Washington Photo Focus: what do users think?

Carolina Franco: I took Eliot’s introductory DSLR course online via zoom and it was very convenient to be able to attend the lessons from my own living room. I had a little experience with slr photography several years ago but not much experience with my new dslr camera. Other people in the class had no photography experience at all. The small class size gave lots of opportunities to ask questions, and Eliot also gave feedback on the photographs of each of the students. Overall I learned a lot about how to use my camera, and don’t think I’ll be using the auto exposure anymore. Hope to take other courses with Eliot in the future.
Response: Thanks Carolina. It was great working with you - and very nice images that you shared. Looking forward to more classes together.

Paul Kissel: I took two of Eliot's classes after finding him at the Smithsonian. His level of expertise and style of instruction are both thorough and proficient. He has a very nice demeanor and patience to explain complicated processes and techniques. He also offers a great value when compared to other courses on the same topic. I recommend anyone interested in digital photography editing to consider Eliot as an instructor.

Maria Peña: I stumbled upon Eliot´s photography classes through another website and I decided to give it a try. I´m glad I took the class, as Eliot took the fear out of using the many features on my camera, past the auto or program modes! He has a great ability to explain complex processes in a very simple manner, blending in personal anecdotes and amazing artistry. From the very first class, he shows great passion for this craft, which is very contagious! I´ll sign up for more classes down the road, and I´d recommend that you do, too!
Response: Thanks Maria. I'm so glad the class was all you hoped it would be. I'll look forward to sharing more about photography with you in another class.

Lou Kaufman: I have known Eliot since taking several Photoshop courses when he taught at the Smithsonian. He is an excellent photographer and mentor. I've been on several of his workshops and have thoroughly enjoyed them and learned a 'ton' in each one. He has a wonderful way of teaching all things photographic, especially Lightroom and Photoshop. I plan to attend another of his workshops at Zion National Park in March 2015. If you want to improve your photographic skills and post-processing skills, I can't recommend Eliot highly enough.

Cynthia Corio-Poli: My three session class with Eliot of Washington Photo Focus was just what I needed to clear up some of the mystery of digital photography. Eliot is a terrific teacher, very patient, and always answering questions to make the experience a worthwhile pleasure. I look forward to continuing.

Peter Foiles: I have worked with Eliot for over a year and he has a wonderful way of blending artistry and technique in an understandable way, a great mentor.

Manuel Corday: I have taken several of Eliot's classes and love the way he can take a difficult process and make it easy to understand. I would recommend his classes!
Response: Thanks Manny. That's very kind. It's always nice for me to work with people who have the motivation that you have.

David Spanburg: Eliot is a great instructor and photographer.

Capital Photography Center: what do users think?

Diane Donnelly: I have taken a few classes at Capital Photography Center and can say each class exceeded my expectations. Today I took Marie Joabar's Lightroom Library class and it was exceptional. Marie walked us step by step from taking your photo from your computer to importing it into Lightroom then organizing them in an efficient manner. We learned several techniques on how to rate photos and how to locate them when you need to find them. If you are interested in Lightroom and what it can do for you, this class is an absolute must. Thanks, Marie.
Response: It was great having you in the class Diane and I'm thrilled that you came away with more confidence to use Lightroom. Thanks for the kind words about the class and for taking the time to post your feedback.

Gary Stanley: Capital Photography Center is one of Washington's most valuable photography resources. Marie Joabar and her colleagues not only organize great workshops, but they are also a great help by providing one-on-one instruction and serving generally as a network facilitator among Washington photographers.
Response: Thanks for the kind words Gary! It's always a pleasure working with those that want to perfect their skills or just need some guidance getting over the hurdles.

Mo: I decided to take a class on how to use external flash. It was a last minute decision and they were able to accommodate me. The class was great and very informative. Corey the instructor took our questions and guided us through different exercises. I learned a lot and feel more confident in my skills!
Response: Mohammed, thank you for the great review. We're so glad you learned a lot at the class and have more confidence now.

Damon Bowe Photography: what do users think?

