Avery Johnson: This past weekend I went in to get my first tattoo and I was extremely excited about it because it was my birthday too. I walked in with my friends (we are all African-American) and we quietly waited in the lobby. At first the team were really great to us and we got to chat with the artist, the other POC staff were really great and I was genuinely excited, but then a white woman with red hair entered the space. The other receptionist asked her how her jog was so we assumed she worked there, so no issue. She scanned the room and approached us and asked that my friends leave because the lobby area had become "too busy". 'Too busy" or "too black"? My friends respected the request and left. A few minutes later, a group of white girls entered the shop and only one was being serviced but the white woman with red hair had no issue with their group being in the lobby with no masks. So somehow the black group made it busier? That whole situation made me feel uncomfortable so I left, we shouldn't have to act like we are back in Jim Crow times when we are paying for a service. Tyler Mates: The gentleman who just arrived from Venezuela 🇻🇪 was SO GOOD. He had great energy, vibes and earthly conversation was out of this world 🗺 . I got the tattoo of my dreams. Of my best friend Ollie! Minimal style from a logo I already got. I was pleased with the turnout, price and service going in on standby. The logo was mine and it’s now on my skin for life! I forgot your name but thank you to the moon and back

Andrea Sevilla: I emailed them to get a quote for a tattoo but the artists I wanted weren’t available which is okay so I decided to go with Lola since she had openings. She wanted to do a video call or FaceTime to discuss further but when the day of the appointment came she didn’t reach out. I didn’t receive a call or an email to reschedule so I emailed them to do so. The second time I also got stood up by the artist and didn’t get any notification about it or an apology, no explanation as to why she hadn’t reached out to me both times either. They called me a week later wanting to reschedule for the third time but at that point I had completely lost any interest in her as an artist because it doesn’t really matter how good you are, you can’t be unprofessional and stand up people twice and expect them to still want to work with you. I’m sure she’s talented but I can’t give my money and trust to someone that doesn’t have any sort of respect my time.

marina castaneda: Roman pierced my nipples and did an amazing job, he took his time and did not make me feel rushed with the process at all. He took his time with my questions and understood my circumstances and was letting me decide if it was what I really wanted to get done. He also did two of friends nipples as well and they said nothing but good things to say about him. If you want someone to trust, go with Roman. He is NOT a creep, doesn’t make you feel rushed and lets you ask any questions you may have. Thanks Roman!

Nabeelah Muhammad: I came in for a simple tattoo of my birthyear. The tattoo was a dark blue/indigo shade. But after a few weeks the tattoo was completely faded and the numbers are not shaded in solidly. I was told my dark skin was the problem and that I chose a "bright" color. The artist admitted she may have overworked the tattoo. I came in for a touch up after spending more than 3 weeks trying to get scheduled. The receptionist were rude and ignored my emails and did not return my calls. It seems these artists don't know how to work on dark skin which is sad since their shop is in a predominantly black and Latino neighborhood. Service: Tattoos

Nicholas Daou: Tried to schedule an appointment with Lola, she flaked. I reached out to the shop who apologized and then I was assured she wouldn’t flake on the next consult FaceTime. Surprise surprise, she flaked and didn’t even answer the receptionist who tried to get ahold of her. She pulled a similar thing on a friend of mine, actually skipping a session and not just a consult call. Definitely not impressed and going to have to find a different shop to go to.

Amber Nicole: This shop is dangerous to BIPOC and exhibits many concerning racist behaviors toward black patrons. The front desk worker is hostile and the staff are incompetent on how to tattoo black and brown skin. This is a basic standard skill any artist should be well trained in, especially in a neighborhood that is predominantly black and Latinx. The lack of this shows a blatant refusal to adapt to the times and treat people with basic kindness and dignity.

Brittany L: My friend and I came here for our second and third tattoos, respectively. We came in for a consult with Doctor Z in May and made appointment for today (June 12). We didn't see our art until we arrived but he didn't disappoint! I selected a cross-stitch design, which isn't an easy thing to do. He was honest about how this was only his second one in ten years of tattooing but he did an amazing job. He had four options for me in terms of design and waited patiently while I hemmed and hawed before deciding. So thrilled; he definitely has found a life-long customer in me. As others have mentioned, the shop is cash only but is close to many banks in Columbia Heights. Ignore the purple in the photo, that's just the stencil.

