International Language Institute: what do users think?

keith o'connor: We went though Caribou for our refinancing and our experience was great thanks to Daniel Schoonmaker! He was very helpful and kept us updated on our status through email, text, and phone calls. If we had any questions he would get back to us fast with answers. He was awesome!

C D: I did not get the level of instruction I expected. While my instructor was a nice person, I expected the beginner class to build vocabulary and grammar, however we rapidly advanced beyond the basics. When discussing the class with a fellow student, he said he was having difficulty and he studied the same language in college. Ultimately, the final day of class came and only myself and another student showed up for the “final.” When I requested I discount to repeat the beginner course, I was told there are no refunds or discounts. I understand we are still working in Covid limitations and business isn’t quite what it was beforehand, but providing subpar instruction and effectively telling me to “deal with it”, is bad business. The instructor even told us the faculty told them to slow down, so they were aware it wasn’t proceeding effectively. I’ll be continuing my instruction with another provider.

Aurelia K: I've taken several Persian classes with ILI over the past 6 months and I recommend them. The Persian instructor is fantastic, as are the remote training capabilities. Classes start and end on time, and the time we do have is used to the fullest so I get my money's worth. I like that the class sizes are small enough that I get individual attention. I will say that you should be confident about the level you are signing up for - I find that some students will sign up for more advanced levels than they should, but that's not ILI's fault. Finally, the coordination is smooth and it's easy to contact Jane with issues or concerns. I'll be continuing to use ILI for my Persian learning in the future!

Monir Salim: I like the school very much. All of the teachers are very knowledgeable, friendly and cooperative. The educational environment for the international student is very positive. I miss my teachers. Jim & Jena are very good instructor for TOEFL preparation class. Bethany, Bonnie, Jennifer and Cloudia are also so good in the school management.

Fox World: Disclaimer: This is not my entire review. This is only part 1. I recently paid this organization $200 to take their Spanish proficiency exams(speaking, listening, reading, and writing). I have independently studied and spoken Spanish for almost 5 years now. I have taken 2 Spanish 1 courses. One for Freshman high school and the other for Freshman college. I received an A for both of these Courses. One of the stipulations to take the Spanish 1 course in college was to pass a Spanish Placement test and I scored off the charts. The highest class they had was Spanish 4 but the only class that was availible was Spanish 1 due to lack of enrollment. I already knew I was fluent in Spanish before I took this exam. I also speak multiple other languages, including French, Chinese, Egyptian Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Swahili, Yoruba, Seminole, Samoan, Hebrew, and Brazillian Porteguese. While none of them are as fluent as my Spanish, I am progressing towards this level of fluency and higher. I figured I would get the equivalent of at least a C1 on the CEFR scale for all of the tests I took. I was very unsatisfied with the results I received. I know for a fact that the results of my exams had been altered due to unjustified, ruthless, disgusting hatred, jealousy, and bias towards my Beautiful Rich Brown Skin, my Profundly Deep Rich Brown Eyes, my powerful royal Alkebulanian and Native American ancestery, my strong life giving, Woman gender, my Opulent Muslim Niqab, my genetic and aquired intelligence, my knowledge of other languages, my impeccable Spanish accent, my undeniable fluency, my flawless, coherent, and grammatically correct writing sample of my trip to Mexico, my desire to become an interpreter,my logical views on the worthlessness of make up, and my voluntary exit from formal schooling to pursue a 4 test GED rather than waste my precious time and intellect on 4 years of obeying rude, disrespectful unfrofessionals like the ones at ILI treating me as if I am less than then when I am more and will always be. Ever since I dropped out of highschool with a 4.33 GPA with Extra, Honors, and College credits, due to the utter lack of respect I had been receiving for years, I have been avoiding school settings. Every time I go back to one, I am reminded of why I left. Why I wake up every morning whenever I want to.Why I study what I love, not what I'm forced to. Why I live with and take care of the people that I love, not who I'm forced to sit in a classroom with. I am always so glad that I left the rat race when I did. Due to the inheret bussiness of my life, I wasn't actually planning on writing a review at first eventhough I knew she lied about my results. But when she had the audacity to send me an email in reference to my Spanish writing with a document attached to so called help me with my Spanish learning, I immeaditey decided that I had to write this review to combat the additonal blatant disrespect. I never even opened the document because I already know I need no such help conveying my thoughts in Spanish. She gave me the lowest level on Spanish writing when she knew I deserved a much higher level so she used the email and attachment to validate her lie. The only problem with my writing was a complete lack of accents, but I asked her before writing how to format the accents in Zoom and she said not to worry about them and that she'd imagine that they were there. It amuses me that she sent me an email after the fact pretending to provide resources for my supposedly poor Spanish writing skills when I was in the Zoom interview listening to her sigh loudly multiple times with an impatient look 4 minutes in to my paragraph. If you so called cared so much, then why did you sigh like I was wasting your time? That was extremely rude and highly unproffesional behavior for an instructor to exhibit in the presence of a student. This was in addition to disapproving and condescending looks and tones.

Faith Macpherson: The classes are the perfect amount of homework to class work for someone with a full time job and not too many hours to spare. The teacher is good at continuing to use the language when giving instructions and explanations, only swapping out to English when necessary. Only criticism is that I wish there could be a placement exam as levels differ greatly within a class and the guidelines aren't very helpful. Have enjoyed classes so far and would consider continuing to next levels.

Romain Devaux: I would not recommend Hindi classes. The teacher is really nice but is just not a teacher (and I am a language teacher, I can tell). No instructive approach, no teaching material but her book she followed to the letter. She kept distressing, reading chapters after chapters without taking the time to let us actually use the language. My advise - ask for a trial course to get to know the teacher before making any commitment to that school.

Leslie Shah: I really liked the International Language Institute (ILI). ILI has clear rules and expectations of teachers, staff, and students. There is a high degree of client customer service, respect and trust. ILI wants and works for student success. They offer and do as they so they do. Testing and Assessment are routine and part of progression.

