Nadia Messeh: Matt and his team renovated our DC rowhouse. Not only was the product absolutely stunning, the process was so easy! They turned a dirty concrete jagged slab into a mini wonderland for our kids. We have dealt with many contractors before and this was by far the simplest process, from the planning to the execution, everything was on time (Shocking in the contractor world!) and the product was amazing. Renovating a rowhouse in DC is not uncomplicated, they had to customize the beautiful fence around trees existing on our property lines. The result is our own mini oasis in the city! We are so happy not only with the result but the fact that the process was streamlined and simple for us.

Michele Backer: Update May 2022 - Johnson Landscape updated some of the plantings due to an unfortunate issue that destroyed some mature bushes. They also maintain our lawn with weekly mowing, weed pulling and spring and fall clean up. In addition, they were kind enough to provide a referral for mosquito spraying company. A special thank you to Jamie Newell, who designed and oversaw the 2017 revamp and continues to help with more recent issues related to new/replacement plantings. In winter 2017 Johnson landscape overhauled our front and backyard. Adding retaining wall new plantings as well as sprinklers, French drains and lighting. It’s so much more useable and beautiful. They maintain our lawn now and we are pleased with their staff. They are thorough and professional.

Heather Jiles: We hired Groff in November 2020 to transform our very difficult backyard (flooding, slope issues, dark, etc) into an area that we wanted to spend time in and that was low maintenance. We spent months working with Groff tweaking the design and selecting materials. They were very responsive to questions we had and any problems that arose during construction. We are so happy with the result. They really made every inch useable and I no longer dread my own backyard.

James Arnold: The experience of working with Sean, Robert and his team was outstanding from the first step to finish. Sean came for the site visit, listened carefully to what we had to say and came up with a design that we barely changed. The project included getting rid of our front lawn and replacing with a perennial heavy landscape including flagstone retaining walls, lighting and irrigation. We are happy with the result - the feeling of satisfaction we now get when pulling into our driveway is fantastic - no more ratty lawn, hello pleasing, environmentally friendly landscape! Groff Landscape Design took our aesthetic goals + our functional requirements and created an outdoor space that nods to the 1950s ranch home and answered all of our space usage needs (widening walkways/driveways, adding lighting, creating seating, integrating appropriate/attractive year-round plantings within hardscape). We had a very specific design vision, a challenging hillside location, and a list of must-have goals for the finished space. Groff expertly met all those goals. The entire team (from designer Sean, to the onsite demo/build team, to Robert Groff) demonstrated a high-level of knowledge and skill. The Groff team understands both the limits and the possibilities of all the design elements, including: the manufactured build materials (blocks, risers, caps), the outdoor lighting options, and the plant material. We have past experience working with other contractors in building ambitious/major outdoor projects (building a saltwater spa, outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen) - and Groff Landscape Design demonstrated professional knowledge + thoughtful skill.
Rachel Saltzman Tennis: We have done many home improvements projects and Groff is the absolute gold standard. They do beautiful, quality work and they mean it when they say they are serious about customer service. Robert’s turn-around time for answering questions by email was usually within the hour. He and Sean were both patient with us as we explored different design options and and changed our minds a few times. They offered helpful suggestions but were never pushy, and they were always responsive to what we decided. We also have to recognize Jose, who personally drove stone samples from Ashburn to Arlington on a weekend so that we wouldn’t have to wait several extra days for delivery. It was such a pleasure working with this company. I cannot recommend them highly enough!
DAVID BUSS: Robert Groff, his designer and installation team completed a project at my home with the utmost professionalism, attention to detail, with total communication during the project, on budget and within the timeframe even with the rain delays!!. Most importantly, the resulting landscape is a beauty!! I recommend this company without any reservation. The designer, Sean and his team, listened carefully during the design phase, provided input of additional fantastic ideas to make the project better than we imagined at the outset. John Loria: Fairfax County required me to do some maintenance on my home Stormwater Management Facility. I contacted several of the companies that had gone through the county training and was surprised that only three were willing to visit my property. I noticed a difference immediately, starting with the Wheat’s representative who came out to assess the job (Kane Ramsey). Wheat’s was very professional and comprehensive in their approach. They were willing to handle all aspects of the work while the other two companies wanted to do only portions of the work. I was pleased with Wheat’s attention to details in their visit and in talking with me about the job. They took pictures of the work areas and drew on them to show the specific areas that were going to be fixed. Wheat’s really made it easy to deal with one company and get the entire job done! Additionally, Wheat’s was accustomed to dealing with the county and documented the entire project in writing and with pictures. They submitted and secured all the required county approvals for me once the job was done. Wheat’s finished the job very quickly once they got started. The crew was excellent and cleaned up the work areas completely. I am a completely satisfied customer and highly recommend Wheat’s. Amanda Bunch: Our experience with Wheat’s Landscaping has been an outstanding one, from the initial design consultation to the execution of each step. Our design consultant had wonderful ideas, understood our vision and worked closely with us to make it a reality. Our project manager and install crew were just amazing every step of the way! Robert, our project manager was informative and quickly responded to my inquiries. The install crew worked at our home for many weeks, improving yard irrigation and installing a flagstone walkway, irrigation system and many plantings. Their attention to detail was unmatched. I was most impressed by their efforts to go over and beyond in improving the function of our space and making it look great in the process. After our wonderful experience with the design and installation process we signed an annual contract for lawn maintenance and have been very satisfied with the services. Harley Hopkins: Hired Wheat to reconstruct a multilevel shrub and flower garden in front of my house. The design included routing downspouts through the bed to appropriate discharge points. The crew arrived on time and completed the work as planned in one day. All debris was removed from the site and mulch was added as a finishing touch.
Leslie Regan: Wheat’s did a complete re-do of our back yard and side yards. Loved working with their designer who understood exactly what we wanted. He also understood that everything had to be deer-proof! The guys that installed all the bushes and sod and repaired a rotten wooden wall were amazing! Fast, meticulous and so neat! Every single thing that Wheat’s planted lived through the hot summer, and every single bush was not touched by deer all summer and winter! This company is very organized, great management at each level, and just really wonderful to work with! In fact, I just contacted them last week to do a bit more work for us-can’t travel, may as well make your living space exactly how you imagine it could be!!! Michael Paulsen: John was wonderful to work with in creating this beautiful landscape for us. His vision of what will look best in the areas that needed attention was spot on. In meeting with us, John was always on time. In developing the plan, he encouraged us to communicate our thoughts and, as the project unfolded, modified the initial concept as needed so that we all were pleased with the outcome. The work started and ended as planned, and the areas were always left in a clean and neat condition. He is certainly one of the best contractors with whom we have ever dealt.
Wannett Miller: John is an artist. He is also a consummate professional. 20+ years ago he designed our back garden and the specimen trees he gave us then are magnificent today. Over the years and through our home’s renovations, his designs for each of the difficultly situated areas of our corner lot have come together beautifully. His vast knowledge of the specimen trees he cultivates in his nursery together with the architectural elements and the complementary plantings he incorporates in his designs have given us multiple beautiful gardens.