Marc Jause: Critical: ProfessionalismOne of the Artist Isaac Colon is very non professional and has scammed me out of my money. He did not fulfill his obligations and was very deceptive. Stay clear of this guy, as he's not a guy you can trust unfortunately.

Abbie Ginis: I did tons of research on tattoos and studios before I finally settled on Hyena Tattoos, with Chris as my artist. This was my first tattoo, so I really appreciated how they offer a free consultation ahead of the appointment. It gave me a chance to meet the artist and discuss my ideas. And, looking back, even though I don't think I described what I wanted very well, Chris somehow created something totally unique for me. When I came in day of, we worked together to tweak the design until it was exactly what I wanted. The studio is clean, and Chris made sure to walk me through each step of the process while he was preparing me for the tattoo. I could go on and on, but I'm really happy with how this experience went and I'd definitely come back again!!

Jonnekia Ellison: I am blown away at just HOW OUTSTANDING the services were that I received from Michael and Mikey. I am from Florida and were visiting for the New Year. I was able to easily book an appointment for tattoos and a nostril piercing (my first) and chat with them on the customer portal beforehand. The pricing was very fair but honestly for the quality, I feel like they aren’t charging enough. Michael is hands down the BEST piercer. He was very knowledgeable, gave me supplies to clean my piercing until I made it home, and made the whole process quick and easy. I am scared of needles, funny to say, but I could barely tell he had started. He made me feel at ease and gave every customer (I watched at least 5 come in while I was being tattooed) that walked in after me the same level of stellar customer service. He listened to everyone’s wishes, gave his expert opinion on what the safest options were and pierced them at the perfect angle. Quick, easy and almost painless. Their implant grade jewelry is the best for piercings and I liked that it wasn’t about selling you some flashy expensive jewelry piece, but more of what is better for the healing process with their stock. Mikey did my tattoos and he is truly an incredible artist. My first tattoo was done carelessly and he was able to redo it while making it look fantastic. He did other cutesy tattoos for me (heart, flower, script rib tattoo, crescent moon) and he did them with such ease and precision and with the right tools to get the job done as painless as possible. He mentioned that he has been doing tattoos for 22 years and you can REALLY tell. My favorite part was how down to earth he is. If you want input on a tattoo design or what will work best, he’s there for it. He won’t shoo you out the door like most artists who just want to give you a quick tattoo. He made me feel calm and comfortable, like I could really be myself, and as a person who struggles with anxiety, I really appreciated that. It is now day 3 and I have no pain from my nostril piercing or four tattoos. I am also the biggest baby when it comes to pain lol. I HIGHLY recommend visiting their shop and are certainly considering driving 13 hours back there for any other piercings or tattoos that I want in the future. Service: Nose piercing

A. Burton Tripathi: Worked with Brian. Extremely professional, including first class hygiene and sterile practices. He is a brilliant artist. Brought my idea to life with more energy and impact than I could have imagined. Extremely clean lines. Very slick shading, color gradients, and highlighting. Absolutely tremendous! Getting signed up with an artist at Fatty's is a little weird. The shop is locked at all times. They don't take walk-ins and they don't answer the phone. You have to fill out the request sheet on their website. Then wait for them to contact you back on that page. Set up a time and go in for a consult. Artists might be late or no-show (rarely), so you need to have patience and be persistent. At the consult, you meet in person and discuss the project. They give you a price and an appointment. Come back at that second time to have the work performed and prepare to be amazed! Highly recommended.

Tyler Mates: I have got two great cover up’s from James (who’s no longer there) and the front desk gentleman is so nice! I’ve seen great work from the other artists. Make sure to book your appointment online first and get your quote, there is no phone service anymore

Demeris Morse: Tried to call all three locations and nobody picked up. The online appointment system also took multiple hours to get a response. I was just looking for a simple jewelry change and purchase, which shouldn’t require a laborious online system and lack of communication.