Chaleeya Sri-intaranan: I had an appointment there to meet with the director name Fredrick! I really want to go to school but I have my visa situation (change of status) especially curently visa situation in the immigration is really bad and take so long. (But I have a Lawer on my side) Anyway, the way he looked at me and talked to me like I’m fresh from the boat!! And he said I’m just trying to get the visa just for staying in America !!! Not for studying!!!!!!!! I can’t believe that I heard that word from a school director!!! That’s unprofessional, but now I got acceptance from the other schools already. I definitely not recommend this school !! They should have talked to applicants better more polite and more Professional!!!
Response: I'm very sorry to hear that you feel like you were not treated fairly and professionally. That was certainly not my intention. As I explained to you when we had our meeting, your case is very complicated. Not only were you already here in the U.S. as an au-pair for two years, but you also have two B1/B2 visitor change of status applications pending for almost a full year. If you now file change of status application to be an F1 student you would have to file another B1/B2 extension application without even having a decision on your pending applications. I'm not an immigration attorney, but I'm not sure this is even possible. We have never had a case like this in my 16 years as director of ILI. As I also explained to you, if you want to be a student it would be a lot easier and quicker to travel back to your country and apply for the student visa from there. It is currently taking about one year to get a response on change of status applications. However, you stated you really wanted to stay here and wait another year to begin your studies if approved. I respectfully informed you that we are unfortunately not willing to accept your application due to the complicated nature of it, but you insisted that we should still help you. I wish you the best with your application and future plans of being a student in the U.S.

Sharon Borton: I've been at ILI for 2 years this summer and, have progressed quickly because the instructors are patient and non-judgmental, the classes are small (4-6) so there is a lot of individual attention and a great deal of expected participation and, the language is learned in every medium, i.e., conversational, reading and writing. And, finally, it is a lot of fun to learn another language and finally begin to feel confident about speaking another language. I highly recommend ILI.

International Center For Language Studies: what do users think?

Teacher Jessie Foreign Language Instructor.: As a student and also as a former teacher I can say that ICLS exceed your expectations. Great resources, well trained and experienced teachers from different backgrounds. ICLS cares about their teachers and students. It was a wonderful experience not only to work there but also take some French lessons.

Olivia Hoffmann: Positive: ProfessionalismI loved my Spanish class at ICLS this fall. My instructor communicated well with our class. I learned conversational and professional skills. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to further their language education!

Tatyana Ariyevich: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, QualityI took 2 tests with ICLS. The staff was professional yet friendly, and the testing process was well-organized. The instructions for both tests were clear and sent ahead of time. I received my test results in an hour. I would highly recommend ICLS for language testing.

Veronika Jerdetski: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueI really enjoyed my French evening group class w Philippe! I gained a lot of knowledge about grammar & the class was heavily focused on improving students’ speaking ability. The value I got from my studies is certainly worth the (very reasonable) tuition. Thank you!

Hongying Jia: Don't take test through this company. I should read this review before I picked this company as my tester. I'm a native Mandarin speaker who was born in China and had schools from elementary through post graduate school. I have been teaching Mandarin in US for 10 years. I just took other two Mandarin tests from other organizations and get superior level in Mandarin. But the testers of this company, ICLS, gave me a randomly low score. Same thing, they won't review my test until I pay another $200.

Brigid O'Donnell: I took an evening foreign language here. Classes are engaging and teachers are knowledgeable. The curriculum is rigorous but manageable for busy people. 5/5 experience, would recommend.

Driss Bernoussi: I took the Spanish evening group class for beginners and it was an amazing experience. This is much different than learning a language in high school or college, which was much more boring for me. At ICLS, they get you speaking Spanish from the beginning, and its highly interactive style helps you become comfortable with your classmates. My teacher, Astrid, was fantastic. Our class became so close that by the end we went out for a dinner on our last class and practiced ordering in Spanish. I highly recommend to any language learner in the DC area that is looking to take a class after work. It meets twice a week so it is perfectly manageable for my busy schedule.
Response: Thank you, Driss! We are glad that you found our teaching methodology to be helpful to your learning process.

Brent Peabody: Great school. I can say for what they lack in number of courses offered they make up for with the quality of the instruction itself. I took 30 hours of intensive Portuguese, and the instructor (Nilzelaine) made personal Powerpoints tailored to me before each session. The only downside is that during summer they don't have enough students to host group classes for less-studied languages, so be sure to confirm with them if they're actually teaching a class even if it's listed on their website. The thing that mosts distinguishes ICLS is the quality of their instructors. Mine spoke English flawlessly (so understood some of the difficulties in learning Portuguese from an English perspective) and had a background in pedagogy. Also nice is the fact ICLS classrooms have amenities like computers and projectors... this may sound basic, but I when I took classes at the International Language Institute, there was nothing but a whiteboard in each classroom. This may sound nice but for the fact it's so much easier to convey information through a prepared Powerpoint than, say, writing each conjugation over and over again on a whiteboard.
Response: Thank you Brent! We are glad that you enjoyed your class with Nilzelaine!

Berkay DEMIRKAN: I have studied English (ESL) Program in ICLS for a year and half. It was a great experience. The instructors were really friendly and they cared about our learning progress a lot. It wasn't just a language school, it was a cultural experience.
Response: Thank you, Berkay! You are a great student. We are glad that you are using your English to achieve your professional goals.

Nataliya Alekseyenko: Do not use them for language testing. I was tested in Russian<>English and neither one of the two testers were native speakers unlike me. They gave me random scores indicating I do not have competence in my native language and when I asked to explain their grading criteria they said they wouldn't but I could pay them even more money for their graders to review my scores. I have been teaching foreign language at several universities for over 10 years and I am very disappointed in their assessment and lack of accountability.

Global Language Network: what do users think?

Hubert Pierre: The affordable language lessons offered by the GLN uplift both students and teachers while making both learning and teaching fun. Moreover, the confidence that the used approach builds in students whether to improve at work, in their relationships, or to carry out missions overseas using learned foreign language is priceless. Such a wonderful network started within the classroom with observable major impact.

Anna W: After my Spanish skills got rusty with a few years of disuse, I enrolled in GLN's Spanish Tourist class and had a blast. The class was engaging and encouraging, and I spent almost all of every class period actively engaged in conversation. My speaking confidence increased dramatically, and I learned a lot of new vocabulary as well.

Michael Katz: I heard about this organization from a friend, saw the incredible reviews, and immediately fell in love with the mission and the work of GLN. Hats off to founder Andrew Brown and the team. I reached out and Andrew was very responsive and helpful. I love the diversity at GLN too!

