazing and follow a coherent system of training so that each week is a new thing. The gym culture is very friendly and welcoming but I still feel like I can get competitive live rolls. It really matters that your instructors are so friendly. That goes a long way. But they still push me! I love the balance.
Response: Thank you so much Jack, we appreciate that! We pride ourselves on our welcoming community and believe that a strong community fosters growth in our students.

Thuhuong Dao: - Coach to child ratio was excellent. - Coaches did a great job working the room and - working with each child/group. - Introduction/greet for my children’s first class was great and energetic. - Disciplining the students during class was thorough and appreciated. - Dismissal of students was organized (liked how the coach only let the kids go when he say the parents).
Response: HI there! Thank you so much for the review! We appreciate your feedback and we're so happy that you experienced the professionalism of our Kids' coaches!

Tara Trinity: Coach Carlos, coach D, everyone is amazing. We love Beta!!!! My son has come into an environment that supports him and is compassionate as well as disciplined. The diversity is something I was personally looking for, and that’s something that is even more a bonus.

Walter Bayer: Great place for all-levels of Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu enthusiasts. Very beginner-friendly with knowledgeable coaches who will patiently walk you through everything you need to know. After training here for a few sessions, you'll experience the great sense of community they foster. I loved that there was also a weight room to supplement training with strength & conditioning.

Tim .G: We were in DC on vacation and they welcomed us in for open mat, even stayed later to roll. Coach Gabriel was awesome. Awesome facility! Super friendly community! I definitely recommend!

Tyrone Calvin: I’m no strange to BETA academy and every time I go, I leave better than I arrived. Everyone is very friendly and professional. The Brazilian Ju Jitsu class is informative and state of the art in self defense.

CJ Francis: I love the welcoming culture, the high level and clarity of instruction, the daily availability of no gi classes as well as gi. Also the ample amount of time given for both drilling and sparring.

Saron Dessalegn: Friendly Coaches are willing to help and give good instructions!! Definitely recommend for a great education in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.
Response: Thank you so much Saron!

Amy Putens: In honesty we could not be more thrilled with our experience with BETA! We have been apart of the BETA community for approximately 2yrs. We started out just being an attendee of their summer program. After summer was over we would drive by often and my daughter would ask- "When do we get to go back to beta?" I knew then that this was where we needed to be. When you have a daughter (who is a girlie girlie) wanting to be apart of something so much bigger than Ballet or gymnastics I was sold. We then signed up for the after school program and we haven't turned back since. The excitement both my children have for their amazing staff and program is the reward for me at the end of the day. Having being I can trust in to guild my children down the right path and for my kids to respect them is 100% why we choose BETA!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU BETA! Thank you for all that you give!!!!!!
Response: Hi Amy, thank you so much for sharing your story with us! It makes us proud to have kids as enthusiastic and motivated as yours in our Kids Program!

Northeast Taekwondo: what do users think?

Jeff Hale: Excellent instructors! My on has been going to Tae Kwon Do here for maybe 4 years. It's a great community. Very welcoming of new folks.

Shani Dhani: This school is absolutely amazing. In the beginning, honestly, I had my doubts but I'm impressed I must say. They have lived up to the 5 stars plus. I've noticed my kid is much calmer and a bit more focused. Whereas he was once a Very active and off task kid. Amazing and All worth it.

Garner Marshall: I bring all of my children to learn Tae Kwon DO at this location. The instruction is phenomenal. They are very strict, sort of para-military. They instill values into the students. The instructors are very sincere. Great location. Worth every penny.

Julius Alston: While studying and practicing Tae Kwon Do under the tutelage of Master O'Kelly I was able to obtain my Black belt. The training as well as the experience I received has become an integral part of my character. I am would recommend the school to anyone . Through the journey of becoming a black belt I became a more confident in all my affairs. By practicing the 5 tenets of Tae Kwon Do I am able to navigate a more serene life. Thanks !