ThePinkfreak805: A really beautiful and enjoyable place! They’ve got some really awesome plant species here! The tropical room is especially great! Not only is it beautiful, but with the humidity you’ll really feel like you’re in the rainforest! Also very cool to see the endangered plants you aren’t likely to see anywhere else.
Alex Navarro: Always lovely. The inside and outside gardens are full of flowers. Great place to take kids. They even have a children’s garden where kids can plant something and water it. So cute! You can spend a lot of time here if you like, but you can also easily see everything in about an hour.
Richa Rashmi: This is such a delightful retreat for an afternoon lunch or just a date in the different ecotones of the world. You could walk into a completely tropical climate full of tropical trees that have terrace views, or walk into a desert of cactus. There’s a section on medicinal plants followed by rare and endangered species which is mind blowing. I absolutely loved my shortest trip to Hawaii and then to a garden of orchids and roses. Be sure to checkout the inner and outer gardens. There are interesting wall murals of tea from China and other such use. But the most amazing part was the TOILET. Yes, you heard it right. It’s full of ornamental plants that smells amazing and the sound of water and birds will make you feel you’re in the cleanest part of the world, unlike what public restrooms are known for.
Jeremy Andra: The botanical gardens are a beautiful hideaway from the normal everyday views of the world. An amazing display of some of the wonderful offerings this world has to offer in the way of beautiful plants and miscellaneous greenery. We were shocked to find there is no charge to see any of this and would highly suggest you stop in and check it out.
Hyo Jin Moon: Beautiful garden that is open to the public for free. There are spots where you can sit and enjoy the weather and also the indoor green house that has so much to see (and learn. Lots of educational components). I highly recommend visiting here with kids of all ages.
Ben Matthews: If you’ve spent the day walking up the mall and around the museums, then this is a fantastic place to unwind. The glasshouse is beautiful in its own right, and features plants from many different climates. And the outdoor gardens are equally lovely. Definitely worth a stop if you’re near the Capital Building.

I loved working with my project manager Craig Corbett and got to know so many of the friendly, professional men on the crew. I have since worked with GAL on a redo on the front of my house, switching to artificial turf and installing a trampoline in the play area, and helping me design and install a small Japanese garden in a vacant space. I have referred them to four friends for large landscaping jobs and all of them have been thrilled as well. Erin L: Enjoyable socially distant shoppers for native plants. Owners were friendly and knowledgeable,and their pets made sure to greet us personally whole the humans socially distances. (The owners were considerate about the pets and offered to put them inside of any of the customers were uncomfortable. I found a the plants I was looking for and then some.