Mark Maier: Great place for college students to gain work experience. Kind and professional staff, great location, many valuable skills to learn, and so much more. The bonds you build here will last a long time.

Modupe Adepoju: I took Yoruba for Foreigners this Summer with Busayomi. My family is Nigerian, but I could barely understand a word of it, let alone speak it. Signing up for the class was pretty easy. It was also pretty affordable and they even give you a stipend at the end if you have good attendance throughout the course. The entire course was 8 weeks and done through Zoom. The class was pretty small, about 5 of us. The teacher was amazing. Very patient and encouraging! We started with basics like greetings and made our way up to more complex vocabulary and sentence structure. Honestly I was shocked to see Yoruba being offered as a language because I've been looking for a class for years. It was definitely fun to impress my family with all the things I had learned. I would definitely recommend GLN to anyone interested in learning a language. They have dozens of languages available, the more popular languages and the less common.

Simone Junker: Good offering of affordable classes and a great community. My Spanish Frequent Flyer (intermediate) class with Mariela was amazing, with lots of interesting cultural content and plenty of speaking, listening and writing practice in a friendly, fun, relaxed learning environment. Most classes don't use a textbook, so they can have a less rigid structure, which was an advantage for me at intermediate level (more up-to-date topics and materials, often chosen based on students' interests). Online classes worked well and were very interactive thanks to Zoom and breakout rooms.

Katie May: Ironically, when I lived in DC I never had time to take a GLN class, but since they begun offering virtual classes due to the pandemic, I've taken two, and they've both been great! I loved getting the chance to keep up my language skills, and especially during the strange COVID year, it was great to get to connect with the teachers and other students!
Response: Thanks Katie. We are glad GLN finally worked for your schedule and we hope you and your friends will be able to join us for many more GLN classes!

Peter Beebe: I took a French class with GLN during the Spring of 2021. It was completely online and remote - which I had no issue with since I had spent all of Summer and Fall 2020 in a remote, intensive French course. I have been taking French for about 3 years and wanted to keep up on my language skills. I enrolled in my course and at first had an okay experience. My class was two hours long and met once a week. However, even with such a long class and only 6 students in the course, I often only spoke once or twice a class. The content was not very engaging and I was not getting my money's worth out of this course. After giving it a shot and staying in the course for about 6 or 7 weeks, I decided to leave the course and ask for a refund as it is not a small price to pay. At this point in time, I would probably give GLN a 3 star review. My reason for the 1 star review is the response I received from staff at GLN. After initially reaching out with my concerns and my request for even a partial refund (I had taken half the class, so I could understand that logic), I barely received a response. At first my complaints were passed onto a higher-up and then responded to by someone else. They denied my request and had said I spent too much time in the course to get a refund - even though they understood my frustrations. They continued to pass me on to different individuals who never gave a clear answer on why I couldn't receive a refund or any sort of compensation. The cherry on top was when the Founder - Andrew Brown - sent me an automated message to tell me I had not earned my stipend, but that they were offering my next level at GLN this summer. I responded to this email again with my complaints and asked for any explanation to which he continued to avoid and I have still heard nothing back. I am sure there are some great classes here, but there are definitely cheaper options that will actually do wonders to improve all aspects of your language acquisition and won't take your money without any consideration for low quality courses.

Fiona Caretto: I just finished my first semester of Mandarin with GLN and loved it! I can't recommend GLN enough. The teacher was great and highly qualified and the small class size made the language learning process fun and engaging. I will definitely continue on to take the other levels.

Emily Koenig: I really enjoyed my Arabic class at GLN. While the course was online because of COVID, I still managed to learn a lot and keep up my arabic skills! My teacher Sinan was great! and the whole class really came together to make the experience even more enjoyable. Looking forward to taking a class in person as soon as possible!

Inlingua Washington DC: what do users think?

Usman Khalid: This is the worst testing center for IELTS I have ever registered in my life. Please guys if you care about your money do not register for IELTS test in this center. You will definitely regret after paying your fee! These people only care about your money that's all. Even if this is the last option in the world I would say do not register for the test here. The staff is very rude and if you email them that you don’t want to take the test anymore because I don’t need it anymore, they will not refund you and only they care about money the fees 250$ fees you paid and they are the rudest staff I ever talk to, they just say to me that, whether I come to take the test or if I don’t take the IELTS test, they are not gonna refund me, worst and ridiculous customer service, Never Ever Book a test on this testing Center.
Response: Usman, As the Director of this Test Center, I take this sort of feedback very seriously, so thank you for taking time to write out your thoughts. IELTS is an international standardized test with a refund policy that is not set by the local center. Refunds are allowed for documented health conditions and other clearly-defined situations, as described during the registration process. I apologize if our commitment to upholding the standard IELTS policies to which we are accountable was perceived as rude, though we simply do not have the amount of flexibility that you were hoping for. Our commitment is to deliver the IELTS test according to the international standards in all areas of back office administration, test delivery, materials security, personal integrity, and customer service. I would be more than happy to discuss your personal experience further, to get a better understanding of anything you would like to highlight. Jared Holsing Director (703) 527-7888

Daniela Melendez: Do not take your TOEFL exam here!!!! I wish I would have read the reviews for this location as a test center before my exam. It wasn't even that the place was not well equipped. I didn't even have the chance to experience that. Nobody showed up!!! We were 15 test-takers waiting, and they never opened the building nor answered our calls. We couldn't take the test, and now I have been on the phone trying to reschedule it for over 2 hours. This is a nightmare; please try to take it at home or find a better location.

They let me clear and quick understanding of the school curriculum, and then they help me for my personal situation made several plans, So I have a lot of choices, and give me plenty time full to consideration. The second, after joining the school, I feel like a family in here, Every teacher who whether you know or don't know . They will be warm to say hello and regard to you. I remembered my first class, I was shy to speak but the teacher was very patiently guide me and help me. Even teacher was effective help for my question of study and make me improve a lot. So I made great progress. And the school every day it will have extra-curricular activities to enrich everyone's spare time. Finally I want to talk about that the geographical environment of the school. The school is located near by the beautiful Potomac River, and a bridge between the famous Georgetown and school. Amara Ganjuur: It's so unforgettable memories that related with Inlingua Washington. Just after i landed in Dulles airport, it was my first spot to visit and the front-desk stuff welcomed me so nicely and friendly. And i also never ever forget the wonderful feeling when i was trying to find a school and walking along the road when i first got off the Metro in Rosslyn Station. President of School, McKay welcomed me so nicely and Patricia helped me a lot to join right English level when i was there. International Student advisor Natalie helped to invite my family under F-2 dependent visa come here. I really miss the school staff and my classmates there. If its possible, i wanna study here as much as i can. I highly recommend you guys this English school, If you really want to improve your English language Academically and Practically. English language materials and methodology is so practical and very useful.