Anthony Lin: Very good instructors in my opinion! Also, sometimes games of dodge ball needed.

M B Delissaint: Awesome place to learn. They do well in balancing between strict regimenand and patience with young kids.

Zora Thompson: i'm a black belt, and I love it! I go twice a week!

Claudia Escobar: Great teachers and methods. Kids just loose to go and learn new techniques!

DC Self Defense Karate Assn.: what do users think?

Christina Sheraton: This place was a big let down. My two teenagers were not impressed by the instructor. 1st off the pics online are about 20 years old. So when you get there you're greeted by this older lady you weren't expecting. And that's the 2nd issue, the owner, Master Middleton, is in her 70's. It was like a senior citizen class. She said she teaches all the classes even though there is another instructor there who looks like he's in his 40's who we thought we were having class with. 3rd it was a red flag for me when I asked can we come and watch the regular classes and was told no. That's just suspicious to me. Any school that won't let you check out their classes, is a red flag.
Response: Our real students were shocked to hear ANY class at DCSDKA characterized as being like a senior citizen class. Nor is anyone told that they cannot watch our regular classes. We just encourage parents of young children to have their kids do a trial class rather than just watch, as some kids are intimidated by only watching. Trial classes are free--come and make your own judgement. Pics on our website are stock photos, not my past students. We have 5 instructors besides myself, but I am there for most classes. Also, I have not met a Christina Sheraton.

Gabriel Torres: I joined this school when I was about five years old I was a troubled kid in a difficult house hold. This place changed my life sensei Middleton is a saint. She teaches with love and passion. These negative reviews are appalling. This place teaches you self confidence and important lessons for life. Take a class and have fun learn skills and enjoy. Thank you sensei and sensei wolf id like to come visit the new dojo soon!
Response: Thank you Gabriel, and yes, love you lots! The passion is a blessing for me, and knowing y'all is my reward. Come visit us any time. Not much I can do about fake reviews--all from the same guy. But anyone can come and see for themselves. The new dojo has a beautiful wood floor and the upstairs gym is fully padded.

Aaron Williams: My son began his path here two years ago. I have to say, this has been a fantastic experience for us both. He looks forward to his training and practices constantly at home. Thank you Master Middleton for give this great learning environment for all people young and old.
Response: Once someone learns the discipline to practice on his own, he can apply that to school and whatever he takes on into adulthood, so I appreciate hearing this. I also love how courteous he is. Thanks!

nathan sarpal (PieEye): The teacher is nice and funny and I am able to learn a lot from her! It's definitely worth the price down to the last cent! They offer side programs that could help you exceed in the classes!
Response: Nathan, yes, and you certainly have the attitude and the drive to qualify for the Leadership or Black Belt Training programs. I'll discuss it with your Dad!

Stephania Gomez: DCSDKA has been the best investment for my son! They allow parents to participate alongside their children for the first few months to ensure the child adapts well. I was pleasantly surprised to know that my son was not only learning new technical skills, but was also being taught values and life lessons. The staff/instructions are very friendly, professional, organized, and thorough. I had tried two other martial arts organizations for my son but they always lacked structure and DCSDKA definitely has that! As far as the location I have lived in Brightwood for 25 years and was not pleased to see it being described as “ghetto”. The negative comments are simply not true. There is a fire station on the same block, plenty of parking. DC is a city where you will find a mix of businesses.I have never felt unsafe. Highly recommend!!
Response: Thanks Stephania! And yes all the stuff on the 1 star "reviews" are totally made up by a disgruntled ex-employee, but one cannot take those down, even though a court case showed those email addresses to be fake!