Lisa L: WOW! Just WOW! Had to schedule a graduation photo shoot from Texas for my daughter in DC. Not only did Damon make every step so easy but after talking with him on the phone and getting to know him a bit I was even more excited to work with him. He is exceptional...Literally, no other way to describe him. His work style, sense of humor, creativity, patience, you name it are all incredible. The pics we received were outstanding too! Keep in mind that we had no easy task for him... juggling a blended family, a morning when bad weather threatened and a senior pup, he juggled it all effortlessly and made for one of the best and most fun photo sessions I have ever been a part of. I had initially chosen Damon based on the ratings on here and boy they did not let me down. If you are looking for someone with imagination, great communication and a fantastic eye for capturing a special moment in your life book Damon now!!! You will NOT regret it! I only regret that he is so far away from us in Texas..... :)

Ashlei Watson: It was great working with Damon! I knew he was the photographer I wanted to work with for my organization when I submitted a quote, and he in return called me and we talked for about 20 minutes about great advocacy looking locations in DC! He then sent over a map with details on possible photo shoot locations, gave suggestions on transportation, etc. He promised he would deliver on the product that I wanted for our organization and he did not fail!! He was patient with us, treated our children nice, and captured a lifetime of memories for our families and organization. You won't go wrong working with Damon!!
Response: Wow, thank you so much! Our original shooting plan was pretty good, but I'm so happy the Capitol Fencing happened to be removed just before your photoshoot because it allowed us a bit more leeway. Thanks again and please let me know if you ever need more photo help! :)

Iris Hinh: My partner and I were looking for a photographer in Washington, D.C. to capture our graduation photos. I initially found Damon's website on Google and loved the variety of photographs that have been shared on the platform. I contacted Damon via email and phone call to ask questions, and he was very responsive and friendly. It rained the evening before the photoshoot, and the cherry blossoms weren't as lively as we had hoped. Damon contacted us to share his thoughts on the best locations near the mall, including proposing the Smithsonian garden. Damon was patient and kept the whole shoot fun. We really enjoyed the whole experience. From the onset, the contract, details, and follow-up were straight forward very professional. This was our first time taking photos with a photographer, and we would highly recommend him for any and all photography needs!

Brittany Kademian: I'm so glad we booked a cherry blossoms mini session with Damon! He's super down to earth, is great with young kids since he has some of his own, and even gave us a full hour taking great photos instead of the 20 minutes we expected. There were so many good photos that I had a hard time choosing which pictures to keep, and just ended up buying them all. Damon was so easy to work with, and I hope that he will continue mini photo sessions of our family around DC a couple times a year!
Response: Thanks so much! Sometimes it takes longer to work with kids, I try to be generous with my time if I can, glad it worked out and we got some wonderful photographs!

Margie Dwight: Damon Bowe is an incredibly talented photographer! I arrived for my headshot session and he was friendly, accommodating and explained the whole process to me as this was my first headshot experience. Although admittedly self conscious, Damon talked me through as he was taking photographs. We looked at photos together and decided whether to take more or whether we had winners. He was encouraging and enthusiastic. He captured my image and most of all, captured my essence. I felt really good after the session and felt confident that the photo we decided upon was the best to present to the world. I cannot recommend Damon highly enough. I will definitely call upon his talents in the future. He also couldn’t have been nicer! You are in very capable, experienced and gifted hands with Damon!
Response: Thanks Margie! It was so fun meeting you and doing headshots. Looking forward to a branding session in the future!

Lauren Vorisek: Although I was initially a bit skeptical about getting professional headshots taken as I embarked on a career change, I quickly realized how valuable a good photographer is. Damon was not only friendly and professional, but he has great advice about angles and how to pose. He was able to help me pull off that illusive mix of appearing confident without seeming cocky, and serious yet approachable. Damon has a great eye for detail and he has the patience to help steer you to the perfect look. I couldn’t be happier with the results. The hardest part was picking my favorite look.

Jilane Rodgers Petrie: We recently had a fantastic experience with Damon for our family's holiday card mini-session! Our toddler is a joyous little human, but for some reason gets very camera shy. Damon expertly captured our little guy in peak happiness, and mom and dad (and even dog!) somehow all looked great too. Damon was easy to book, gave clear communications and was super efficient during the shoot. We got a lot of amazing images at an incredibly reasonable rate. Our family will be repeat customers, that's for sure! Thank you, Damon!
Response: Thank you so much, Jilane. It was a pleasure to work/play with you guys, cannot wait to do it again!