Mohamed Khadir: This review is about TOEFL test test center in this horrible place . Don't ever take your test here , very bad staff , the hall has the check in desk and you will take the test in the same place , so noisy and distracted , plus the computers separated by cartoon sheets like you literally will hear the person next to you, plus the computers most of it hanging , old , not good .person who check in people lack of experience , she is very slow , doesn't know how to move me and put me in another computer when i asked to , because apparently she doesn't know how to do it . this center waste my time my money because of the bad standards they follow, I hope other people see my comment and please for god sake don't ever take your test here if you wanna get a good score in TOEFL. you all know Toefl need concentration all depend on time each second will change your score , Definitely this is not a good place to achieve your goal .
Response: Hi Mohamed. We would like to extend our apologies regarding your experience in this test. We always make sure our applicants are satisfied with the service. We follow the ETS requirements for testing, and we are very interested in your comments. If you have any suggestions, it would be great if you could email the team with some ideas at toefl@ets.org

Luis Roberto Escoto: The course really helped me improve in my listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in English. This class helped me become more aware of my weaknesses and also gave me tools to strengthen them. Different activities such as question and answer activities, pair work, educational games group, discussions and group projects, dialogues, role playing, oral presentations, multimedia activities and books helped me understand how I could become a more effective communications in English. The class is a lot of work, but it's totally worth it. I learned a variety of elements and principles to continue studying English by myself. The private classes were useful and helped highlight key to review basic concepts and structures to speaking and reading and hold and take part in meetings in English. I particularly enjoyed the private classes. I am already recommending the course to some of my friends who are interested in improving their skills in English. The course requires a lot of work that some people may not be willing to put into it.

Komal Ganjoo: I had an awesome experience studying at Inlingua DC. I took an IELTS test prep, where I enhanced my all four areas- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. My special thanks to Patricia Layden, who responded to all my concerns and guided me accordingly; I am also thankful to Katja Edwards, who helped in all smooth transactions and big thanks to my instructor, Jessica Fast Michel, who patiently worked hard on my weak areas. Sincerely, to learn English, Inlingua is the best.

Mehmet Osman Coskun: I studied at Inlingua prior to going to law school. Learned so much and had so much fun. Teachers were great and very friendly. After studying there i got a 7.5 on the ielts exam.

Berlitz Washington DC Language Center: what do users think?

Lauren L: Taking Spanish lessons at Berlitz has been a wonderful experience. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating if there are any scheduling hiccups. My teachers go above and beyond by using different learning materials or thinking of creative ideas to keep pushing me to learn.
Response: Thank you, Lauren, for your feedback!

Leticia Vasquez: Attempted to enroll in Portuguese classes and contacted several people from the facility, but no one ever helped me sign up for classes. It's been 5 months in total since I showed my interest in taking the classes, but they never took that under consideration. It's just a lack of professionalism and customer service.

Goethe-Institut Washington: what do users think?

Diego Chojkier: This review is only valid for the World Cup. The Goethe Institut has been nice enough to project all of ze Germany games on a giant screen. The upstairs ampitheater holds a large crowd of (politely rowdy) German fans. Most importantly, it's BYOB. The walgreens across the street just became your best friend.

Kevin Brazda: Amazing place to learn and grow not only your skills as a German speaker but also the quintessential location to broaden your cultural understanding of Germanic anthropologies

Patrick Göbels: Building bridges.

Gamble Hayden: Great place!

Derek Lesho: (Translated by Google) Friendly staff and cozy atmosphere (Original) Freundliches Personal und gemütliche Stimmung

International School of Languages: what do users think?

John Wood: As a current student I can say I am a huge fan of ISL for many reasons. I have been taking Portuguese there online with a fantastic professor and support staff and am having a lot of fun learning the language. When I visited Brazil my inlaws / family / friends all were asking me how I had improved so much recently and I told them about my classes at ISL. They told me I must have a good teacher and I said I definitely do. Other benefits include the flexibility of online classes and the the very affordable cost. Overall I am extremely happy with ISL and am excited I am finally on my way to becoming bilingual.
Response: Thank you so much John for your nice review! It is great that your Portuguese classes are going well with Rosangela and that you have accomplished so much. We are very happy to have you as a student!

June Lee: My daughter worked with a wonderful tutor from middle school through her high school graduation to supplement her school French class and to improve her French speaking/listening comprehension. As her schedule became busier I would check to see if she wanted to continue the tutoring sessions and the answer was always a strong YES. Johannes' patience, warmth and natural teaching style really helped her improve her level, confidence and interest in truly learning beyond school. Johannes and the staff at ISL are invested in their students - celebrating, congratulating or showing concern as life events happen outside of class. This is a connection we will always appreciate.
Response: Dear June, thank you very much for sharing your experience at ISL. We are lucky to have such nice students!

Tatijana Pesic: I had the excellent experience with the International School oh languages. They came to my assistance when I needed them and were most prompt and expedient when I needed them. I am most happy with everything with them. I recommend them completely. The language teacher was most nice and helpful. I had the good experience with them. Thank you International School of Languages. I will use you again.
Response: Thank you Tatijana for sharing your experience. It has been a pleasure having you as a student. A presto!

Bill Geary: I started taking individual in-person French classes through ISL just before the pandemic shut everything down. Classes continued on Zoom which is a great format for one-on-one language training. Everything is captured on the whiteboard and emailed to me so I don't have to focus on taking lots of notes... instead I can focus on listening and learning. My teacher is a native French speaker and everyone involved with ISL has been friendly, flexible, and communicative. I also use Duolingo but it is not as good at teaching languages. I highly recommend language training at ISL.
Response: Hello Bill, Bill, thank you so much for taking the time to kindly share your experience with us! We are very happy that you are enjoying the French lessons at ISL. We look forward to continue helping you in your French journey :)

Bill Lustig: I have taken beginner Spanish lessons here since September 2012, and have been very pleased with my progress. My instructor was always prepared for class, and did a good job explaining confusing subjects (for me, it was grammar, while for another student in my class, it was pronunciation). The office staff was very helpful, and was great about setting up make-up classes for me whenever I had a scheduling conflict. If you're hoping to learn a new language, or brush up on one that's gotten rusty, I would definitely recommend Language Fundamentals. Also, it's nearby a pretty good burger place.