J. H.: Grandmaster Carol Middleton is an amazing martial arts and self-defense instructor. Her techniques are precise and expertly tailored to each situation a person might actually encounter in the real world. She and her staff also are excellent at communicating ways to improve to students, both young and old. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming (and clean)! We particularly love the way they teach children valuable life skills: how to be a good friend, how to be safe, and how to improve self-confidence and self-esteem. The karate lessons are just the icing on the cake. We highly recommend DC Karate and Self-defense for both kids and adults who want to improve discipline, defense and/or fitness. Having taught her own Martial Arts school for more than 45 years, she is incredibly competent and experienced. We love her values that are instilled in the school's motto of "discipline, respect and positive expectancy." I wouldn't trust any other dojo with my family's training.
Response: Aw, shucks. And I must say, the best part of teaching is having great students like you and yours!

Brian Frank: This has been one of the best investments in my daughters life and well-being. The courses taught not only self defense and karate, but how to raise a child to be strong, safe and confident. I take the classes alongside my daughter and plan to continue through the rest of my life. It has provided an invaluable bonding between me and my child. Don't believe the bad reviews. I was really surprised at some of them and can comment on a few. Classes are diverse, professional and well worth the money. There was never a time when a teacher didn't show up. Even when one was late, there are 2 other instructors or the Sensei to conduct the class. Sensei (Carol Middleton) is invested in every student and sits down with them to explain the course and how much it costs. I've never in my entire time there felt unsafe in the neighborhood and I do not live far from the dojo. This is a fantastic school and I wish I could give more stars. If you are interested, check it out because the first class or two are free.
Response: Thanks Brian. The bad reviews are from a guy I fired for stealing who promised then to put us out of business by making fake reviews that were real bad. None of it is true! Sensei

Justin Hunt: Great experience both for myself and for my family. We started with my son taking classes in the family class and I enjoyed it so much I later started the adult class. I have found it to be both a good workout and a challenging activity that I am improving at thanks to the instructors encouragement and ability to offer useful feedback. I also love the positivity of instruction and the life lessons Sensei does as part of the kids class, teaching self-respect, confidence and ways to deal with the challenges our kids face in school and the world.
Response: Thanks, Justin. We sure miss you guys but hope you are loving Australia!

itsfairgame: I'm very glad her studio has moved to Brightwood, NW . Its a good place to learn basics. For adults there are more appropriate instructors available I feel. I think signing a promissory note in advance for six month fees is a distraction. In my case I ended paying for no lessons because the class schedule change did not fit my new work schedule, so I think I was out 800.00. Think it through before joining.
Response: Promissory note? My students who lost their jobs got up to a year free!

Sarah Armstrong: I made multiple attempts to speak with someone over the phone, leaving several messages, all of which went unanswered. When I finally spoke with someone, I believe the owner, she was incredibly rude, she would not provide any information about the program cost structure. She also said they would NOT honor my Groupon offer which was purchased for karate lessons and is still valid. When I showed up for my appointment, it was in a house. Which is rather odd. I met with Carol who told me she runs the school. She still would not provide cost information, but considering I had my Groupon offer, I did not care. I already spent the money and at this stage simply wanted to get the lessons and be done with it. When I showed up for the class, the teacher never showed up. No one called me, and I was left waiting with several other students. When I asked them about this, they mentioned this happens frequently, either Carol is late or the other instructor, Sarah, doesn't show up at all. When I asked why, they said Carol is forgetful and Sarah doesn't care. I have no idea why anyone would pay for this type of service. I definitely will not return and have told my friends about this horrible experience.
Response: Hi Sarah, I finally discovered that my assistant was not getting the phone messages. I'm not sure who you eventually talked to, but the Intro appointments are always at the dojo, and although I wanted that Groupon taken down months ago, when it wasn't, I did honor it. I consider myself late if I am not 5 minutes early, and that has happened, but only once did the teacher not make it. It certainly is not the norm If that was the time you came, then I do apologize.

Tai Yim Kung Fu: what do users think?

Harry Nazarian: I love going here and enjoying the traditional teaching and learning of Kung Fu. The staff is great, the lessons are fun, and the workouts are amazing. Highly recommended if you're looking for a good martial arts and TaiChi school.