Heather Lorenzo: This was our first time taking photos as a family of four and we loved working with Damon! He was very responsive ahead of time, giving us tips about what to bring and where to be and when. During the shoot, he knew just where to take us and gave us quick and simple directions to help get natural looking shots with a beautiful background. He's also quick on his feet -- cold rain started coming down during our shoot and yet Damon was able to get some snaps of the kids smiling under the shield of some trees that we'll cherish for a lifetime. For anyone looking for a photographer on the Hill or in the DC area, we highly recommend him.

Jeff Le: Damon has such attention to detail and a passion to capture the best in you. I found the experience so positive. Unlike other photography experiences, he helped me feel at ease, explained what we were trying to achieve, and did it with both grace and humor. That's hard to come by in DC and I loved my photos. I know you will too.
Response: Thanks so much, Jeff! Always great to see you!

Shermineh Jones: My family had a terrific experience with Damon and are absolutely thrilled with the photographs from our fall photo session. I was nervous about picking the right photographer because I have toddler twins - one who is shy around new people and another who'd rather play tag than sit for a photo (not to mention a camera shy dad). Based on great word of mouth from the other mothers in my neighborhood, I chose Damon and I am so glad I did. He made my kids totally comfortable and he knew exactly where to get the best shots around the Capitol so everyone was engaged and had fun. We spent less than half an hour together and I got lots of terrific photographs to choose from (many more than I expected). I highly recommend Damon and plan on having him take our family photos again next year.

Lincoln Photography: what do users think?

District Biscuit: I hired Rachel for my company last weekend and am so glad I choose her. I was shopping around and had different options but Rachel was responsive and had a portfolio that impressed me. She communicated before and after the shoot, was on-time, professional and friendly. The photos are outstanding and I plan to use her again. As a small business owner, I know that finding the right people and be hard, I am lucky to have a great photographer in my network.

Nicholas Battaglia: My fiance found Rachel for our engagement photos. Her prices are very reasonable, she was a joy to work with for the actual shoot, and promptly got our pictures back to us, not to mention the photos were wonderful.

Valerie Edwards: Rachel is the most talented photographer and we could not be happier with her work. She was easy to work with, has a fantastic eye, and the finished product exceeded our expectations for our company's photos. Rachel was easy to schedule, and prompt in all aspects. I've worked with many photographers in DC, especially having worked in politics, and Rachel is by far the best I have seen. She has completely impressed me with her versatility -- she can do family portraits, weddings, corporate, and events. We are so pleased we found Rachel and recommend her with 5 stars!

Dan Goodman: I chose Lincoln Photography for my professional head shot because of the outstanding reviews on Google and Yelp and reasonable rates. It was a great decision. Rachel is really easy to work with and takes fantastic pictures. I chose the mini session, which was perfect for me. In a surprisingly short amount of time, she was able to guide me through a wide variety of angles and perspectives for me to choose from, and she took the time to arrange the proofs with her favorites on top.

justmejune22: Rachel is the best photographer you can find. She is energetic, very professional and she takes fantastic pictures. Our family had a photo session with her and despite the fact that we have a very energetic toddler and a 4 months old, she managed to capture some awesome, spontaneous pictures. Highly recommend!

Rachel Gonçalves: Rachel Lincoln is one of the best photographers I worked with. She is very sensitive to subtly changes on facial expressions and/or the environment. Great professional!

Arvin Vohra: I've used Lincoln Photography for both politics and businesses photographs. The results have been excellent, both in terms of their aesthetic and technical qualities. The turnaround time is also much faster than most other photography services, and prices are more than fair.

Billy R: Rachel has a talent for capturing the right moment. She is flexible and patient. Her knowledge of the Washington D.C. area saved me a lot of time when deciding where to shoot. I will certainly do business with her again!

Corcoran School of the Arts & Design at GW: what do users think?

Hilda Kroll: The current exhibit has some very interesting photos, paintings, and sculpture. It would have helped so much to have some information about the pieces.