Johnnie Kenneybrew: I took both Portuguese and Hebrew at ISL for a few months and I was thrilled with the service I received. The school is very small which allows for you to get more individualized attention from the teacher and you get a chance to build good relationships with those around you as well. I really enjoyed the approaches that were used in classes. The Portuguese teacher, Rosangela, really went above and beyond and worked hard to ensure that we were really pushing ourselves in class and working outside of the classroom as well (she also brought in pão de queijo which was a delicious motivator). I had a blast refreshing my Hebrew skills with private lessons and group classes as well. The teacher, Miriam, was very supportive as we went over the alef-bet, basic vocabulary, and conversational Hebrew that I'd be able to use everyday during my trip to Israel. She was really creative and made class very interactive sometimes even with songs and coloring (2 activities that I feel are underrated when it comes to learning a new language!). The administrative team was extremely flexible with me and I could not be happier with the relationships I've made at ISL or with the language services I've received. I am taking a break for now just because I can't find the time these days but as soon as that changes I will be back in the classroom. I found their classes and lessons to be quite affordable and everyone you interact with there truly wants to help you on you goal of learning a new language. It's a really uplifting environment!

Ana Toribio: I had english conversational private lessons for 12 hours. The teacher was great, she had lots of patience, very good manners and a big constantly smile. I can say my english really improved. I would highly recommend International School of Languages to anyone who wants to improve in english speaking language.
Response: Ana, thank you so much for your kind review. We are happy that you had a good experience with us. It has been a pleasure meeting you. Hope to see you soon! Have a great trip back home!

Alpaca Paca: WORST management & irresponsible customer service! (I would rate a negative star if I could!) I've registered for the Japanese language spring classes like one month ago. ONE hour prior to the class started , I got a call from the center saying that the classes is CANCELLED due to I'm the only student where they need at least 2 pax to start the group class!! I was being recommended to wait a week or two perhaps there will be additional head count for the class, or I can switch it to private lesson ( 7 instead of 11 classes for what I've paid .) I will appreciate if they could carry on the class as I was given such a last minute notice. However, I was not being offered that . Instead , I requested for refund as I'm so disappointed with the management. Meanwhile , other language schools has started their spring classes too , means that I can't sign up at other centers too! Well, I wish you luck if you were to sign up for this school.
Response: Dear Lim, I am sorry that this has happened. We definitely did not reach our standards today when we missed the fact that there was only one student (you) enrolled in today's class and failed to call you earlier to let you know. Instead, we gave you a call an hour before the class was supposed to start so I understand your frustration. I would feel the same way. As a first time student with us, I am sorry that this is the impression we have left on you. Many of our students have been with us for several years largely because of their satisfaction with our services. We recognize our mistake and for that reason we were very prompt in refunding your entire investment. Please accept our apologies once again.

Matthew Wilson: THE place to sign up for intensive personalized training at the right level for you!
Response: Thank you Matthew for sharing! We are happy to hear that lessons are going well with Ana Maria. Very happy to have you as our student!

Nancy Shalett: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueMy professor is fabulous - and the staff is attentive and pleasant I can highly recommend them!
Response: Nancy, thank you soo much for your kind words. Students like you is what makes us want to work harder every day!

Mentora College - Washington, D.C.: what do users think?

Linh Truong: Mentora College is totally the best place in DC to study ESL. Tuition is better than other ESL schools in the area and during COVID, they provide student housing to students and even gave a discount so everyone can afford it and continue attending classes online from the dorm. The teachers and administration clearly care about their students, and they are attentive and really listen if there is any issues.

Alex Roset: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueMentora College is highly recommended. Small classes, very affordable prices, several class schedules, excellent location half a block from a metro station, and upscale facilities. More importantly, a very qualified team of experienced English-speaker teachers.

Gjergj Dollani: Positive: Communication, ValueI like this school. The teachers are knowledgeable and they take their time to explain. If you look around you'll also find out that it's better value. You'll save money going to Mentora. Other ESL schools are more expensive.

C Hstreet: The students, the two supervisors, and fellow teachers are amazing. It is a diverse group of people. The three stars are for the these people. However, the lower review is due to the higher administration. The environment is toxic to work in and the chances for advancement are not present. Writing this review will probably result in a search to figure out who did it and result in punishment by the higher management. This is why it is being posted with an alternative username. People are worried about keeping their job and say "yes" to the higher administration. This has caused a lack of any change to occur to make the school better for the staff.

Pornpimon M.: I've been taking English classes at Mentora college for 5 months. I like this school so far, my English skills are getting better. It is not only you will get knowledge but also there are a lot of fun activities and a field trip which you can hang out with friends who are from many countries around the world and use daily conversation in English. All teachers are thoughtful and patient. As almost we know, learning a second language is not easy, but if we can the right place to learn. You will improve English. So, I’d love to recommend Mentora college.

Koray Bintas: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueGreat place to work and study! The school provides scholarships not only to its students, but also their employees so that they could continue their their professional development while working. Fantastic location in the heart of D.C!
Response: Thanks Koray!

Arya Kahramaner: Such an amazing experience that I had in Mentora College. The teachers were very sympathetic and helpful. they truly want the best for their students and always make an effort to satisfy our requisites. Mentora's location is also convenient and you can find bus and metro stations near the college. I genuinely recommend you this language school.

Mustafa Aktaş: If you think about studying ESL in DC, this school is the best option. They have modernized classrooms, the library and the computer lab are very convenient to spend time. They have ESL and American Experience classes which are giving you chance to choose the days you want to go to school. You also have different teacher every session. I had an amazing experience and really loved the location!

nutthaphat champasak: I used to study in Mentora college 3 months. In my opinion, this school is good but not all. i like teachers in this school because they are friendly and informally. On the other hand, i do not like the tuition process that you have to pay before you want to take vacation or transfer to other school.