Don “Iron-Trainer” Niam: The best Kung Fu school in the US. I use to travel from Ohio to Maryland to train under Grandmaster Tai Yim. The school teaches all aspects of traditional Kung Fu including hand forms, weapons, light and full contact sparring, Lion dancing, Dragon dancing and tai chi. This system is taught in the pure form and is not watered down at all at Tai Yim Kung Fu. I highly recommend this school for anyone wanting to start a martial arts program for themselves or their kids.
Response: Thanks Don! Really appreciate your support and having you as a part of the Hung Fut Heritage and Family!

Alexandra & Jeremy: The whole family takes Kung Fu there. They have classes for adults and for children. It's a very family-friendly atmosphere with very warm people who run the studio. Sifu is a wonderful person and very warm and welcoming. The quality of teachers is high overall and there is a lot of accommodation for different levels of experience. Lester, who runs the children's class, is really magical with them. He is patient but motivating, and so warm and so kind. Our daughter really loves him and we really love what he does with the kids. The teachers for the adult classes are typically helpful and good. Sometimes there is a shortage of teachers when you are more beginner and need some extra help, and that can be a little frustrating, but overall it's a wonderful place to go to learn Kung Fu and it's a fun activity for the whole family.
Response: Thank You Alexandra and Jeremy! We look forward to having you in class again post-covid! In the meantime, please join us online via zoom! Check our website for details at Taiyimkungfu.com... Thanks Again! TYKF

Liz F: Have enjoyed taking Kung Fu here! My son loves the kid's classes too. Very welcoming, family oriented staff. Have never had a bad experience. Definitely recommend!!
Response: Thanks so much for the very kind words! We take great pride and pleasure when parents and their children bond through the benefits of the Hung Fut Kung Fu experience. We appreciate you!

John Ritz Miller: Hung Fut Kung Fu provides an incredible body balancing curriculum where Strength, Cardio and Flexibility automatically come into alignment facilitating weight loss and overall conditioning thru fun but challenging workouts. You get in shape without even realizing it! Great Place, Great People, Great Results!

MaganiaSoulHeart: I took lessons at this school for years when I was a child. I was a kid back then, wasn’t very mature, and resented being dragged there twice a week for lessons, and wanted out. I got what I wanted. But now, I feel like I’m more mature and remember all the great things about it, and want to go back somewhat. But it might be too late now. Sifu, Lester, everyone at Tai Yim, if you’re reading this, keep doing what you’re doing. You teach an amazing school and I miss you all. Anyone interested in this school, it is great and everyone there pushes you to do your best. They have lion dances, martial arts competitions, sparing, Tai Chi, and so much more. Don’t take it for granted like I did.
Response: Thanks so much for the very kind words! It is never too late to join us again! We will be opening post-covid as soon as possible, but in the meantime, we are offering virtual classes via zoom so that you can join from anywhere right now! Check our website: taiyimkungfu.com for class sign up info! TYKF

Brian Loebig: Very disappointed in the management of Tai Yim Kung Fu. My wife was deployed and we moved to a new house, but they refused to allow us out of the 12mo. contract or even pay a cancellation fee. Contracts without conscience equals cutthroat. They have not reached out to me yet as stated in their response. My son was a client so you've had my contact info...but since this was 4 years ago, it's really a bit late to try and resolve at this point.
Response: UPDATE: Brian, We see that you updated your review and corrected the name from Tai Lung to Tai Yim 2 days ago (based on our initial response), but you still have not accepted our invitation to call us so that we can address and resolve the issue for you. We reached out to you at the time of your initial review and multiple times over the past couple of years in an effort to resolve this and you remain unresponsive. Something seems amiss, as we always strive to work with our students to find a satisfactory resolution in the rare instance that there is a problem, and we remain committed to do so now. Please call us at 301-889-1428 and we will gladly work with you to understand and solution your concerns. Thanks so Much! TYKF OUR INITIAL RESPONSE: We are very sorry to read this post as it is extremely rare for us to have any dissatisfied customers or students. We are also concerned that the post may be in error as you reference Tai Lung. We are the Tai Yim Kung Fu School. We have attempted to reach out to you multiple times so that we may confirm and better understand the issue. We invite you to call us at 301-889-1428 so that we might have the opportunity to work together to resolve any valid concern. Thanks so much! TYKF