Austin Graff: The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design is in the old Corcoran Museum flanking the Executive Building by the White House. It's centrally located in Washington, D.C and a beautiful space. It's in an old building set up like a museum making the school's art shows out of this world. There are spiraling staircases, courtyards and room after room of beautifully designed art. If you get invited to an event here, say yes!

Gigi G.: Attended a graduate open house and learn a lot about the program and met some staff of other programs and they were fabulous to hear from.

Yesica Suarez: Architecturally, the buildong is awe inspiring. I think it really captures your eyes. The exhibitions for the Lone Prairie, Breaking Cultural Boundaries, Cartoons and the Color exhibitions were interesting. They definitely were trying to tell a meaningful story. I think the cartoon exhibit was successfully set up, but the others needed more content and guidance to trully unfold. There's ton of space to work with in the building so it needed to be used effectively so it wouldn't feel empty

Luis B: Corcoran School is mainly focused on promoting the arts. Friends of mine who have attended the college have had both good and bad things to say based on their experiences. One of the pros of the school is the events and gallery showings that often take place within it's walls. If you're a DC native, or city walker, you may want to check up on Corcoran and see what's going on from time to time.

Asad Jan: The Corcoran Gallery of Art was an art museum in Washington, D.C. Prior to its closing, it was one of the oldest privately supported cultural institutions in the United States capital. Starting in 1890, a museum school, later known as the Corcoran College of Art + Design, co-existed with the gallery. The museum's main focus was American art. In 2014, after decades of financial problems, the Corcoran entered into an agreement with the National Gallery of Art (NGA) and the George Washington University whereby almost all of the gallery's 17,000 work collection was placed under the care of the NGA, while the school and historic 17th street gallery building continued operations as a part of the George Washington University's new Corcoran School of the Arts and Design.

Yaser AlSaghrji: One of the architectural gems of the Nation Capital

Es K: Saw a phenomenal end of year exhibit some years ago

Nik Novakkain: So much talent and this is one of the best schools/museum

Arnold Thomas Bigger: Course selection is very good; faculty and staff are very good; and general vibe is good.

Smithsonian Associates: what do users think?

Bec215 H.: One of my earliest memories is a behind the scenes tour of the Smithsonian natural history museum at age 5. Still love the museums, but the Resident Associates programs are an amazing way to add a new dimension to life-long learning, beyond reading books or watching videos. The pandemic has made far more events accessible to us, as all content has moved to Zoom, and I hope the SA leadership will recognize the value of continuing to offer virtual programming beyond the pandemic time. As for content, we've enjoyed everything from a lecture on Mongolian history we attended a few months prior to our trip to Mongolia to beginning drawing, to a lecture on the history of American food culture since 1850. My mom is 75 and disabled, but still curious about the world and wanting to learn, and she loves loves loves these events - it gives her new things to learn and piques her curiosity about the world, and also gives her things to talk about with family and friends that enrich her social life. I've noted the lack of cultural diversity especially in the history/literature-related programming, and would like to see more Asian history and arts content. For me the issue of content diversity is separate from the value the content that they produce and the quality of it, which so far has been nothing but outstanding. Engagement is what motivates change, so I hope as membership grows and diversity expands, so will their programming.

Jennifer Gelman: My husband and I have been members of the Smithsonian Associates for quite a few years now. We almost always enjoy the programs and trips, although a few have been duds. Tonight's program was celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Sound of Music. You can attend programs without being a member, but members get discounts on all of the programs. Many of the lectures are at the Ripley Center (where the African and Asian art museums are). The lecturers are experts in their fields.

Kenya Allmond: I've attended many of the Smithsonian Associates programs over the years. They are always informative and engaging. One of my favorite programs featured an astronomer who. along with his team, examines the sky in famous paintings and could tell you the day in history that the paintings were composed. It was an excellent melding of arts and sciences.

Julia Thomas: Registered for online classes but they've been sending the zoom links to someone else's email address. Missed the classes. Customer service of no help. Wasted $200.

Eric Epstein: We have been museum members for almost 20 years. We love the culture, the talks and experience.

Georgette Dorn: Tried to through by phone or email to ask for information about Studio Art classes. No luck. Website and phone tree most unhelpful.

Bikramjeet Singh: If it will be live video then it will be awesome

Jim Blount: Awesome history of the great USA. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