Tiptunya Kampim: Mentora College is a good international school that I have learned in USA. There are a lot of fieldtrips and activities. I have many good teachers and cute friends. My best teacher that I have studied with is Mr. Brian Murphy. He always took care students and helped students when we had some problems of learning in the class. He taught very well and applied many games and activities that is easy to remeber the words in many lessons. He is active and creative. I met him in the first time of ESL class. He made me like learning English and start intending to study English. I love ESL class so much because I can know how to write good essay and how to speak or presentation in front of many people and we always practiced to learn English so I can use English in routines very well and this school is my best for me.

ILA - International Language Academy of Washington, DC: what do users think?

Divine Damango: Such a great school !!! I strongly recommand this school to learn english ! I met an excellent professors and students. We learned english faster but brillant !

Khalid Alnuaimi: In short and simple... The location is great... (Near to the Metro, Tyson Corner Mall, Coffee shop, and to the Supermarket(Harris Teeter)). The environment depends on students... Students are not allowed to talk in any other language than English, and it is essential to talk in low voice, so other students can concentrate on study. The ILA stuff encourages students to speak in English during the day. Short classes... Classes usually from 10 to 2, So do not care about traffic and if you have a car, parking is available and free. In addition, you just have four days a week. Books are provided... Most books are provided, and it's not just the language I get from the school, but culture understanding and many important topics that we cover over sessions. To conclude, you should visit the Institute if you interested and check that your self. (Read, Write if you want to learn fast, but remember good things take time!!)

Laura Sansone: ILA is an amazing English school. I studied at ILA for 2 months and I has been a great experience!

Ummuhan Yavuz: It is a great place to learn English. Teachers are very good.

Wesley Taylor: Great school and excellent staff. Highly recommend.

Ayman Ibrahim: Excellent institute, dedicated instructors, honest management

DC Internationals MESALI: what do users think?

Christina U: I just completed a private Arabic course with DC Internationals MESALI instructors Nadia and Abdou. It was excellent! I really liked how the instructors worked with me to find course materials that interested me. I felt much more confident about speaking in Arabic after this class.

David Bartley: I required to maintain proficiency in a language for my work and MESALI is an excellent school to maintain and improve language skills. I took two classes at MESALI over a two year time period and I was able to improve my listening and reading comprehension significantly. I started the first class at a level below meeting standards for my occupation and by the time I finished the second course, I was far exceeding requirements. The school offered various, flexible class options, which was helpful in working around my work and family schedule, and my teacher was excellent. I would highly recommend this school.

Jessica Falkner: MESALI classes are top notch. As a student in the beginner Arabic class, I was impressed when my classmates and I were able to read words in script within a few classes while learning a significant amount of vocabulary and constructing sentences at a rapid pace. The classes include quality instruction and are extremely effective at improving language skills quickly. The classes are small and very personalized to the students as well, which has created a fun, productive, and creative learning environment. I highly recommend, sukran MESALI!

Arastoo: I view my intermediate Arabic course at MESALI as a great experience. To my pleasant surprise, I very quickly learned advanced grammar and started to speak Arabic, as requirements for my Graduate Studies program. Given English is not my native tongue, learning beginning Arabic through English instruction could have been extra difficult, rather the teachers made learning clear and comfortable. I just had a basic knowledge of Arabic when I started this course, but gradually became able to speak and also improve my writing skills at the same time. Having a knowledgeable and motivating teacher, helps you go far beyond what you want to learn, especially when you are learning a new language. I had two great teachers who encouraged me all the time, to start speaking by practicing what I've learned in the classroom in terms of grammar and vocabulary. They went far beyond teaching by using different learning methods and thinking of creative ideas to keep pushing me to learn and helped me to get over my hesitation to speak the language. They also took personal interest in me, and went the extra mile to advise me with my professional pursuits well beyond language, with their contacts and relationships throughout the foreign policy community, a great value added to MESALI being based in Washington DC. I highly recommend MESALI.

Jackson Wright: During my time studying Modern Standard Arabic at DC Internationals MESALI, I have learned so much, in such a short amount of time. Starting from scratch, I participated in the 120 hour Summer Critical Languages Institute, and in another 120 hour course during the Fall semester because I saw so much concrete tangible results. In comparison to other language classes I have participated in, MESALI is unique, in that, its professors provide different teaching methods that make it easier for the student to learn. For example, professors would provide memory tools and reveal patterns that would make it easier for the student to apply while learning the language. At MESALI, the professors are knowledgeable, helpful, and personable. At no time have I felt that the training was sub-par. I strongly recommend MESALI for any person who is looking to learn a new language, or enhance a language they currently possess as the professors are flexible and accommodating at all levels. With the help of MESALI, I feel confident in the training I am receiving that I will be able to use it as I progress in my career.

Jawwad Ahmad: I had the pleasure of taking the Arabic 1 Standard course with Mesali. I was very hesitant to sign up and commit to a language course on top of my busy work and personal schedule, but am very glad that I did. The instructor was pleasant, knowledgeable, and surprisingly funny! The small class size and engaging teaching style helped keep everyone focused. It gets pretty tiring to sit through a class after working from 9-5, but these classes were a great time. Time and money well spent!

David Waldman: This summer I took an intermediate-level intensive course in Modern Standard Arabic at DC Internationals MESALI under the instruction of Adjunct Professor Zahara'. I was very pleased with the course and my instructor. After reading and speaking proficiency assessments with other staff, my teacher adjusted my level accurately and changed the textbook series -- providing a personal touch. The textbook work included reading out loud and answering comprehension questions. This led to discussions on topics that increased my vocabulary far more extensively than the textbook itself. One of the coolest aspects of my class was listening to my teacher speak Arabic at a fluid speed. This helped me to understand Arabic in real time and the immersive environment encouraged me to respond and contribute in Arabic as well, thus honing my speaking proficiency, speed, and vocabulary. I highly recommend studying Arabic with Adjunct Professor Zahara' at DC Internationals MESALI. She is a kindhearted, generous, and intelligent teacher with multiple degrees and much experience in education, Arabic and English literature, and other fields. In addition to MSA, I unexpectedly amassed a wealth of information about Arab history, culture, religion, politics, media, etc. from her. Years ago, I had a similar positive experience with Ross, the director of DC Internationals, which is mainly why I returned, and I'm super glad I did!