Mieu Lee: Authentic Southern Style Hung Fut Kung Fu! There are imitators but no one can come close to Tai Yim Kung Fu! Great for self defense and discipline!
Response: Thanks so much Mieu! Really GREAT seeing you on the zoom classes!

Torre Halscott: Fantastic training in many forms of traditional Shaolin kung fu. Highly recommend it!
Response: Thanks Torre!! Please join us for online zoom classes. Check the website for the schedule!

Kevin Lyles: Very authentic, traditional and family oriented. I moved an hour and a half away and still makes the drive. True quality kung fu
Response: So delighted to have you as part of our family Kevin. Thanks so much for your commitment to the school!

Full Circle Martial Arts Academy: what do users think?

Shai Henderson: One of the greatest decisions of my life was to join the Combat Kuntao program here at Full Circle Martial Arts Academy. I have learned so much more than just the physical aspect of martial arts and it shows in my day to day life. The family environment and the genuine people is what captured me first, everything else is just a SWEET bonus!

Carene Simon: Full Circle Martial Arts Academy provides an amazing program for the community! The staff and instructors foster a family atmosphere that is welcoming and friendly. They are very professional and teach respect and self confidence. I highly recommend this school. Plus, they are COVID-19 conscious.

Rob Smith: Having been involved with martial arts prior to being introduced with Full Circle, I had a subconscious expectation all martial arts training being somewhat the same. Any notion I previously had has been far, far exceeded!! The focus on all participants having a high level of moral values, respect for all people as well as respect for martial arts, the intentionality around family/ the spirit of family being a cornerstone of that community and the community at large, the commitment to young people being molded into well-disciplined, respectful, intelligent, strong citizens, all those characteristics and more, have made the Full Circle environment a place that I trust having my family develop, fellowship, and interact on many levels. Great, highly recommended institution!!

Azeb Kinder: When I visited Full Circle in February (2020) , I was apprehensive about taking up martial arts at my age and with no experience. During that first visit everyone was so warm and welcoming, they answered all of my questions and made me feel comfortable and confident. I’ve been training with them ever since. Grand Master Scott and the Guros are amazing instructors and it truly feels like family!

Lionel Walker: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueMy experience at Full Circle has been phenomenal! When they say, "Welcome to the family!", it's not just a cliché. They actually mean it! From the top down to the students, everyone is courteous and positive. Full Circle is hands down the best Martial Arts Academy in town!

Diane Cannon: My son have been attending Full Circle Martial Art twice week for a years and he has been doing well. It was a family decision to put my son into martial arts program so he could learn how to protect himself and build up his confidence. Full Circle has met all my expectation for my son. There are professional people work there and a great men and women who are good mentors for young people. I will be looking into summer camp for my daughter. I do recommend this school for any child.

Smooth Rebel: I've been a student at Full Circle Martial Arts Academy for since 2015. I'm glad I attend such a wonderful school. It's more than a school it's my extended family. I love everything about it, the instructions from GM Samuel Scott, my Guros, classmates, and the family atmosphere. We all learn from each other and there is plenty of support on & off the mat. I'm learning discipline, leadership skills, how to defend myself and much more. Since I've been attending I'm more confident, aware of my surroundings, patient, stronger mentality & physically. I recommend my school to everyone that want to defend themselves and their family. You will also build your character. Check us out, you won't regret it!