Catherine Cassell: I was recommended Fatty’s by a piercer of mine in another city and I happened to be in the area and walked in without an appointment. Dani had some time and took me immediately! I already had a piece of jewelry with me that I needed to get pierced and she immediately had it sanitized and pierced! She was incredibly kind and my piercing looks amazing. Will likely be coming back for a new piercing once this one heals :)

Tiff: Ladies, do yourself a huge favor and avoid this shop. I booked an appointment at this location because my usual piercing shop isn’t doing under-the-mask piercings, so Michael reached out to me and accepted my request immediately. But when I tell you how uncomfortable this man made me feel… please. Go elsewhere. He did an amazing job on my piercings BUT he will harass you and give you his number to try to get you to go on a date with him. Don’t do it. Go to Brilliance Piercing in Vienna, VA instead.

They are always honest about tattoo art, and will tell you if it is in an area that will make it fade or something they are not comfortable doing. Mallory Jones: I was strolling down M st and popped in with the goal to buy new a nose ring. I had gotten my nose pierced 6 months ago, but it wasn’t healing as I expected. As i was looking in the jewelry counter, Karl offered to help me. I shared with her my desires to switch out my ring and that when she told me that I had what they call a “piercing pimple”. She gave me advice on how to fix it and told me to come back and see her in a month if it wasn’t better. I saw improvements in just ONE WEEK and couldn’t be happier. Alex Riesner: Tattoo paradise was pretty exciting. My girlfriend and I went there to get our nipples pierced. We were referred to this place from another Tattoo shop and I was throughly happy with my experience here. The shop itself is pretty small and when I called I was told that piercing is not a booked appointment but a walk-in, first come first served situation. Absolutely fine, we come in on Monday and the shop looks phenomenal! Art on the walls and jewelry in cases, very clean and fun to look at. I fill out the paperwork and we are seen in no time at all. The woman the pierced us was extremely polite and respectful. She was professional throughout the whole experience, going over how to clean and maintain everything, what to do and what not to do and how long it would take to heal. Once we were done, it was a smooth recovery process from there. I would 100% recommend coming here again.

Adriana B.: Was not even able to have a chance to use this business. They lost at least $400 tonight. Extremely disappointed. My friends and I came to DC for a couple days and wanted to get a tattoo. We stopped by around 2:30pm and the front desk guy, Drew told us to come back at 8pm but that he'd call me back if anything changed. I didn't receive any call or text all day, so we stayed somewhat local, showed up at 8 just for him to tell us sorry, they couldn't accommodate us. I asked why he didn't call or text like he said he would. He just shrugged it off and said sorry. Very disappointed because if we knew we wouldn't be able to get our work done there, we could have made it somewhere else at an earlier time. It's our last day in town and he knew this. Follow-up should've happened, it was a very easy task. Now we're calling all the local shops and they're closed.

Brandon Sousa: I went here for an ear piercing and had a great experience. Patti is an excellent piercer, very professional, fast, seemed like going to a capable physician rather than a body piercing. Cost seemed fairly high but I’m sure I’m just unfamiliar with piercing costs — it was $110 and a $20 tip for standard ear lobe piercings. The shop itself is clean but not very well-appointed. Just a large open space with a tiny bench for waiting by the window.

Kera: Straight weirdo behavior & a very incompetent front desk person. Doesn’t know prices/jewelry sizing. Kept questioning my knowledge of my OWN body anatomy. I know exactly what I came in there for & what size I ALREADY have in/want. Wasted an hour of my day/time waiting for the piercer that never came out to service us. Mind you, we’ve been calling for weeks and even came in person to receive piercings and she’d NEVER be there. Bad experience all around. Unprofessional and awkward customer service. From ALL STAFF.

But I also wanted to take a moment to say how well I think they’re handling being reopen in the pandemic. Appointments only keep it to only a few people inside at once, everything clean and sanitized. While waiting I overheard the piercer explaining to another client how to care new nose or earring while wearing masks every day which I loved!

Veeda B: This tattoo parlor, although very clean and seemingly professional, overcharges their clients by absolutely ludicrous amounts. And what's worse: twice now, I have been quoted an already too expensive price for very small tattoos, and then after the tattoo is completed, the artist hiked up the price by LITERALLY $80- this has happened, no joke, twice. And these tattoos each took maybe 10 minutes to complete, which was what the artist had estimated beforehand. So there would be no valid reason to increase the cost. I want people to please be careful and don't allow yourself to be taken advantage of. This happens most often with women and people with foreign accents (I have several personal experiences here along with anecdotes from friends who have been tatted here as well). Also, I've gotta say, all the tattoos I've had here have blow outs.