Strategic Compass: Due to my career, I was interested in learning Arabic in the DC area so I searched the internet to see what was available. After discovering a wide range of offerings, I settled on two private institutes that offered evening courses and enrolled in both - one on Mon and Wed nights and the other on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Needless to say, the Middle East & South Asia Language Institute (DC Internationals MESALI) was one of those institutes. The difference was astounding. The coursework at the unsaid institute was more similar to a course you'd expect at a local senior center where people would take a language as a hobby, not to assist in an actual career. By the end of that institute's course, the class had dwindled from around 15 down to 3 or 4. Needless to say, it would not qualify as college credit. MESALI on the other hand was serious about its courses and its instruction, akin to Graduate School study. The coursework was rigorous and the goal was clearly to equip the students with valuable language skills that would assist us in our careers. I would highly recommend MESALI to anyone who is looking to attain invaluable language skills for their career. MESALI is the real deal.

Jonathan Rose: I found my Arabic class here through reviews, and the results surpassed my expectations. The classes got my Arabic off the ground, and I am continuing with them to keep advancing. We also developed a camaraderie among the students that kept morale up when classes went late. I highly recommend the Arabic classes here.

Alliance Française: what do users think?

roberta weinman: I recently took three courses through this Alliance and finished the last one at B2.1. I have had many classes through other Alliances and was very disappointed with the quality and pace of the instruction. It seemed as though we were rushing through the book and exercises without the time to truly absorb what we were supposed to learn. We were often cut off when asking questions or making comments, so that the instructor could quickly go to the next section of the book. Learning should be enjoyable, as well as informative. This particular class was neither, especially compared with my other experiences. (Note: The Everyday French class was very good and completely different in tone and pace, with this instructor attuned to the needs of his students.) I am also appalled at the way I was treated by the administration when I made an attempt to talk about my experience with the instructor of the B-level classes. Sarah Diligenti, especially, is arrogant and dismissive and really does not want to hear about any negative experiences. The administration simply does not care. I would encourage potential students to stay away from this Alliance.

Melanie La Force: Positive: ProfessionalismThe staff are always willing to help. The teachers are awesome. I succeeded at getting my DALF C1. This was a tough exam and the prep was great.

jsksj ydjs: The staff of this alliance françaice was very rude to me. I only wanted to take the B2 delf exam, but because I failed the begging test, and they placed me as a A1 student, they told me that they won't allow me to take it never, no mattering how much French I could learn. I won't be back, and I don't recommend this place for anybody.

Bonnie Beavers: Bassima was my teacher for my class (level 104.A.2), which for me was the first French classroom experience since university days 40 years ago. I enjoyed it enormously and will sign up again. We spoke French the entire time, and the materials were very helpful & well-organized. French immersion schools abroad know about Alliance and respect their teaching.

JC Kollmorgen: Membership and the cost of classes are pretty steep altogether. However, the quality of teaching is good. Much better than taking a class at USA Graduate School, for examples. Their library is also fantastic. You can borrow books, DVDs, and audio. I only wish they had more higher level class offerings at their Penn Quarter location as it would be more convenient for me.

Brittany Roth: I took the A101 course at Alliance Francaise this last October and the professor spoke in English more than half of the time and the class moved very slowly, which is all fine given we are all complete beginners. She was very nice and made sure the students were understanding all the topics. I then signed up for this A102 class and the teacher spoke nearly 100% of the time in French and moved through new material very quickly. He explained all new concepts in French and did not always make sure that what he was explaining was understood. The A101 class that I took absolutely did not prepare me for the A102 class. The professor used words and phrases that were never previously covered. Also, if you did not understand right away he would become very impatient. One time I said I did not understand something and he said scoffed and asked why? He did similar things with other students. His behavior was very upsetting and often times caused me to get frustrated and want to give up. I finished this course very unhappy. On top of my frustrations with the teacher, I never received my results for the end of the session test. This past week I moved to France and want to enroll in the Alliance Francaise program in Toulouse and having my test results would have been great in order to help place me in a course here.

Sarah Lewthwaite: Alliance Francaise has a very poor system for allocating students to levels in teen classes. We wasted a lot of money -- their classes are expensive -- because our daughter's class contained one student who was way behind all the others, and the teacher taught at that student's level. When we raised the issue, we encountered a dismissive attitude from a senior staff member. Classes for other ages may be good -- we have no experience of them -- but don't waste your money on teen classes.

Albert Traver: I've attended two beginner courses so far ($400 each) at l'Alliance and I'm pretty happy with my French and the teaching. They have a lot of day/time options at my level so it's been convenient and looks like their library has a bunch of options but haven't explored it yet.

Charlotte Dadzie: I think the class I took helped me improve my language skills a little, I did not like the fact that the teacher I had did not say anything when students were laughed at when they made a mistake. I mean We learn together, we shouldn’t laugh at people when they make a mistake, we should instead help them.

joseph Thompson: Wissam is a great French teacher. I took several classes with him and would highly recommend.

French Academy DC: what do users think?

Shelby Servais: I took Survival 1. The instructor was great, the class size was small, and the material covered French basics. I had absolutely zero knowledge of the language and now I can manage ordering croissants, giving directions, simple introductions, and a few other essentials. If you look at the cost/hour, it is also really affordable.

Alison Hickman: I am once again inspired to practice my French regularly. I have been afraid to speak French because of my accent and mistakes. My instructor was kind in correcting mistakes and allowing us to fail here and there which is a necessary part of learning a language! I found the combination of exercises (written, oral, audio, and video) to be extremely helpful. The resources given to us were also excellent (handouts/pdf, websites, videos, podcasts, etc) and I will continue to use them to study in the future. I especially love that I can take classes online which makes it super easy to do right before work, from anywhere, etc. The price for the class is also great; it makes it accessible to more people. I think if more people knew about it, they'd take a class!
Response: Thank you so much Alison for sharing your feedback. It is very nice to see that we are doing the right thing. :)

Caroline Easton: I just finished Survival 2 and previously took Survival 1 here, both of them online. These classes are wonderful! The pacing of the classes is great for adults and the laid-back nature of the course takes a lot of pressure off. Eric was an absolutely fantastic teacher and I would highly recommend taking some of the courses here if you get the chance! The materials for the course come with the fee, so you really don't need to buy anything extra. There is homework each week, but it enforces the lesson and generally takes <30 minutes (perfect for those who are busy!). Classes are immersive, so you really learn to pick up on the language quickly. I learned more in 16 weeks of classes than I did in 3 years of high school! The online experience was very good, as the class is done through Zoom. Eric shared screens with us to show additional course materials for the lesson and made sure every student felt involved and understood. I'm looking forward to getting more practice in and coming back to continue the classes!