Valencia Robinson: Awesome place to grow not only in the martial arts but personally! My girls grew up in Full Circle - both Blackbelts - and I've had the opportunity to watch many kids as young as 4 grow and eventually earn their Black belts as well ... Truly a family environment and a school that is actively involved in the community ... Plus the staff, instructors, and owner are genuinely nice! Highly recommend Full Circle as a great choice for martial art training!

Shanietta Muhammad: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueI love Full Circle Martial Arts Academy. From the moment you walk in it feels like family. The instructors are GREAT and the atmosphere is very nurturing. My only regret is not bringing my family there sooner.

Hope Cruz Clark: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueFull Circle is for everyone - young and old, male or female. They do not just teach self-defense, but they also help builds self-esteem and grow leaders. The school is a family atmosphere and the owner consistently gives back to the community. Check them out and I promise that you will be glad that you did.

Wu Shen Tao Tai Chi: what do users think?

Evan Colton: I decided to try Tai Chi for both its health benefits and for its fun self defense/ martial arts side. After several months at this school, I can say I definitely made a good choice. Paul Ramos is a masterful teacher of Tai Chi, as well as other internal martial arts. The community of students and assistant instructors at Wu Shen Tao is also a lovely collection of people. I've loved martial arts for my whole life, and despite studying many styles with many teachers over the years, I have never found a teacher or a school that felt so right.

David Noto: I've been taking Tai Chi classes at Wu Shen Tao for almost 4 years now, and I have enjoyed it immensely. Paul is a meticulous teacher with outstanding knowledge and experience. A lot of people seem have preconceived notions that Tai Chi is some sort of Chinese equivalent to yoga, for old people with bad knees to do to improve their balance. A few weeks of classes at Wu Shen Tao ought to dispel that notion forever. Paul teaches Tai Chi as a martial art and works in all sorts of applications to the different forms. Its very helpful to understand why you need to perform a certain maneuver just so, once you see the application for it. Expect to work up a good sweat, be willing to learn and you will have a great time.

Linda Krakaur, PhD: Paul is a Master Teacher. He is kind, generous, specific, inspiring, and maintains high standards while also communicating that he believes everyone can grow. Paul believes in good form which will allow us to elevate our capacity physically, spiritually, and mentally. I entered his class two years ago with a bad back, two bad knees, and a torn tendon in my shoulder. I am now in the best shape of my life, and I have greater skills to access in all aspects of my life outside of tai chi. As for the post by Emily, as an eye witness to the events, I would say that is an inaccurate representation of the said events. Paul was trying to be helpful as were many of his students. Unfortunately Emily was out of control and lost her sense or propriety. The outbursts in a middle of a class where other people are trying to heal were completely uncalled for, and everyone was shaken by the loud and disruptive nature of her behavior. There are much better ways to resolve disagreements. If Emily had stayed long enough, she may have discovered them.

Andrea Koo: Paul Ramos, the head sifu of the Wu Shen Tao school, to me is a hidden gem in Takoma Park. It's unassuming outward appearance, is really a force in the tai-chi and martial arts community. Paul is full of knowledge on martial arts and goes into great details on the forms with dedication. His philosophies are imparted on more senior students who carry the rigor as Paul. The Wu Shen Tao community fostered by Paul has students of all levels helping one another in various forms from beginning to more advanced forms. It's the place to be for those who are martial arts enthusiasts - in particular, tai-chi!

Emily Prince: Perhaps this is great studio for some, but if you have physical disabilities, this is not the studio for you. If you are trans, this is *explicitly* not the place for you. Sifu Paul Ramos called me a “primadonna” for respecting the limits my physical therapist had suggested given severe muscular issues. That alone would be rude, but sometimes people are rude. However, something to consider if you have injuries or disabilities that prevent you from moving in the way he expects you to be able to move. Sifu Paul Ramos, also, in what was simultaneously to my novice eyes a masterstroke of tàijíquán and literally illegal, said this to me as I was angrily explaining to him that he violated MD law governing public accommodations for trans people by repeatedly referring to me, a very femme trans woman, as male on three out of the four times I attended. If it weren’t illegal, it would have been excellent technique; redirecting my anger back at me towards a vulnerability he knew I had about my physical impairment. Then, as my anger grew, he passive-aggressively wished me well “with the chip on my shoulder.” Again, excellent technique. The classes seemed nice and generally very accessible to beginners such as myself, so maybe it’s the right place for you. It grieves me that Sifu Paul Ramos went out of his way to ensure it was not the right place for me.

Mike Fisher: Very good quality instruction. Substance over flash.

А «Дрон» Р: excellent professional mentor, friendly atmosphere

Fort Washington United: what do users think?

Esha: This is my son's first year attending FWU and I couldn't be more excited and blessed for my son to work with such a professional and polite staff. My son's tutor Ms. Nicole has worked tirelessly to make sure he not only stays on task for his grade level goals but that he also exceeds them.🙌🏽 My son also has some amazing coaches that are not only helping to teach him the various skills and techniques associated with MMA but they also teach him discipline, respect, and teamwork.😉 FWU has mastered the recipe for developing successful students and I'm glad my son is one of them.😊

Willie Hicks: Hope this review helps anyone on the fence……..our son is an energetic (kid has a lithium Ion Tesla battery), rambunctious, 100% boy. We love him to pieces but noticed his weight was slowly creeping up, his attention span, and listening skills weren’t where we wanted them to be. We wanted to be proactive and get him into a disciplined environment while also increasing his physical activity. We researched different Martial Arts Academy’s in the Fort Washington area and came across Fort Washington United. We initially called in January 2021 and spoke with Nicole. Within a week we decided to bring our son in for a trial class. The atmosphere and environment was very welcoming. The staff stopped what they were doing to invite us in, take us on a tour, and answer the zillion questions we had. Our son immediately fell in love with the class and was a participant 4-5 times a week in the evenings and on Saturday’s. Fast forward to the Spring and we were prompted with the decision to do the traditional Summer Camp for our son, or enroll him in the Summer Program offered at Fort Washington United. We are so glad we went with FWU. Our son (who turned 6 in May) has progressed immensely in the areas of reading, problem solving, communication, public speaking, water safety (swimming), and leadership. The lessons and principles instilled by the staff has turned our son into a responsible, respectful natural leader who can also throw a hell of a punch and follow with a roundhouse kick, but will also help an old lady across the street……..AWESOME STAFF! AWESOME MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM! Can’t say enough great things……wish I could give them 10 STARS!

Kisha DeSandies Lester: Earlier this spring, I was looking for a martial arts academy for my five year old son, who was about to start kindergarten. My husband and I wanted to help him get used to being about other kids, since he had been in quarantine for over a year with little to no other time to play with kids his age. We also wanted to instill confidence, respect and self-control and believe that mixed martial arts is a good way to achieve that. I had planned on starting our son in a program in the fall, but as I looked for summer camp programs, I discovered Fort Washington United (FWU). Initially, we wanted to make sure that our son could keep up with the summer program and the evening classes. The staff was great is working with us and our son to assess his ability and we were able to register him for 5-6 weeks of summer camp and the daily martial arts classes. Our son LOVES FWU! He enjoys the structure and working with the coaches and all of the moves that he learns each week. He also is making friends with the other students. Because our son doesn’t attend school nearby, we are not enrolled in the after school program, but we would if we could. Martial arts has given our son confidence and he’s excited to practice his moves at home to anyone who will watch! The summer camp was simply phenomenal! Our son loved the weekly themes, lessons and field trips they went on. The coaches taught the kids important values and taught them how to speak up, be respectful, be responsible, and be a good citizen of the academy. We also loved how the kids worked in teams, by age and presented their projects each week. We were blown away that our 5-year-old was doing PowerPoint presentations and building airplanes and coming up with business plans. There is also a wonderful education track during the summer camp week and after-school program to help keep your child learning at their grade level and beyond (if they are able to). This summer camp also prepared him for the social aspects of kindergarten (eating lunch, playing with others, transitions to different activities, keeping up with your personal items, etc.) I read a review about how this program may not be for younger kids. I would say that it would depend on the child. My son has thrived at FWU. He was one of the youngest kids in the summer program and he did great! He also is inspired and motivated by the older kids, and teens who help with the summer camp. I also think that a lot of our kids need to get a little real-world consequences for their actions when they don’t follow the rules. My son is motivated by that and the point system is an appropriate tool in the academy setting. He doesn’t like losing points because other kids on his team aren’t listening, so he tries to be a leader and example, which we like to see. Overall, I have and will continue to recommend FMU to parents. It’s a safe and nurturing place to have your kids. The staff (Steve, Nicole, Karen, Jason, Charles) are all upbeat and keep you informed on what’s going on. I love how Coaches Jason and Charles are with my son and all the kids. We love that Steve and Nicole are veterans and they have made the decision to pour into the lives of kids. Karen is always helpful, pleasant and supportive every time I see her. My husband and I have been really happy with the decision to enroll our son in this program.