Azahara Padron: I just finished "Conversation and Grammar A2" workshop and I really enjoyed the online classes. The pacing of the classes is great for adults, the teacher made sure every student felt involved and understood...I highly recommend them.

Sanjana Mukherjee: I took an introduction to French workshop course for 5 weeks from April to May 2020. My instructor was excellent and very encouraging. We were provided with worksheets and exercises to practice. I was part of a group class and learning with the other students was very enjoyable. Highly recommend!

Kathryn Autrey: I attended a survival one at French Academy in Farragut. I was very happy with how it went, I liked the small group work done in the class which allowed for more one on one attention with the teacher. It let me really gain a better understanding for corrections that needed to be made helping me improve. Overall it was a great experience.
Response: Thank you Kathryn for sharing your impressions about your beginner class. Hope to see you soon in the Survival 2.

Michelle Tafur: I had an important test to pass and a short timeline in which to prepare. I emailed on a Thursday or Friday and had my first lesson on Monday. I worked with Natacha. She was super helpful, very patient and took her time with me to guide me through everything I needed to understand. I passed the test with flying colors and I have so much thanks to Natacha and the academy for their help.

Claire Lavergne: This was honestly a great opportunity for learning French. I took a conversation class and the topics were interesting and useful. The teacher listened to us and helped us along and was able to be flexible about our requests. I will say though that the classroom was kinda small...

Jennifer Matel: I enjoyed the online lunch hour class for beginners. The instructor was engaging, motivated, and very patient. I’m now even more motivated to continue learning.

Maddie Kau: I've been taking group classes online during the pandemic and I love the structure (homework and agenda for classes) and getting to know other students who are at my same level.

Language Trainers USA: what do users think?

franco brachetta: I've been taking Italian classes, to re-connect with my relatives in Parma. I'm not only getting the results I was hoping to get, the customer service is excellent. They have always replied in an efficient and timely manner.
Response: This is lovely to know, Franco! We help learners from all over the world learn a language for any reason, but few are better than helping family to connect better.

SEAN KIM: Great student. I loved teaching my native language to the student. A great experience.
Response: We are thrilled to read this, Sean! We work hard to find the right student-teacher setup and are glad you had a great experience! Your student shared similar comments with us, highlighting how helpful you were with his Korean learning.

The Italian Cultural Society of Washington D.C.: what do users think?

Helena Tang: I have been taking classes at the Italian Language Program for over 7 years and have had a wonderful experience. The Program is well-run, the facilities are nice, and the atmosphere is friendly. What I appreciate most is my teacher, Cristiana Fabiani, with whom I have had classes for the entire 7+ years, starting from the Beginning level (I literally started with zero knowledge of Italian) to now where we are reading books (including one by an Italian Nobel Prize winner). Cristiana is a great teacher; she is very patient and encouraging, and has the best classroom management skills. She tries to ensure that everyone in the class has a chance to speak, and encourages those who are reticent to speak up. Thanks to Cristiana, not only am I reading Italian literature (it is still a lot of work for me!) but I have gained enough listening comprehension and speaking skills that I feel I can function in Italian (with mistakes and gaps in vocabulary, of course). All in all, the Italian Language Program has really worked well for me and I fully recommend it!

Francisca Helmer: I have been taking Italian language classes at ICS for seven years. The programs and teachers are excellent. The Society offers a wide range of language and cultural programs in a congenial setting. I highly recommend ICS to anyone who has an interest in Italian language and culture.

David Cieslikowski: The Italian Cultural Language Program is terrific! Great teachers, with in person and online classes at all levels.

Graciela Luna: Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, ValueExcellent instructors, high quality learning material, conducive to a good learning environment.

Robert Levy: Founded in 1953, but released from the Italian Government's support in 2013, the ICS has thrived growing in classes offered and activities. (The market does work, Adam Smith.) A superior place to learn Italian, as Mortimer Adams says, the language of love.
Response: Amazing!

Elena Drei: Great Italian classes for children!
Response: Wonderful! Thank you so much!

Rossitza Newhall: A lot of language classes.
Response: We agree! Thanks for the review!

Marina Martin La Strega Tax Services: Authentic Italian environment
Response: We certainly try! Thank you so much!

Washington English Center: what do users think?

sebastien salcedo: I think it's a big deal. The teachers work for free, they have 3 employees who are in charge of hundreds of students. The online system is very deficient, almost at the end of the course the person in charge connected to explain how to use the code of the books????. Some teachers are very good others are not but as they work for free there is no option to do anything. In the zoom chat explain that we are at level 2, you have to use simple words, speak slowly and articulate the words......

Annie Prusky: Positive: Professionalism, ValueI have been a volunteer at WEC for several years; this is a truly community-oriented organization that provides excellent education with care.

Alejandro Rizo: It is a very good institute and I recommend it.

Helen Xu: We came here for the interactive media exhibit and it was very interesting. There are two levels and the staff was friendly and helpful. You must get timed entry tickets prior to coming here.

Berlitz Tysons Corner Language Center at Regus: what do users think?

Julie Harvey: I took private Spanish lessons to help with professional development. With my ever-changing work schedule, they were very accommodating in adjusting my schedule and even offered lessons online when I was not able to make it to the learning center. The instructors adapted the lessons to my language needs and I am now more confident in using Spanish to improve working relationships. Thank you Berlitz!

Julia Bergan: I came with zero experience and had a wonderful teacher who encouraged me and was patient and fun.The admin staff was always friendly and helpful. The center was clean and I liked the overall atmosphere. Can definitely recommend this language center!

Ridma Kamal: Awesome Work Environment, Great teachers from different parts of the world, very rich culturally enticing atmosphere. Students who study here always want to come back just to be part of this family.

mamdouh abu ghanam: The worst center ever, bad sales, no one answers, even if you go there they don’t have any information

FAHAD ALDUBAYAN: I took a course back in 2000It was a nice experience, lots of memories