Nat Geary: I've trained at UMAA since September 2018, and since then, my growth has been immense. If you're into challenging workouts, this place has you covered (I am down 40 lbs and keeping the weight off). If you're looking for fulfilling afterschool programs for children, this place is dedicated to both mental and physical success, with tutoring and homework support to go along with martial arts instruction. If you are interested in setting and achieving personal goals, I can personally attest that this gym has helped me reach new heights. I never saw myself winning a grappling tournament, but the coaches, staff, and teammates made that a reality. I cannot recommend this place enough . From ownership down to students, this place is all class. It is more than just a gym, it is a community hub.

Dawn Washington: I am the mom of a special needs child. I was very hesitant to put him in martial arts. I’m glad we did, best decision we ever made! Grappling and striking have boosted my sons self esteem. During summer camp, the group went on museum tours. Each week had a educational theme. They learned coding, finance principles and received points for each book they read over the summer. The points could be used for toys and games. Now that school has started, the focus is on homework. I worried the staff wouldn’t be one on one with my son for his studies so I didn’t bother sending his homework. Imagine my surprise when his teacher sent multiplication homework home and my son already knew it! He’d work with staff using Kahn academy. Great place, great staff!!!

Jazmin Simms: I highly recommend UMAA. My son Mason has attended the after school program for almost 2 years now and I could not be more thankful to the coaches and staff. Since attending, Mason has become a lot more confident, disciplined and an overall better student. The coaches and staff care a lot about the kids and always go the extra mile to help whether it’s with training or homework.

Steven Hoang: The United Martial Arts Academy has classes for the entire family! The classes are great for people of all ages that want to learn top rated self defense and get fit! The kids have a ton of fun during classes! I would recommend this gym to anyone again and again!

Charmicielle Goodine: This establishment does not know how to handle primary children. The punishment for a 5 year old should not be the same for a 12 year old. The point system that the children are on is very subjective. And thinking that a 5 year old should have the same responsibility as a 12 year is ridiculous. It is probably a great establishment for older students but not for younger children.

fairlane urbina: My son goes to UMAA to their after school program. The coach never misses a day to update us that my son got picked from school, in the van and when they’re in school. We celebrated my son’s 11th birthday at UMAA and the theme was Nerf Blast. The party was a “BLAST” all kids had a great time and the staffs did a “BLAST” job! I highly recommend this school. Not only they love what they do, but they care the well being of their students.

Jaquan Butler: United Martial Arts Academy is great environment to build a foundation for martial arts. With a diligent staff and wonderful community it is an excellent environment for learning, guaranteed to instill the calmness and confidence needed to succeed.
